The best place to be based when going around the Quebrada if you go in January. Lovely restaurants and shops, quiet, not so busy. Comparing with Purmamarca and Humahuaca is the place to be based. We didn't have a car and instead, we booked excursions every day. I'd recommend doing that. Going with a car might be useless for some excursions where you need a 4WD or a local who knows the tricky gravel roads very well.

Best place to base yourself north of Salta.
Best place to base yourself north of Salta. You need a car really to see the tourist sites, would recommend hiring for a midday late afternoon pick-up so you can return later in the day.
Would recommend 1 day driving there, then 2 days based in Tilcara to visit the mountains and salt flats. Then return to Salta on the final day visiting the small towns on the way back.
There are two driving routes there. Take the less windy one there when you first collect your car, as the windy route is more complicated to drive (though nothing to fear).
Tilcara has the best restaurants in the area, in particular go to the cake shop La Casa De Champa for the strudel

The house was very close to the centre, yet thanks to it's location inside the block, it felt very private.
I must say, the photos do not do justice to this accommodation - in real life it is much more nice than on the photos.
We will recommend it warmly to anyone needing some privacy and something extra.

A beautiful town with amazing vibes!
A beautiful town with amazing vibes! We really enjoyed visiting the archeological museum and Pucara de Tilcara. An amazing hike up into Gargante del Diablo. Great markets and night life. Very friendly and safe town.
This place is incredible! The apartment is centrally located with an unbelievable mountain view. The interior details are extremely memorable — with a local artist’s original artwork. The hosts were extremely warm and welcoming, and speaking to them was a highlight of our time in Tilcara. We stayed at the second story apartment and strongly recommend this if it’s available, but we also had a chance to see the other unit and it’s also very charming.
Absolutely incredible property & a very caring host; it’s VERY clean, has everything you need (cooking utensils, bathroom supplies, the loveliest backyard with a mountain view), awesome interior design - it’s the absolute best experience and will make your stay in Tilcara super memorable. Special thank you to Melisa, the caretaker, for giving us the place in such pristine condition. We would definitely come back!
I loved everything about this stay. The room was very well thought out, from a screen on the bathroom window, roll shutters over bedroom windows, soap / shampoo, great wifi, comfy beds. The best part of the stay was the hostess, she provided lots of great suggestions from activities, to restaurants to bus routes, what a fantastic stay in Tilcara.
We had a pleasant stay at El Obrador. It is an original site with cabins and garden a short walking distance from the center of Tilcara. Cabin room was new and well organised, bed was comfortable, everything was clean. Bathroom were on the other side of the garden in another cabin together with toilets.
Great location, lovely staff (Fede at the reception was really nice), the hotel building had a nice relaxing grassy area in the middle. The apartment itself had all you need, was well equipped. A good continental breakfast (selection of pastries, juice, milk, tea, coffee…)
This quiet hotel is on multiple levels. The views from rooms on the upper levels is lovely. The breakfast room is also on the top level. Rooms are a very good size. There is a small pool. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the centre of Tilcara.
It is a new house with two en-suite bedrooms, very bright and with a huge backyard overlooking the mountains. Ricardo, received us with great kindness and advised us about the activities, stores and restaurants in Tilcara. A highly recommended place.
This was a charming hotel with nice public spaces ( for hotel guests) including a pool, and an inside area to relax when the restaurant wasn’t open. We enjoyed a nice dinner at the restaurant one night.
The hotel has an authentic style and is an excellent base for exploring Tilcara and its surroundings. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are perfectly clean and the breakfast buffet is great.
The place is really cozy and welcoming. Staff is extremely helpful all the time and the food is delicious. Also, it is close to Tilcara’s main attractions: Devil’s waterfall and Fortress of Tilcara
Beautiful hotel and room. Very comfortable bed. Swimming pool. Expensive, but everywhere in Tilcara is and at least you feel you're getting some luxury for your money here.
The room was nicely appointed for a hotel in this location . It had a balcony but the most uncomfortable chairs. We were unable to sit out there for more than a few minutes.
it is a lovely house with big spaces
although it is located in the center of Tilcara (which it is awesome already) it has a huge private garden that makes it very special
