Olinda is odd in that it is lightly populated.
For instance, there are a phenomenal number of churches in a very small area but (I imagine) way less people than there were historically,
The beach is close by and nice.
It is a stark contrast to Recife so close by.
The minor basilica is worth a visit with it’s gold or nation.

I didn't realize that my dates coincided with what is called the "previa", or preview to Carnaval. So this was an unexpected treat in a way! I don't have the tolerance or stamina for actual Carnaval, but being able to partake in and witness the preliminary street festivals was quite fun. Olinda is lovely and so walkable. I do wish that the signage for the historical markers was restored and improved. For example, the Ribeira Market is a local spot for purchasing souvenirs. It also is significant for being the market where enslaved Black people were sold alongside other "commodities". Given that Brazil has the largest percentage of people of African descent in the Americas whose ancestors were enslaved by the Portuguese, this history should NOT be overlooked, "whitewashed" or hidden. One can enjoy the beauty of a place AND acknowledge the painful legacy of enslavement throughout the Americas. Lastly, don't swim in the beaches here. Raw sewage ends up here and you can see this in the brown water. If you want a beach to swim in, head south to Porto de Galinhas.

Charming historic town.
Charming historic town. By total coincidence I was there on a Sunday night in the lead-up to Carnaval, and a local Carnaval team was practicing. Fun to watch. This evidently happens on Sunday nights for at least several weeks (longer?) leading up to Carnaval.

An incredible little haven of peace and beauty next to a buzzling city of Recife. The beaches right in front of the town are not extraordinary but within 10-15 min drive there are large beaches with little bars etc. Like anywhere in Brazil, litter and especially plastic is a problem.

I was disappointed with Olinda for being a well known tourist city in Brazil. Dirty where the beach is distant and without conditions for swimming and with little tourist attraction. Generally speaking I would not go to Recife / Olinda on vacation. The city is also very dangerous, according to residents.

We were there only one night but we enjoyed the Historic Centre and walking up to the lighthouse. The best part was taking a funicular to the treehouse restaurant! A three minute walk from the Convent.
This hostel is incredibly nice. I almost didn't leave to go explore the city. The common areas have a gorgeous view and the place is very clean. I slept so well because they have air conditioning in the bedrooms and the bed itself I found very comfortable. The staff was so patient and kind to me with my inability to speak Portuguese and the location is so close to the water and restaurants/bars and stores, I really have no complaints about it.
Me and my wife LOVED our stay! Graça and Rita were warm and helpful, the place is exactly as the photos, the breakfast delicious and the house really well located. Extra points for the high speed internet connection that allowed me to do a couple of video calls without any interruptions. I highly recommend this place for both business (aka digital nomads looking for a nice scape) or leisure.
Unique accommodation of an old convent with a perfect location in the historic area of Olinda. You can explore the convent including the Chapel, a small room with history of the place and huge terraces overlooking parts of the city. Staff were friendly and professional. The room was plain but was exceptionally clean and functional. Nice shower.
A cozy and small historic 17th century place in the middle of the fabulous colonial centre of Olinda, spectacularly overlooking Recife and the ocean. Decorated with ceramic artwork created by Ramondo, the owner, who is an outstanding artist. Meeting him is a privelege already well worth the travel!
Spacious apartment with relaxing terrace and beautiful views over Olinda and the coast to Recife. Great location right next to Alto da Sé square/lookout and Cathedral. Raimundo is a wonderful host with a biography worthy of a Netflix series!
We Loved everything about the place! 👍💖 Its not a "Luxus" hotell, but its all over a beautiful place to stay! 💖💖 And the best of all was the suroundings and the pool-area. ⛱️⛱️ Very green and "fresh"!. We'll be back! 👍
1. Upgrade to a Deluxe room. You'll thank me later.
2. Check out the local restaurants (a little north of this area...walking time around 10 minutes. Lots of great options!
