    We stayed 1 night.

    We stayed 1 night. Purpose was to see the National Park, Lencois Maranhenses. We were advised to go to Atins or Santo Amaro instead of staying all the time in Barreirinhas as they are nicer and I would second that. It is a good base for tours and transfers to see the park.

    The tours are all the same.

    The tours are all the same. They drive like maniacs on bumpy roads. It is not fun for everyone and especially unnerving and tiring you have already spent half of day trekking, or then to have a very uncomfortable ride is tiresome and infantile. It should not be imposed on all visitors. That’s what are quads for and other extreme forms of transportation on sand. Also no one spoke a word of English. More guides should be trained and companies should offer visitors a choice of joining a group where the guide speaks some English. All of this on the top of a very tiresome bumpy ride from the airport. I feel like my body was shaken to the bones in the last 24 hours. And for what? To experience the serene nature of dunes and lakes the rough driving should not be mandatory but optional.

    All of the development and movement in the city is...

    All of the development and movement in the city is concentrated in the city center which has a few nice shops and good restaurants. Other than that, the rest of the city lacks infrastructure - unfortunately, a lot of roads are unpaved and without public lighting.

    Small town with little shops, pharmacies and restaurants. Communication is close to impossible there as the residents do not speak a word of English. It gets pretty tiring. Thank god for google translate. The roads are in bad shape if you rented a vehicle, look out for extremely high speed bumps and pot holes. Mosquitos everywhere! Basically, not much to do. A point of interest only because of the Lençóis dunes.

    Make sure to book hotels in advance!

    Make sure to book hotels in advance! Tours can also be done in advance. A very small town, so bring lots of cash with you. The town is very cute and felt safe. As long as you book a hotel in a generally central location, than everything is walkable distance. Dinner might be a challenge when it's very late but you can always order delivery! Amazing little gem in the state of Maranhão .

    People of barreirinhas are really nice and polite!

    People of barreirinhas are really nice and polite! The city is safe and very calm! During the night, in June, it has some people playing songs at the pier in downtown! “A canoa” has really good meals and beers! And as soon as you decide your hotel, call to them so they can make all the reservations for you to have all the activities.

    The staff were so lovely and helpful. The reason we booked here was because I read that they were helpful in the reviews and it was true. They helped us book a very last minute amazing tour, and also a transfer to Jeri. We were able to enjoy our limited time in Barreirinhas because of their kindness - if we had not stayed there our experience would not have been as good. The coffee was some of the best we’ve had in Brazil.

    Cineide and Gaspar are just amazing hosts that make everything possible to makenyou feel welcome and safe. Cineide can organize all the tours you wish for around the Lençois Maranhenses to very good prices. The hostel is clean, breakfast is good and the people are very nice. I just loved staying there and will surely stay there again, if I ever cone back to Barreirinhas.

    Cozy hotel. Best part was the owner Jacqueline. She was the most attentive host ever. Helped me with all my tours for a really good price. Super nice and helpful. Hammocks and free water in front of your room. Free breakfast. Across the street from the River. Highly recommended.

    We loved that Chale Marinas was far away from the noisy clubs in the center of town. Breakfast had variety and was good. We like that the hotel is by the river and provides kayaks for its guest. So we enjoyed kayaking and swimming in the river.
