Historic city with lots of interesting places to visit, very pleasant parks, good gastronomy, kind people, many cultural events. Special attention to the Vesperata calendar (open-air evening music performance with drinks/snacks - must make reservation) . Better not to go with your car to downtown (difficult to park and terrible for the suspension/wheels). Better ask for a van or a ride and walk there (be prepared for steepy slopes).

It is now one of the best places to know more about Brazilian towns of the 18th and 19th century in Minas Gerais. It looks fresh and clean, full of places to visit in and around the town. It is better to be on foot while in the historical centre not to disturb the local scenery. Good food and nice cafes. On Saturdays and Sundays, the market is a must. People are always very helpful. The landscape which includes a variety of waterfalls easy to reach and swim is quite unusual to this state and must be seen from the roads.

I felt safe walking about. Friendly, helpful people.
I felt safe walking about. Friendly, helpful people. Beautiful, historic buildings. Well worth the long bus trip from Belo Horizonte. It was the highlight of my whole Estrada Real adventure. So glad I didn’t miss it.
