A Symbol of Canadian Pride
On the south bank of the Ottawa River, the Canadian capital Ottawa is a grand symbol of what the country stands for: bilingualism, civic pride and wonderful vistas.
Facing Langevin Block (the prime minister’s office) is the city’s most famous landmark - the Centre Block parliament building. Its tall central tower and circular parliamentary library make a great photograph from Gatineau across the river, which is joined to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rideau Canal by a series of locks. Skating on the frozen canal is a highlight of the huge Ottawa Winterlude festival.
The city’s history is detailed in Bytown Museum by the locks. Opposite is peaceful Major’s Hill Park, overlooked by Château Laurier, a historic hotel named after a former prime minister. Also named after him is Laurier House, his seat of office. Other important national buildings include the Royal Canadian Mint, Supreme Court, and Rideau Hall, the Queen’s official residence when in the country.
The business district and Ottawa Convention Centre are in Downtown, and nearby shopping options include Rideau Mall and ByWard Market - the oldest farmers’ market in Canada and the area with the best nightlife.

A city full of fascinating museums and government-related buildings, many of which you can tour. Ottawa originally wasn't really on my destination list (a friend told me that stopping over for 1 day would be enough), but surprisingly I spent 3 days in the city and feel like I still had plenty left to see. You can tour buildings on Parliament Hill for free with advance reservation (eg: House of Commons, House of Lords, Supreme Court). There are also a lot of excellent museums like the Ingenium (science), Canadian Museum of History just across the river in Gatineau, National Gallery of Canada (art), and Royal Canadian Mint, just to name a few. A great place to learn more about Canada, what it means to be Canadian, and gain a lot of cultural and sociological insights.

We loved where we stayed (Delta Ottawa Downtown). This hotel was close to: - Parliament Hill - Senate Building - Rideau Centre The hotel is a couple of blocks from Sparks Street! Great location. I would avoid coming on weekends- can get really busy at Tourist Attractions.

Went to the Air and Space Museum - exceptional! Loved that the aircraft on display were all authentic, no cheap reproductions. Staff at the museum were very friendly. Spent a lot of time in the parks doing birding - very spacious, lots of forest land, good trails. It's a little small if you stay with a family of four but it's OK for 2 nights. The location is outside of central Ottawa which could have been easily reached by bus but there was a huge construction going on so it took at least twice as long to go downtown as usual. It should be finished by now so that this problem shouldn't exist any longer. Bathroom and kitchen were cleaned well.

He gave us excellent recommendations for restaurants and what to do in Ottawa. His breakfasts are amazing - different every day and not the run-of-the-mill eggs and bacon. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was on the small side but contained everything we needed.
