La Serena is a good central point to lodge, but it's its surroundings that make it a special place. There's nothing really special about La Serena as a city itself, but its sister city Coquimbo, offers a more diverse variety in terms of landmarks and gastronomy. Valle del Elqui is an hour drive away from La Serena, offering fantastic experiences for star gazers and peaceful settings.

It is an old, smallish city (second only to Santiago in size and age). There is access to the beach (and port) as well as access to the semi desert, where the observatories are located, around it. Very walkable downtown, lots of old churches, several museums, lots of places to eat in all price ranges, friendly locals, good public transportation, a nice city.

Every time I visit Serena, I love walking around the old part of town. I especially enjoy the colonial-style stone buildings, which most of them are quite well preserved. I enjoy aimlessly walking around town just taking in the different views of parks, winding streets, old buildings, and so on. Serena has a very nice cool special vibe. Also just being able to walk 30 minutes and reaching most places that are worth visiting means a lot to me. Getting around Serena is quite easy whether it be by bus, taxi, uber, biking, or - as I already said - just walking. There are many quaint places where to eat around the Recova area and all over downtown. However, I must say that taking a short trip to Coquimbo's "caleta" (fishing cove) is an absolute must if one is into sea food and fish in general. There are many different restaurants offering a wide variety of fresh seafoods and fish that one just can't miss. It's a delight!

La Serena is a nice historical city with beautiful beach and plenty of things to visit around. We visited the Elqui Valley, an astronomical observatory and the 3rd Millennium Cross in Coquimbo. The Japanese Garden is highly recommended.

A day to go around the city, the museums (not on Mondays and Sundays) and try the food and relax at the beach in the evenings.
A full day to a trip to an island to see the scenery animals and penguins.
A day to go to Coquimbo up to the Cross and to see the city.
If you want to enjoy the beach and walk or ride a bike at that long beautiful blue beach you can stay more.
I think 3-4 days (if you want to be at the beach more) is ideal.
The local beer is nice!
You can not find a good coffee in La Serena!
Location is right on the beach and within walking distance of a lot of good restaurants. You can't swim on this portion of the beach so you need to get a taxi or walk to the swimming safe spaces. But there is a surf school really nearby. Also you could walk to the bus station if you had too. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, we left our bags in super early in the morning once we arrived at 6 am.
Pretty, quiet small hotel near central plaza NOT on the (overbuilt) beach strip. Safe, easy, free parking across the street. Quiet, spacious room with huge beds and good pillows. Decent breakfast served to your room or to the dining area, your choice. We stopped there for a night on our way to San Pedro and liked it so much that we stopped again on our way back south.
I tried booking like 3-4 places in La Serena that could accommodate my 3:30am arrival time and none were able to except Terra Diaguita. I really appreciated the flexibility. The actual property is so gorgeous and they have a fireplace in the breakfast room which was so great because I was traveling in the winter. Breakfast was really nice. Gorgeous room.
The apartment was very clean! The utilities where very excellent and the location was a 2 minute walk to a beautiful part of the beach.
At the end of our trip we forgot some stuff including a wallet with some cash. before we even realised it was gone, Natalia noticed it to us and she even send it to us!
I would highly recommended this apartment!
Victor was so kind, welcoming, chatty and very patient with our bad Spanish! He went out if his way to help us including taking us to the bus stop to ensure we found the right bus! The room is very comfy, and the whole place feels very homely. We would recommend Victor's place to anyone staying in La Serena!
A very spacious and well decorated room and a beautiful property overall. Super warm beds with electric heated underblankets and very warm blankets are super appreciated when the nights in La Serena get cold. The hotel has its spa: ask for Alejandro, their wonderful massage therapist. We loved our stay!
We had a lovely time in Apart Colors hotel. The apartment we were given had everything you need for a comfortable and restful stay. Besides, the location was ideal: very near the center. Breakfast was nice too. Pabla on reception was an absolute star, very helpful. Thank you so much for everything.
The apartment was very clean and comfortable. The staff appeared very competent, pleasant to deal with, and flexible when we kept changing our minds about the number of guests. The pool was very welcome, too. Location-wise, it couldn't be beat, as it was right in front of the beach.
Downtown/el Arbol hostel was a great place to spend the night in La Serena. The location was close to the center and in walking distance from the bus station.
They were flexible with my checkin and welcomed me very well.
It was clean and all the facilities worked very well.
Victor's hostal is just perfect. We only stayed for one night, but clean shared kitchen, great room and large clean private bathroom makes for a nice multi day visit in La Serena. Victor is one of the best hosts we have encountered. Be nice to him ;-)
All the staff were welcoming and helpful, and spoke good English - booking excursions was very straightforward. The communal spaces were spacious and inviting, and the breakfast was good. Convemient, quiet location close to the bus station and town.
