San Pedro is the hub for all tours and activities in the Atacama Desert. We stayed within walking distance of the downtown area. The town is very busy at night and weekends. Many excellent restaurants. Tour companies are all along the main street.
I would recommend renting a car and visiting most sites on your own. All main highways are paved and most sites are easy to locate but have dirt/gravel connecting roads from the main highway. Just slow down and take it easy and a sedan will be all you need. A 4X4 is only needed for really difficult off-road travel.
I would recommend staying for at least 4 days to have time to see the sites without being rushed.

San Pedro de Atacama is one of the best destinations in Chile. There are many may things to see and do, from geisers to salt flats. There is an activity for everyone. Weather also helps in keeping you wanting to do some outdoor activities. I love it!

An incredibly vibrant small town in the desert.
An incredibly vibrant small town in the desert. The tours available to surrounding areas make it a first choice destination. The diversity in the landscape from the salt lakes to the high mountain geysers is just amazing. The availability of different food choices is really good. Pizza, pasta, empanadas, stews etc. There is a fabulous bakery ,La Franchicheria, on Licanbur street that every minibus stops at to pick up the bread for the tours(breakfasts luncheons snacks included in the tour). Their white chocolate and raspberry croissant is just the best ever.
Unfortunately as it was a full moon and cloudy we didn't get to do any stargazing. For our tours we used Mitampi on Caracoles Street. Ask for Julian.

A small and beautiful city, in the middle of the desert, focused on turism. The places to visit are extremely beautiful and unique. Good restaurants and easy to get around. I've been there in December, dont know if it is the best time of the year because it is very hot. Maybe october or april would be better.

This was the second time for us at San Pedro, and the first time with our 8 years old kid. We loved how the town has changed from the first time we visited, while maintaining traditions that make it so unique. The landscape is so overwhelming that you can't help feeling touched by nature. For chileans it's the perfect way to connect to our past, while for the foreigners is a beautiful way to discover the richness of our cultural past.
There are good restaurants that will totally satisfy sophisticated palates and street food that will make you feel like a chilean citizen.
One important issue is that national parks allow general public during mornings while they reserve afternoons for tour agencies. If you want to use agencies, the best is to use the mornings to visit the town, museums, buy souvenirs and the likes. If you rent a car and want to drive to the natural attractions, you have to do it in the morning. So, depending on your preferences, you should plan in advance.

Air conditioning! This place is one of the few hotels that has air conditioning in some of their rooms. Definitely needed since this is a super hot and dry climate.
Xiaolin was one of the best hosts that we have ever had. She went above and beyond. I was feeling sick and she went grocery shopping for some hot soup and noodles. She even made me some fried eggs to go into the soup. She was very responsive to all of our questions and very friendly. I can't recommend this place enough and most of it is due to her.
This property was spectacular. The space was decorated impeccably, the breakfast was amazing and the staff were even better. This was the first stop on a longer trip and we wished we could have stayed for longer. It is “far” relative to other hotels, but that’s only if you are picking on the one small thing. Still very easy to walk to the main streets of San Pedro. I recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to the Atacama Desert.
Hostal Casa Turipite offers nice and quiet rooms which all are situated around a courtyard where you have your own table and chairs to sit outside. The hostal is situated in a quiet area at walking distance of the busy San Pedro de Atacama. The owners Pamela and Guillermo are very nice people who are willing to help you with everything. Maite, the girl who is working there, is very helpfull and prepares a good breakfast.
Terrantai is a wonderful and charming hotel. Careful attention to detail. Super clean. Really friendly staff Monica, Christian, and the owner Davi were amazing. I had a wonderful experience. The wine tasting every night was great way to unwind every night. The architecture is beautifully rustic. The bed was really fluffy and the rooms had perfect heating. They even offered complimentary cacao butter lip balm!
We loved this accommodation! Our hosts were absolutely amazing and the nicest people. The tent was so great, the sky was amazing to see as well, the breakfast was also awesome and we just had an overall great time there.
100% recommend staying here while you’re in San Pedro de Atacama!
We had a wonderful time staying at Hotel Tulor! Great location, 2 minute walk from the Main Street with tons of restaurants and shops. The hotel has many nice lounging areas, and all of the staff were incredibly friendly and always happy to help us. Would stay here again!
The property was very clean and comfortable with an excellent breakfast. Gustavo was a great host and the location was perfect for tourists looking to get the most out of a trip to San Pedro de Atacama. I would certainly stay here again and recommend to friends!
The hotel was clean. I had trips out nearly every day so I was out before breakfast and they provided me with a breakfast to take out. Sandwich cereal bar drink etc which was good. Friendly staff and good location in San Pedro. Good little town altogether
Nice and welcoming environment for everyone who would like to have a nice Atacama experience. Plus the place is very clean.
You can also talk to the reception to pick up some snacks for the tours if you’re not able to be at the hotel for breakfast.
The Lodge is a short walk from the Plaza and the main commercial street. The host Xiaolin is delightful and friendly, and offers very useful recommendations on activities. The breakfast room has more food options than many big city hotels.
Perfect location at the end of the main ‘street’…loved the feel of the property and set up. Sort of bungalo’s within a hotel. Bfst amazing and so nice of them to set out a bag bfst for the Geiser or Rocks tour you came for and depart 6am
I had an excellent stay. The hostel is clean, well managed and perfect for a trip to San Pedro de Atacama. The breakfast is excellent, and they even made me a to-go bag on the morning I was unable to make breakfast because of a tour.
The staff at hotel desertica goes above and beyond to make their guests feel special. We loved our time at the hotel- between the excellent service, amazing recommendations and delicious food. We will definitely be back!
The location, parking spot, outside of San Pedro de Atacama. One day we left very early so it was possible to get the breakfast for take out. Check out 30 mins later completely ok.
