Great little city (by China standards), with great selection of food all over the city, and quite cheap esp the seafood. Very friendly people all over. Good feeling of personal security even at night. Taxi drivers are all honest with their meters. The highly hyped Gulangyu island was interesting but has become too commercial with tourist shops and restaurants all over which spoils the otherwise serene island that has no motor vehicles operating, so mainly walking.
Tulou round houses about 2 hrs drive west of Xiamen are highly recommended for a full day tour. It was our highlight of the trip.
The Hulishan Cannon Fort park is worth a visit, very pleasant and interesting.

Coming from Shanghai, Xiamen is a city on a more human scale and is full of different places of interest. I find that there is a "little" resemblance with Hong Kong in the sense that it is not a flat city. There is a lot of relief, parks, lakes, and walks to do. There is the Skyway + Huandao Scenic Road along the sea for those who like cycling. For those who like to walk, there is the waterfront (lake, park, etc.) and the impressive 23km long Mountains to Sea trail".

Xiamen is a city with a super-chilled and relaxed vibe, food is everywhere and everyone is always eating! The people are really chilled and the city has many different spots and areas, up/down hills, beaches, islands, and the main island is not so intimidatingly huge. One morning the city was hit by a strong typhoon and by noon the streets were already clean from all the collapsed trees. The next day there was a beautiful shiny sun and it was great to walk around the city. I really liked it.

Xiamen is a great seaside city for relaxing!
Xiamen is a great seaside city for relaxing! The pace of life is slower than many other Chinese cities and shop owners, as well as the public seem to like to readily stop for tea and chatting. The garden and parks are nice for strolling and the seaside "boardwalk" is great for biking. Moderate temps also make this a nice choice for most seasons. There is also plenty of shopping on Zhong Shan Street and the surrounding malls, as well as a few museums, and a variety of restaurants with various cuisines. Gulang Yu Island is a nice blend of history and modern leisure convenience; just try to go during the week and not on golden weeks to avoid the crowds. The only major disappointment was the Shapowei "Art District" which turned out to be just a bar/café district with very little art. I also was unable to see Xiamen University campus as you needed a reservation three days in advance, and even when I tried to register online in advance a couple minutes after the registration opened, it was already full! Overall, I will return to Xiamen again.

My first review on Booking.com:
My first review on Booking.com:
Xiamen was chosen mainly for the weather - 21-25°C in early December during our 3-night stay.
We covered as many sights as we could, including a day-excursion into rural Nanjing County to visit the UNESCO-listed Fujien Tulou. Xiamen strikes us as a very international city, modern, but not super-urban, and of just the right size. Our ferry-ride to Gulang Island (Gulangyu, also a UNESCO-WCH site) confirms our impression - the mere sight of foreign tourists and ferry-riders was shocking.
Transportation in the city is more than convenient. Although we used taxi most of the time, we also rode buses, subways, and high-speed trains.
The below photos provides only a selected view of Xiamen and its surrounding areas, which we intend to return and spend more time to explore.
Fantastic luxury hotel in Xiamen, great for a couple of days R&R. Garden room was comfy and clean with a complimentary mini-bar, great bath and big balcony. Staff were friendly and attentive. The gym and spa baths were top notch. The location is on the opposite side of the island to most attractions, taxi is easy enough, but not a lot of food options within walking distance. A great way to wind down after a few days touring Tulous in the countryside.
We stayed here on a 2 night stopover in Xiamen. Location was good, right next to the shopping street with lots of places nearby to eat. One particular staff member spoke really good English and the other had just enough to serve our needs. The mattress was firm and comfortable, the room was clean, the view was nice. The restaurant on site also had delicious food (if you don't have cash you might have to eat at the hotel).
We usually stay in C & D Hotel whenever we come to Xiamen, since 2000. We like the hotel and we have got adjusted to the hotel and staff. But this time we had little difficulty since many english speaking staff were not their. All were using translator to understand what we say. Apart from this no issues. We were happy to stay in C & D Hotel
The rooms were great, we got 2 family rooms. The beds were very comfortable and had 2 bathrooms which was perfect. There was a buffet breakfast downstairs which made things much more convenient. They also did our washing when it was left in the basket, free of charge!
The hotel is also extremely close to the airport.
I stayed at this hotel, and overall, it was a good experience. The room was spacious and clean, and its proximity to both the subway station and the beach was a significant advantage. However, there is room for improvement in terms of customer service; I hope they can be more friendly and proactive.
The location was easy walking distance from a lot of tourist-heavy places, restaurants, and shops. Nice, decent quality hotel so dedicated to cleaning that the guy would come by CONSTANTLY to try and clean your room if it hadn't been done yet (bit odd, especially if you were trying to sleep in!).
I stayed here to attend a conference at the Xiamen International Conference Center, which is connected to the hotel. The room was comfortable and the hotel facilities were pretty good. The surrounding area is quite nice, with a pathway along the beach and a shopping mall nearby.
We had a wonderful stay. The breakfast buffet was very good, the hotel was a 5-minute walk from the botanic garden, the location was central but quiet. Restaurants and convenience stores were just nearby. Staff were friendly and helpful. I would come back again.
The nice receptionist upgraded our room and we had a huge one bed with bath. The hardware are all luxurious but the cleaner need some serious retraining there was thick layer of dust on the deco and vases and rubbish littering the lift…not exactly 5 star hotel.
Breakfast - a variety of choices for ones appetite. The hotel staff is superb . Location is great with a great view of a Lake. Nearby neighborhood has some local foods to try. Although the hotel has different restaurant outlets and starbucks.
The breakfast was okay. Not much choice for a Muslim like me. But we enjoyed the Miso Soup and Cold Noodle. It was really nice. The hotel allowed me to extend check-out time to 3 pm which was really helpful as our flight was at 730pm.
Good place for a one-night stayover between flights. Provides good value for money. The breakfast included was very nice. The view of the beachfront from the hotel was quite nice, too.
- hotel staff at reception very helpful to organize all necessary health codes
- staff at pool very friendly
- good restaurants inside the building (Thai, Chinese, Italian)
Location in CBD, strategic place and still have so many choice of food. Pan Pacific hotel the best one you can trust. Like the atmosphere, room and facilities.
