Beautifully manicured grounds, with abundant foliage and a gated yard in which to park your car. Property is set back from main part of town, yet only a few minutes walk to get to most everything.

Loved the proximity to the beach, and that we could walk to lots of restaurants and shops. The little pool was very nice for cooling off after a hot day, and the breakfast was great. The ambiance was a bit like a hostel, but clean and comfortable. Friendly staff, laundry available and a community kitchen .

Samara is a fairly busy small town that has a lovely beach.
Samara is a fairly busy small town that has a lovely beach. There are many other beaches nearby. It has quite a few restaurants and cafes to choose from. Lots of great fish. Prices are "reasonable" by comparison with some fancier locations along the coast, but all prices in US dollars are high for Canadians.
Just two hours from Liberia airport, this town has a laid back feel. Not sure how long that will last.

Samara is a funky little beach town with lots of little eateries and shops, and a number of restaurants right on the beach undercover with enough variety to make it interesting. There were also enough activities and beaches in the area to enjoy.

This is a great little town with a beautiful beach and yummy food options. We wish we could have spent more time here to explore the different restaurants a bit more. We hope to come back soon! We also really enjoyed the neighboring beach of Carrillo, which we drove to - but it didn't have food options the way Samara did.

A wonderful walkable town with many restaurants, excellent couple massages, friendly community, and beautiful beaches. I did the Warner preserve tour with a native Samarian - he was EXCELLENT - a fantastic visit. My husband and I are thinking about coming back and staying much longer. The community seems very low key - just the right pace for us :)

The beach and ocean are beautiful.
The beach and ocean are beautiful. There are lots of restaurants and fun bars to have a drink. The city government has to work harder at keeping the town clean. Sidewalks, store fronts and some restaurants need to be improved, there were so many flies at one of the restaurants where we ate, that we ended up having to leave. There is very limited parking, there should be a place where excursion buses can park further away from town, it feels chaotic.
The owners were so personable as well as all the staff! They arranged an amazing turtle excursion for us where we saw hundreds of turtles hatching. Absolutely amazing! We were greeted on the first day of opening after being closed for Sept/Oct, we were surprised with an upgraded room. Our Casita was spectacular with an outdoor shower! The grounds are one of the prettiest we've seen in Costa Rica, lots of animals visiting us, raccoons and coatis. The pool was refreshing and there was a trail from the property to a secret beach.
This stay was perfect! If you are looking for being in touch with Costa Rica’s wonderful nature then this is the place for you! Celine was the nicest and made sure everything was good for us. The tent is surprisingly comfortable, with very very little insects. However, if you do not like being around animals of if tiny bugs bother you it’s not worth to come and then complain :) just know what to expect and enjoy the wonderful shade under the florest trees, with families of monkeys and coatis walking around
This is a beautiful boutique property a 2 minute walk along a dirt track to the most southerly spot on Playa Samara. We loved that spot on the beach which we mainly had to ourselves. The hotel have plenty of beach chairs, umbrellas and towels which you can borrow.
Our room was very large with a lovely seating area and a patio.
The breakfast was excellent and we also ate there on 3 evenings and enjoyed our meals especially the dips.
The staff are always friendly and cheerful.
The lodge and gardens were exceptionally designed and rooms were modern, bright and airy but maintained a distinctly Costa Rican feel. Hosts/owners were super-friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them; they organized a number of local tours for us and these, and all their dining recommendations were great! I would not hesitate to stay again or recommend this exceptional place to anyone.
By far, our favorite place to stay in Costa Rica! A perfect oasis, a true garden of eden. Not only were the grounds kept perfectly and the bungalows gorgeous, but Emma and her sweet family made it feel like home. The pool area was also so wonderful and peaceful, lots of cozy little nooks to chill out in and birds and iguanas everywhere. If I could give it 6 stars I would! Highly recommend!!!
Location: Easy access to town. If you stay in hotels located farther east than this hotel, it is recommended to walk on beach to/from town.
Beach: stunning and super clean. we really like to relax in the cabana. they have also several beach chairs are on the beach.
Restaurant: The taste is good. they take time, but we were there on vacation. It was not problem.
Location - it is about 5-10 minute walk from the Samara beach
Friendly staff and guests - super easy to talk and make friends! Not only the kitchen area is sociable, but the second floor where the dormitory rooms are is equipped with beds on the lobby, which makes it easy to chat
Cute dogs and a cat at the property!
The location was perfect! Basically beachfront because it took a 2 minute walk to get there! I liked how the rooms were private and you can sit outside and hangout. The pool was amazing! Very nice place. I have been to Samara before this trip a few times and this is the best hotel I stayed at. Very nice staff as well.
Easy walking distance to the town of Samara. When you walk inside the tropical landscape of the hotel grounds you leave the busy, disheveled town vibe of Samara behind. Use of the outdoor kitchen facility and the tables to prepare meals and play cards was great. Big shower in the bathroom with good natural lighting.
We were so happy to find this gem in Samara. The price is very reasonable for the comfort of the room and the facilities, including a large pool. The hotel is 5 min walking to the main part of Samara. To top it off, the hosts are very friendly and are always willing to share recommendations of things to do nearby.
The owner was really lovely, helped with any matter, high level service. The room was clean, water very hot unlike other places in Costa Rica. Very close to the beach and to the center of city. beautiful view from the property. Washing machine is accessible and generally the place is quiet and cozy.
I was very pleased with my stay at Hotel Macao. I stayed for a full week and the location, staff, and accommodations were well above my expectations. Breakfast was provided, the property was so well kept, and you really can’t beat being a few steps away from the beach. It’s a hidden gem in Samara!
Very well located hotel in Samara. You get a sense that you are staying in a traditional Costa Rican lodging here not only because of the decor but the friendly hosts. Danielle and Luis are very friendly as are the housekeeping staff. Close to restaurants, shops, Samara beach and bus stop.
It’s just Minutes to drive from Samara beach , has a beautiful secret beach that is about a 20 minute walk through the jungle with only a handful of people at sunset , swimming at 11 pm , well equipped kitchen , outdoor shower, swimming pool and staff.
Great rooms, quiet location and close to the beach, amazing breakfast, beautiful and clean pools and incredible hosts. Would go back anytime! Best hotel we stayed in during our 14 day Costa Rica trip. Can‘t recommend enough!
Super lovely staff, great room and the most amazing breakfast ever. The chef was so lovely, giving us advice on where to go and what to do in the area. Really great experience in a lovely place of Costa Rica!
The meals we had were excellentLocation was great close to beach view of beach from hotel was awesome. Samara was close enough for shopping and options to eat
Everything was perfect. The owners were very friendly and helpful. I would choose this Lodge right again. It was our best accomodation in Costa Rica so far!
