Nice location amd cheap, compared to other facilities. Easy to book trips in the park. Staff spoke good english. We booked for 4 nights, but this appeared to be a bit long, so we decided to leave 1 night early, this was refunded without question.

Set in the rainforest of Tortuguero it is in a beautiful and secluded location accessible by ferry boat from the mainland. We got the public ferry from La Pavona and left our car there.
The pool area is lovely and there is a short trail where several guided tours visit to walk round each day.
The rooms are nice, clean and bug free. Basic provisions, no coffee/tea facilities or fridge which we found useful in other places as we travelled.
Reception were really friendly and helpful.
Surrounded by animals, Spider monkeys were jumping on our roof, there are lots of birds, iguanas, armadillos and more all in the grounds.
Tortuguero isn’t known for its places to eat out and we found eating at the hotel very reasonably priced and convenient.
Cabinas Balcon del Mar Tortuguero is just 100 metres from hiking and fishing at Tortuguero National Park. Free WiFi access is available. The beach is just steps away.

From San Jose, Costa Rica, take a 30-minute domestic flight or a 3-hour bus to Limon, then a 2-hour boat ride to Tortuguero. International travellers should fly to San Jose, then follow the same route.
The most convenient airport for both domestic and international travellers is Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José, Costa Rica. It's approximately 115 km from Tortuguero and offers numerous connecting flights worldwide.

What a gem.
What a gem. We had three nights here but in hindsight could have done two (a lot of people just do one). Two nights gives you a chance to soak up the atmosphere and explore the village from end to end.
It was an experience getting there - a 1hr boat trip (which can be longer depending on the water levels). On arrival we were surprised at the number of bars and restaurants - a huge variety. Many on the waterfront and how wonderful to have no cars. Our hotel met us at the wharf and transferred our luggage.
The hotels are right amongst the locals houses - so you really get to know the village and can hear all the 'goings on'. Just walking around you see the houses, some of the challenges living there, the flora and fauna.
We did a motor boat tour at 9am - would recommend doing this at 6am as the forest wakes up. Its amazing on the water - seeking the birds close up, camen, monkeys and iguanas. You will see more animals on a tour of the forest but its still worth the experience.
The motor boat tour includes national park entry - but I would recommend using a guide in the park as despite what you think its really hard to spot animals without the 'experienced eye'; and of course its their livelihood. I also did a night tour - there were a lot of other night tours - we walked along the route to the airport so it didn't feel super secluded - but we did see an armadillo, spiders, a snake, sloth and an iguana. Just goes to show nature is all around us - but again I would never have seen it without the experienced guide.
Overall its quite an experience and would suggest Tortuguera is a 'must have' on a Costa Rica itinerary.

Loved the fact that the boat dropped us off at the hotel's dock and picked us up here as well. Checkin was a breeze but make sure you have the cash to pay for the room and any tours. Canoe/boat tours, day hikes, night walks were arranged by the hotel in advance for very nominal rates. The tours start right at the hotel and hence very convenient.
The hotel sits on the banks of the river and the views are lovely especially during dusk and dawn. We experienced torrential rain one afternoon and during the night. The rain in the afternoon did not last long. The canals are accessible by boat, canoe and kayaks. Tortuguero is laid back and a nice place to wind down and experience time float by.
Great place to see Great Green Macaws fly by during dawn and dusk. We also saw the last of the turtle hatchings make their way to the sea. Wonderful sight to experience. The town and beach are easily accessible. The canals are teeming in wildlife. We saw green basilisks, iguanas, jacanas, toucans, caimans, herons and monkeys (howler, spider and capuchin). On the night walk we saw frogs (Savage's bullfrog, red-eyed tree frog, some snakes, and a sloth at close range.
The hotel staff were nice. The free breakfast was an added bonus. Laundry service was available for a fee. The town was easily accessible by foot. Local food at the sodas was fulfilling. Overall a wonderful experience!

It was like going to the Amazon River and experiencing wildlife and diversity. It was a multi cultural place with a taste of how locals villagers live , ocean access, river access and the best part is watching conservation of turtles. Turtle night tour is a must do!!?

Town was better than pictured. Walking to everything is easy. Favorite restaurants were Miss Miriams next to the football field and Budda Cafe overlooking the river. Went on three turtle tours and the canoe tour. All great. Used Tuanis Tours for 2 turtle and canoe and Leonardo for private turtle tour. Grocery store carries beer and liquor at reasonable prices.

The Tortuguero area is considerably different from the rest of Costa Rica. Isolated from land transport, all access is done either by boat or plane. Opt for the boat if you can. It's cheap (around 8000 colones round trip from La Pavona), and despite being on a public transport you'll have a tour experience. The trip can take up to 1,5 hours, with safety conditions guarateed (life vests) and you'll be winding through the florest canals until you reach the Tortuguero sandbar. much like running down the Amazonas, The village is very small but with a great ambient of friendly people (general fact in all CR) with plenty of options for food/drinks, accomodations. Tortuguero life runs around sightseeing (National Park, turtle tours, and cannoeing in the canals). At night you'll have plenty of options for sunset and dinning. You're in a protected area for marine turtles and the mindset is all around that. Forget about bathing in the river or the beach, as one it's inhabited by crocodiles and the other with bull sharks,

Enjoyed the boat ride into Tortuguero from the docks at La Pavlona. Boat driver stopped to show us a crocodile in the water. The town of Tortuguero is interesting and its people welcoming. It is basically a main walkway just inset but along the water backed by a small community with a subdued caribbean vibe. We were very comfortable there. We wanted to go on a canoe tour and a guided tour of the rainforest but hadn't booked anything. There is a tour desk at the dock we were let off on but didn't give us specific info on tours. we reached out to Tuanis Tours and Jewwy our guide came right to us at our hotel and arranged both tours for us. He was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed our canoe trip immensely. Saw alligators, herons, snakebirds, monkeys, bats, iguana. The same afternoon, another Tuanis guide took us through the rainforest and spotted poisonous dart frog, a sloth, several types of Jesus Christ lizards, gorgeous plants and flowers. He was amazing. The restaurants we ate at were all good food and value. We ate at El Patio twice. Standout was Taylor's Place. While more expensive than the others, this restaurant is truly different. the evening was absolutely enchanting, food and wine better than some 5 star restaurants in N. America. I really wanted to go but when i called for reservation they said their machines were down and could only accept cash. We had forgotton there is no working ATM in Tortuguero. Fortunately, there is a place where you can get some cash (for a fee) in a shop across from Grocery store. I was a happy girl. You don't need much while you are here. I was pretty embarrased to take heavy luggage with me on the boat to Tortuguero.
Combining laid-backless with light jungle luxury for a great price this place is right “central” in the Tortuguero village (something that we didn’t realise how important it is when booking). The pool is delightful, and the beach-stretch also. Combining a morning maritime tour with a self-administered walk in the National park in the afternoon is splendid, and the place can recommend the best tours, set you up with massage in the in-house mini-spa or just be generally lovely. Air-con worked well.
We really enjoyed our stay! We stayed here for a few days as part of our stint on our honeymoon. The owners were so lovely and accommodating. They introduced us to Yareilas ice cream shop (which we went daily) and our tour guide for Tortuguero national park - Alexis who has a wealth of knowledge and showed us many things.
The rooms are clean! The views are amazing! Sunset. The breakfast and dinner arranged by the chef was so tasty! We really enjoyed ourselves and was relaxed.
Very clean and comfortable stay. Coffee and tea included in price and available all the time. Excellent location, short walk from ship and close to sea. Two fans in the room, ceiling and floor. Had a good night sleep and bed was best I have sleeped in Costa Rica so far. Our kids enjoyed hammocks in the garden area.
We stayed only 2 nights and room was cleaned during our stay.
Really helpful staff. Recommend! Would love to stay there again if in Tortuguero.
Best hostel to stay in Tortuguero! I will definitely stay at the same place if I go back to Tortuguero.
Mariana took really good care of us, she cooked us a beautiful, delicious breakfast every morning.
The rooms have lockers, the beds are clean and comfortable.
The kitchen is quite good too.
We felt safe there, the location is great, 30 seconds walk from a grocery store.
There are two nice areas outside to chill in the shade.
Sergio and Gloria were amazing hosts! Sergio took us on amazing boat tours around Tortuguero and even helped us know where to go to get the best hiking and food experiences. Gloria was lovely and made delicious breakfasts and kept the facility and rooms clean. We also got a special night tour with Sergio’s neighbor and best friend Norton! We saw many animals and fantastic nature with our tour guides.
Highlights:
The staff.
The accommodation - Price vs location is insanely off balance, as:
- It is a huge accommodation vs the price
- That is located in the heart of Tortuguero's main town.
- The National park is about 5 minutes walk away.
- It has its own dock for arrival and departure.
- It has (what is in my opinion) the best restaurant in Tortuguero attached to the property.
Very well located: next to the beach, close to the 'village' and national park. Ideally to start discovering Tortugero national park. I would say that the hotel, compared to other buildings in Tortugero, is relatively well maintained. It's probably one of the better options in Tortugero. The pool was nice to refresh!
Lovely room although it did not match the picture which I had explicitly asked for when making my booking. Food in the restaurant is quite ok. My partner loved the steak, the rest of our food was alright. Pool area is lovely, and the hotel is still walking distance (15 min) from the 'downtown'.
Nice place at the end of the village and close to the Atlantic beach. Staff was very helpful leading us to the hotel (starting from boat ferry in La Pavona) and organizing/guiding tours. Rooms rather basic, but useful facilities available (kitchen, laundry, small swimming pool). Decent WiFi.
Location is excellent, less than a 5 minute walk form the main pier where you get dropped off. Gorgeous views from Buddha cafe opposite the hotel. Staff went above and beyond to accomodate us. Great stay and value for money in Tortuguero. Air conditioning and wifi worked really well.
The locaion. The sound of the ocean and the birds make you feel OK immediately at Costa Rica. There is a relaxing vibe throughout the (small) archipel From the parking lot to the arrival you are followed carefully byt the staff. Food is OK and affordable for such a tourisitc hub.
We loved the Caribbean View. The room and kitchen + shared area are nice. The best is the localisation directly in front of the ocean. It was nice having breakfast next to the sea. The beach is wild and beautiful. You walk 5 min to Tortuguero Village. So total recommendation!
It was remote from Tortuguero, small, family run and very friendly. There were morning and evening boat tours into the Tortuguero National Park where many birds, animals and reptiles were seen. Willis offered guests a boat ride into Tortuguero a couple of times a day.
The staff was very welcoming and warm. The receptionist was extremely helpful: he helped us book all of our activities. The guided tours offered by this hotel are amazing. Celimo, our guide, was extraordinary!!! He deeply knows the animals of Costa Rica.
It was truly amazing, one of the best places where I stayed in Costa Rica! The hosts are extremely nice, the place feels like at home and the coffee and water at disposal. Thank you so much also for the cocktail on arrival and the gift on departure!
Location was one of the best locations in the town of Turtugeuro. Being beach front plus a 2 min walk to the main town was great! Breakfast served fresh eggs to order and other great food. The staff was very helpful at all hours.
Had one of the renovated room, which was done beautifully.
It was our favourite stay in costa rica, loved the grounds, pool, staff and experiences.
Booked all trips through the hotel and we were not disappointed.
Great location right on the river, nice for relaxing at the end of the day watching sunsets and the boats going by. Staff was friendly and helpful, and the included breakfast was one of the best I had in Costa Rica.
