If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.
People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.

Great city.
Great city. Nice and friendly people with plenty of places to visit, especially their natural parks. Food is good, and the water is safe to drink in the city. Although the locals warned me to be cautious but I felt safe.

We were in San Jose for 2 days; meeting a group coming in from the USA to walk The Camino de Costa Rica so met our outfitter and guide. We visited the Jade Museum and would have gone to the Gold Museum if we had time. We did a long walk in the city to visit a famous hotel ( Grano de Oro). It's a busy city during the day and we were warned not to walk alone at night.
The hospitality was excellent! The staff were super caring, accommodating, and informative. Breakfast was great. The entire facility was immaculate. The pool area was beautiful. It was short taxi or UBER ride to the downtown market and walking distance to other shops, restaurants, and casino. The entire hotel was charming. Staff provided umbrellas during the rains and often met us at the security gate to assist us when we returned. They always went above and beyond to provide the kindest service.
Santo Tomas is a historic jem in the heart of San Jose. Once you step into the lobby you can see the detail of the furnishing and finishings have been well preserved. The rooms are comfortable and there are several lounge areas throughout where you can relax and mingle with fellow travelers. The pool and hot tub provide relief after a day of exploring the downtown sites, all within walking distance. The (provided) breakfast is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful.
The night was confortable as well as the uncomplicated check in. For all sorts of questions about San Jose and travaling around Central America
we could talk to the very friendly English speaking host of the In The Wind Hostel and also to other travalers and guests in the lovely atrium garden while enjoying the amazing pancake breakfast. In all it´s an ideal and safe place to start your jurny in San Jose or even in Costa Rica, if your not looking for some luxary hotel.
Oscar, the hotel manager, is an excellent person who takes care of guest needs promptly and in a very courteous manner. He goes above and beyond to make the guest feel comfortable and at home. He is a well-educated, respectful and charismatic individual. This, coupled with the great hotel amenities made our stay very pleasant. I would definitely book this hotel again if I had to come back to the US Embassy in Pavas, San José, Costa Rica for another appointment.
The location was great, in a neat area of San Jose. The hotel seemed nice, we enjoyed all the wall decor although our kids found some nude portraits quite funny. Breakfast was good and it was our first encounter with the traditional food. We did try the local restaurant for dinner but the pizza was not the best. Beds were ok, pillows could have been better and bathroom amenities could be improved too.
Lovely stylish hotel in a perfect location in downtown San Jose. Excellent restaurant, fabulously comfortable beds, spacious rooms, helpful staff. Nothing to dislike except that I arrived at the moment a pandemic lockdown had begun, so everything else was closed. I was glad that I had such a pleasing place to stay—a large bright room with great city views—before leaving the next day for other regions.
Lovely modern facade and reception area. Room and bed were both large and comfortable and the room was very clean. I would definitely recommend the rooftop restaurant at the hotel - San Jose is not easy to navigate at night so we ended up eating there both nights and appreciated having a place with good food that we could rely on (it also has a great view)! The location was very central.
¡Wow! YES! Every Day & All Day. Casa De~Leo. "HOTEL del Paseo" .5th Floor Penthouse with a view. The rooms are very clean and the staff BEYOND accomodating. One of the best places I have stayed, in Costa Rica....Coming or going ..You will be safe and all of your needs met here. A true Gem in San Jose/ Costa Rica. Pura Vida!
Our stay was short since we had a 1:30 am flight but it was well worth spending 8 hours here. Ken was very welcoming, the hotel is beautiful and was within walking distance to several restaurants. It is located on a golf course in a very safe area. If we come back to San Jose we'll be staying here again.
The staff is wonderful and very helpful. Breakfast was very good (bread, jams, juice, fruit, and eggs with a slice of tomato) and plentiful. The location is great for exploring downtown San Jose, walking distance to almost everything. The owner even arranges affordable transportation to/from the airport.
I can’t say enough good things about this hotel! The hospitality was absolutely amazing - the concierges, parking attendant, housekeepers, and restaurant staff were so kind and helpful. Great location, price, and breakfast. I would 100% recommend staying here if you’re traveling to the San Jose area!
Spotlessly clean in all areas. Twin double beds. Locally there are two shopping centres with wide range of eateries. Breakfast was good - buffet style Costa Rican. The staff were helpful with trying to call other locations where we may have left something. Great transit hotel
The place is well disposed for solo traveler: locker, box to store items in the bed, bathroom to hang your clothes and items, … Clean and facility on top. There is also a nice rooftop space.
Also the neighborhood seems much better than the rest of downtown San Jose.
The location of the hotel is great, close to downtown and there are many nice restaurants within walking distance. The staff there are friendly, the decorations of the public areas are unique, definitely has its own personality.
This is a very centrally-located hotel, right at the heart of downtown San Jose. The staff at the front desk were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The breakfast choices were delicious. The facility is clean.
this was our first hotel after arriving to Costa Rica. The room was fine and clean and it had a locked parking space, which is quite important in San Jose. Walking distance to the downtown.
Good location for proximity to both downtown San Jose and the airport. Good breakdfast with several options. The pool and the pool area a nice escape from the city.
