If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.
People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.

Great city.
Great city. Nice and friendly people with plenty of places to visit, especially their natural parks. Food is good, and the water is safe to drink in the city. Although the locals warned me to be cautious but I felt safe.

We were in San Jose for 2 days; meeting a group coming in from the USA to walk The Camino de Costa Rica so met our outfitter and guide. We visited the Jade Museum and would have gone to the Gold Museum if we had time. We did a long walk in the city to visit a famous hotel ( Grano de Oro). It's a busy city during the day and we were warned not to walk alone at night.
The location for visiting the museums in San Jose is excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is modern and clean, and our room was furnished very nicely. The bed was comfortable and the linens were of very good quality. Some reviewers complained of noise from other rooms, but we could not hear our neighbors. The rooftop sitting area is beautiful.
For me, the location was excellent. It is not downtown (so it's quiet, with no traffic noise), and there is, very close, a good bus service to downtown. Also, there is a branch of Auto Mercado only 10 mins walk away (best quality supermarket in CR, owned by Costa Rican company). Even closer is a branch of Pali (cheapest supermarket, but owned by Walmart).
The hotel is a beautiful old building very close to the centre of San Jose. There are good restaurants and bars close by. I read previous reviews worrying about the area but in our view it felt very safe and comfortable. The hotel was very clean and we had a lovely room with balcony. Good breakfast and helpful staff
The hotel did what it needed to. Clean and the staff were helpful. The aircon wasn't working properly and so they moved our room without an issue.
In hindsight we wouldn't have stayed in downtown San Jose as it's all a bit run down, but if you want to be in the centre of town then this hotel will do the job.
The hostel is located in a central area of San José. It a villa from the '50-'60 converted into a hostel with private and dorms.
The rooms and the common areas are suggestive, and you can still see the former use as a private house.
Bathrooms and rooms are not modern, but that is the charm of this hotel.
The hotel is a convenient and affordable option for a short stay in San Jose. We stayed for one night after arriving in costa rica. We really liked the breakfast. You can opt for continental (pancakes) or costa rican (gallo pinto) and the coffee was great. The staff was very friendly and speaks good English.
Great location between SJO airport and San Jose downtown. Perfect if travelling via the airport with easy access parking facilities. Indoor pool and gym well maintained. Staff is very service oriented and perfect English for those that don't speak Spanish. Good breakfast with very fresh produces.
Not far from the airport, seems a quiet area but as it was Sunday I can't confirm.
Big room, comfortable beds, big bathroom, very good standard.
Big breakfast buffet (now after some days traveling in Costa Rica 4 stars hotels I can confirm it was one of the best!)
Helpful staff.
Nice location in one of the prettiest neighborhoods in San Jose, within easy walking distance of the downtown area, the Teatro Nacional and the other sites to see. The rooms were clean enough and the breakfast area was pretty neat, with lots of plants growing indoors.
Stayed at the Sleep Inn for one night before joining a tour group. The Hotel is centrally located and walkable for sightseeing in downtown San Jose and the rooms are clean and tastefully decorated. Happy we chose this hotel among all the others.
Hotel is very new. Very well located. In front of a park
New moder. People is very friendly like in all Costa Rica experience we had. Good also for business
Room is clean and modern
Great place to stay in San Jose
it’s a nice modern property located a short walk from downtown San Jose. The hotel does provide an optional breakfast in the cafe located on the ground floor, plus breakfast can be bundled into a room deal.
Small boutique hotel with approximately 10 rooms with King sized beds clean to Costa Rican standard. The included breakfast/lunch meal was worth the money. Nice location in Amon Barrio/downtown San Jose.
As with most of Costa Rica, fabulous, helpful staff and a great buffet breakfast. Rooms were large and comfortable and it's a great location from which to explore the old, buzzy area of San Jose.
The location couldn't be better if you want to see downtown San Jose and the museums. We had the terrace suite and liked it very much. Staff were friendly and helpful.
This hotel is a simple, safe, clean, cheap and very friendly place to stay in San Jose. It's in a very calm neighborhood and a 10 minute walk from downtown.
