We've loved the location of this place! It is right on the ocean and has extremely beautiful landscaping between the room and the ocean. Our room had an unobstructed view of the ocean and we loved hearing the ocean waves. The pool area is very nice. Just be careful as there are lots of ants as there are everywhere in Costa Rica. The bathroom shower is to die for. The kitchenette covers the basics with a coffee maker, toaster oven and refrigerator. The a/c and hot water worked great. The staff are very friendly. Please be advised there are no small mini markets or super markets in the area so bring what you need with you in terms of drinks and food.

We really enjoyed this B&B, the owners are very sweet and welcomed us very nicely. The rooms were calm and the wooden environment very warm and charming. There was a fridge, a safe locker, nice shower with hot water, shampoo and AC. We really rested well, it is 5 mins away from the Cocles beach, a very surf beach though. Stores and restaurants are couple of minutes away, very convenient. The breakfast was great! Thank you! :-)

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.

A great laid back type of caribbean seafront.
A great laid back type of caribbean seafront. Good bars and a hippy vibe.
Some decent supermarkets in town and on the road out to Manzanilla.
The bar in the Puerto Viejo Hotel on Friday night is a must.
I loved the location ...jungle is at the back of the hotel and I watched Toucans every day and heard howler monkeys most mornings. The room was also spotless and smelled so lovely when we arrived. The bed is very comfortable and the owners are very helpful and friendly. It was a 5-10 min slow walk to the beach. To walk to Puerto Viejo is about 2 km and took us about half an hour. We ended up hiring bicycles which made getting around so much easier. If we ever return to Costa Rica we would be staying at the same place again. It was perfect
The villas are very well equipped to cook anything you like! You can tell the person in charge cares about maintenance and does a good job at it. The pool was cleaned everyday, I asked for more sheets and towels and they were provided right away. Communication was excellent and easy via Whatsapp. Highly recommended for a group of four or family with kids. Very private, you can hear the monkeys howling and all kinds of birds chirping. Close to all main beaches (Cocles, Puerto Viejo and my fave, Punta Uva).
I loved how helpful staff are and make you feel like part of the family. The hostel is clean, spacious and all around a great place to hangout anytime of the day. Gianis makes the best breakfast and can't say enough about his cooking! I like how there's hot water showers, laundry service onsite, clean drinking water, multiple fridges, lots of seating and hammocks go relax in. They also have great rates on bike rentals which I appreciated! All in all Kalunay is my favourite hostel in Puerto Viejo!
Great staff, great location, great food. Easy access to the beach across the street. Very clean beach and not crowded. Room with ac is a must for us coming from the arctic. The jungle all around make you feel you are almost alone.Tasty waves cantina make very good dishes and the size are quite big, one of the best place to eat in town. Staff always smile and can give you tip on expeditions.
Puerto viejo is near 2km, you can walk, ride a bike from Tasty Dayz or call a tuktuk for 2000 colones.
We really enjoyed our stay a lot. We had a beautiful little house near the river, with a hot shower and a comfortable bed, also an extra living room and a little kitchen. Could see monkeys and sloths, agutis and a lot of other different wildlife from our terrace. Free water, laundry and kayaks. Everything was really clean and only 5 min walk to the beach. Helped us with everything we needed. A tuktuk to puerto viejo takes about 10 mins. Everyone was really friendly we would def come again.
The property was beautiful. Tucked away in the jungle, peaceful with sounds of nature. The aesthetic of the rooms and pool area were the best I’ve seen in Puerto Viejo. The owner, Alessandra, is the sweetest lady. She was very helpful and accommodating when I needed to stay an extra night or needed a car to the center. The staff was amazing as well. They washed my clothes and cooled breakfast daily. Best stay. High recommend!!!
This hotel has the best location possible. Steps away from the beach. Staff is super friendly. Special thanks to Ricardo, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Rooms are spacious and food was also very good. You stay in the middle of a forest, 20 steps away from the beach. We even saw a sloth 2 meters away. This place is amazing, decoration was also very beautiful.
Loved the staff and the restaurant. Every meal and cocktail was delicious. Their massage hut is on the beach and it really is lovely to drift off to the sound of the ocean and jungle. Their masseuse, Michelle is the BEST. They also have a little shop behind the hotel, so you can get whatever you need very close by which is handy. The grounds are beautifully kept.
The hotel itself is located in a beautiful place (about 2km from Puerto Viejo) and there are a few very good and cheap restaurants nearby. Fortunately, the guests themselves are also very cool and made our stay bearable.
In general summary, we would not go there again because the negatives clearly outweigh the negatives.
This was the best hotel we had in Costa Rica so far: the bedroom was big and very nicely decorated, bed were very confortable, the garden was amazing and the location great to spend a few days in Puerto Viejo. We really enjoyed it a lot and we would highly recommend a stay in Cabinas Tropical ;)
The property was amazing fun, little trails entertaining pool for tbe kids, and it has its own little trail to the beach (cocles) lots to do all over town. The breakfast was the top tier, the best hotel breakfast I've had in CR tbe beaches are so nearby.
Simply fantastic hotel in Puerto Viejo. The vibe is delicious, the breakfast is incredible, the pool is very comfortable, and you are within walking distance of several beaches. The shower is also unbelievably good. Definitely recommend.
Everything! This was one of if not the best lodging experiences of my life. If visiting Costa Rica, highly recommend a couple of days in Puerto Viejo, the beaches are beautiful, and a stay at Colina Secreta is an amazing experience.
Ideal location near the town of Puerto Viejo. Such a unique building, lots of lovely personal touches. John and Eric are excellent hosts. Really enjoyed the outdoor aspect of the villa.
