It has a very laid-back, beachy vibe… There are lots of different places to eat with a big variety of choices, and numerous beaches and activities, and several markets, as well as roadside fruit stands to purchase food from.

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.

A great laid back type of caribbean seafront.
A great laid back type of caribbean seafront. Good bars and a hippy vibe.
Some decent supermarkets in town and on the road out to Manzanilla.
The bar in the Puerto Viejo Hotel on Friday night is a must.
We had a great stay at Terrazas del caribe! it’s in a great location - near to the Jaguar park and a short rickshaw ride to the beach! the staff really made our trip great! In particular, Michael and Yusmary on the front desk. They were exceptionally helpful in assisting us with finding taxis and helping us figure out how to get our CR phone number to work! Thank you so much! the pool area was also clean and relaxing. The hotel is surrounded by tall trees and one morning we were lucky enough to spot a sloth!
Staff is really nice but a bit distracted specially in the restaurant. But service was overall good. The hotel itself is beautiful, pools are stunning, facilities are spacious and beautifully designed, beachfront loungers are very handy, dinner food is very tasty and cocktails nicely prepared. Walking distance to Jaguar rescue center, Soda la Nena ( with good Caribbean food) and supermarkets. The spa is a massage room, but masseusse is lovely and the forest view is stunning. Highly recommended.
Eric and Sharon were the nicest hosts I have ever encountered at a hotel in a long time. They were always friendly and asked how our stay was going every time we walked in the door. They were able to recommend places to eat, as well as activities. I love the charm of the hotel, it’s cleanliness, amazing atmosphere and vibe. The modern amenities of the hotel and close proximity to the beach makes this hotel elite! This is the only place i will ever stay at when we visit Puerto Viejo again.
The bathrooms had HOT WATER folks and handheld shower wands. if you have been traveling throughout Costa Rica and backpacking YOU KNOW why this is special. For that alone I was happy. Location is superb. Staff is superb and super accommodating. I would certainly stay here again when I am in Puerto Viejo. It's right in the middle of everything and beaches in Puerto Viejo. Plenty of shops and restaurants just a 1 -5 minute walk away.
The people from Caribe Town are extremely friendly persons and very inspiring: they have a lot of suggestions for activities or places to eat and are always available to help (they even repaired our e-reader when we asked for a repair shop!).
The hotel is located at the beautiful playa Cocles, just outside of Puerto Viejo. This means that there is no noise, that you are right across of the more beautiful beach and that there is no noise.
I really liked the fact that it is a small hotel with a very caribbean feelling, no luxuries but clean enough.
The location was perfect as it is located outside Puerto Viejo but just 15 min away (walking distance) from the main center where all the bars, restaurants and cafes are located.
If you are expecting luxury this is not the hotel for you. It is a very rural hotel but with a very clean, safe and relaxing atmosphere.
The semi-private beach was amazing. The hotel had the beach lounging dialed in with seating on the beach, and a deck about 30 feet off the beach. They serve coffee near the beach (starting around 5am) in the morning and drinks at night. Breakfast was pretty good with decent portions. The resort had a super nice market attached. The room I had was quirky but cool. It was a great value for money.
Such an amazing space! We enjoyed our stay immensely and the beautiful ocean view room. Waking up almost every morning to a family of howling monkeys in the trees was definitely a plus. Beautiful, nature filled grounds with the private beach just made this hotel feel like a little oasis.
Vito and his staff went above and beyond for us our whole stay and made us feel so welcome!
The breakfast was always delicious and abundant. Close to beaches and good restaurants. Far from Puerto Viejo which is fine because once the traffic hits, it's impossible to cross the one-way bridges. The howler monkeys are by far the best who like to eat the little nuts off the tree and then drop them on the tin roofs. LOUD - you would think it's raining. LOL
for 3 nights we did stay in the only cottage with air conditioning (Deluxe Bungalow), which is highly recommended even though a little more expensive. The bungalow was spacies, with a large terrace facing the pure nature and only a short walk to the almost private beautiful beach. We would stay there again. One of our best hotel experiences during our round trip.
The location is just outside Puerto Viejo itself, and that was perfect - you're a short hop to all the bars and restaurants, but staying somewhere beautifully peaceful and right by the best beaches. Rooms were lovely, gardens were DELIGHTFUL and it was all in all a great start to our holiday.
Very nice hotel with great staff. They helped mail back my wallet to me in the US after I left it in a shuttle - so kind of them. Thank you Umami Hotel staff!!!
Location is walking distance to lots of restaurants and bars, also not far from the beach (we loved Playa Negra).
one of the best places we have ever stayed at! beautiful and very welcoming hotel. Everything was super clean, comfortable and everyone there very corteous and friendly.
Roger was amazing! We recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay close to the beach by Puerto Viejo.
Lovely place which is a bit further from town but was quiet and peaceful. You can rent bikes from a hotel nearby and the beach is so close and it's black sand, much cleaner and quieter than town. WiFi worked well. Private kitchen and ensuite so you have complete privacy.
The beach across from the hotel was great for swimming and body surfing. The coffee and breakfast in the morning was good. Also having a water filling station was definitely a plus! Staff was extremely helpful in providing many good restaurants near by.
Simply fantastic hotel in Puerto Viejo. The vibe is delicious, the breakfast is incredible, the pool is very comfortable, and you are within walking distance of several beaches. The shower is also unbelievably good. Definitely recommend.
Wonderful place: best location, friendly staff brings you a customized experience, delicious breakfast, comfortable room, beachfront, plenty full of animals, warm water beach with golden sand and a landscape place to walk.
The staff was really friendly and they helped us a lot with organizing bus trips and everything. The location of the accommodation was great! Beachfront, and even possible to swim between the rocks near by.
