An ideal size city, big enough to have a lot going on, but small enough to be easy to get around on foot and feel safe even out in the streets at night. So many great places to eat, and of course the crafts markets including the Plaza de Ponchos (but be sure to check out the other markets more off the tourist track) are amazing. Outside the city, the surrounding villages and attractions such as the Peguche waterfalls are worth the time to go see.

We took a bus from Quito to Otavalo and then used taxis to get around very cheaply. The highlights were visiting Parque Condor (so many birds of prey to view in large cages, all rescued, including two condors), a ride on a boat (30 min) at Cuicocha National Park (its a crater lake created by a volcano), and of course shopping at the Otavalo Market (so many beautiful handmade items to purchase).

We went for the market, which merited the half-day we gave it. The local handicrafts and products are swamped by the imported goods (often Chinese nonsense and knock-offs) and household supplies that are of little / no interest to tourists. Even our most ardent shoppers came away empty-handed, which is unfortunate for the local vendors. It was a good jumping-off point for a trip to Cotacachi (famous for its leather but not on Sunday!) and Laguna Cuicocha, a crater lake with nice views and multiple hiking options, which we enjoyed.

Otavalo is lovely, the markets are amazing.
Otavalo is lovely, the markets are amazing. Just DO NOT STAY AT Los phonchos appartment. it is extremly noisey, the owner is a cheat and a lier. He will rip you off. He tells you one thing, then will rip you off. BE AWARE. DO NOT STAY THERE> Not to be trusted. There are lots of other lovely places to stay. Places that are honest.

Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself.
Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself. I did the laguna cuicocha hike on a saturday solo but had been seeing other groups and I was taken into the rocks off the trail by a man with a gun and knife. He robbed me and took advantage of me. It was the scariest moment of my life. Please please please do not to this hike alone and only go with a group. I only was able to visit the Mercado 24 de Mayo which was wonderful for local food before I left the town because I couldn't be there anymore.

The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self.
The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self. The market is flooded with cheap goods from China - microfiber children's clothing, trinkets, etc. It's hard to find the local products, and there are few left. Should be removed from tourist routes!
Has to be one of the most beautiful hotels we’ve ever stayed in! Incredible and friendly service from Marcus, the proprietor, and Isolina, who took care of us with her wonderful food and drinks. This was our first taste of traditional Ecuadoran hospitality and it set the positive expectations that we had for the rest of our trip. If you are driving, either get a car with 4 wheel drive, or plan to walk up the steep driveway (good practice for walking in the Andean Hills 😊).
It is a super clean and spacious apartment, still centrally located and within walking distance of major highlights in Otavalo. The couple that hosts you will go above and beyond to help you and make sure you enjoy your stay. The kitchen allows you to make your own food if you would like to. The shower has decent pressure and nice temperature. The WiFi works well enough for at least WA and streaming. We got an excellent deal, great value for money.
This is a fantastic little gem located a short walk away from the center of Otavalo. As you walk up the hill you don't expect to find such a lovely well-designed structure. The view is wonderful and the comfort is top. My room was super clean and the bed was comfy. And, the low price made this place the best value accommodation I've ever stayed at. But stlll, the hosts are the best, warm, friendly, and welcoming! Super recommended!
We spent 6 nights in a very spacious room just a few blocks from Plaza de los Ponchos. The staff could not have been kinder or more attentive. Three brothers, we found out on departure day! Full breakfast.
If you are arriving or departing Otavalo via Quito airport, consider getting a taxi ride from Diego - he is charming and knowledgeable, and will tell you all about his city, Ecuador politics, and his own personal philosophy!
I stayed in Room #10 for 4 nites. The staff was welcoming & always ready to assist. The attached restaurant is superb; perhaps the best pizza in all of Ecuador. The facility also has lots of travel info, both printed & virtual. The shower had great pressure with hot water. Also, less than a block from local bus stops to Terminal Terrestre & beyond.
The staff were so friendly, helping us with taxis, market advise and more.vthe room was really comfortable and cosy. Clean and warm showers. Great location, just outside the main centre but easy walking distance. We had a great stay, highly recommend if going to otavalo for the market and other adventures
We had a great stay at El Geranio. The hosts are very friendly and prepared us with information about Otavalo and the surroundings. The market is just in walking distance. Big and comfy room, perfect breakfast - and on the last day we even got breakfast-to-go at 6 am for the bus ride.
Beautiful hotel. The room was very clean and comfortable, the shower was very good. The staff were very kind and helpful.
The Restaurant was also very good.
We also did our laundry there and it was very efficient.
We recommend this hotel.
The location is excellent! The apartment is comfortable and clean. Sebastian is superb with communication and extremely helpful with planning our visit in Otavalo. We had a wonderful visit and highly recommend staying at Otavalo Suites!!!
Great family cabin with 2 rooms, living room, chimney, kitchen and BBQ area. Although it doesn't have a lake view, it's still very cozy (and cheaper than renting two cabins).
Staff is very friendly and food (typical Ecuadorian) is great.
Fantastic location, friendly staff, super clean and comfortable. Great shower, hot water and clean ironed towels. Nice rooftop to hand out in a hammock. I would definitely stay here again. Best value in Ecuador so far.
Very good location, especially for the Otavalo Market on Saturdays. Clean, good restaurant on lower floor and a nice kitchen for guests if you want to cook your own food. For the price, this place is beyond excellent.
The staff was very attentive, the location was perfect and the value was out of this world. It was really a wonderful experience. When back in Otavalo, I'll definitely stay here.
The location is great, right in the city center and close to pretty much everything (Otavalo is a small and easy to walk around city). The room was spacious and clean.
