The rooms ere clean and staff was super friendly and helpful! The restaurant is super cozy and has the best food we found in Otavalo! We also used the hotel driver on multiple days who enthusiastically brought us to the local sites and was timely in picking us up when we stayed in a place for several hours.

An ideal size city, big enough to have a lot going on, but small enough to be easy to get around on foot and feel safe even out in the streets at night. So many great places to eat, and of course the crafts markets including the Plaza de Ponchos (but be sure to check out the other markets more off the tourist track) are amazing. Outside the city, the surrounding villages and attractions such as the Peguche waterfalls are worth the time to go see.

We took a bus from Quito to Otavalo and then used taxis to get around very cheaply. The highlights were visiting Parque Condor (so many birds of prey to view in large cages, all rescued, including two condors), a ride on a boat (30 min) at Cuicocha National Park (its a crater lake created by a volcano), and of course shopping at the Otavalo Market (so many beautiful handmade items to purchase).

We went for the market, which merited the half-day we gave it. The local handicrafts and products are swamped by the imported goods (often Chinese nonsense and knock-offs) and household supplies that are of little / no interest to tourists. Even our most ardent shoppers came away empty-handed, which is unfortunate for the local vendors. It was a good jumping-off point for a trip to Cotacachi (famous for its leather but not on Sunday!) and Laguna Cuicocha, a crater lake with nice views and multiple hiking options, which we enjoyed.

Otavalo is lovely, the markets are amazing.
Otavalo is lovely, the markets are amazing. Just DO NOT STAY AT Los phonchos appartment. it is extremly noisey, the owner is a cheat and a lier. He will rip you off. He tells you one thing, then will rip you off. BE AWARE. DO NOT STAY THERE> Not to be trusted. There are lots of other lovely places to stay. Places that are honest.

Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself.
Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself. I did the laguna cuicocha hike on a saturday solo but had been seeing other groups and I was taken into the rocks off the trail by a man with a gun and knife. He robbed me and took advantage of me. It was the scariest moment of my life. Please please please do not to this hike alone and only go with a group. I only was able to visit the Mercado 24 de Mayo which was wonderful for local food before I left the town because I couldn't be there anymore.

The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self.
The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self. The market is flooded with cheap goods from China - microfiber children's clothing, trinkets, etc. It's hard to find the local products, and there are few left. Should be removed from tourist routes!
Cozy yet spacious, nicely decorated room with a comfy bed. Large roof terrace with great views of Otavalo. Big kitchen with two ovens and good selection of pots, pans, cutlery and crockery. Thanks to the kitchen, it's a social place while also being quiet and calm. Hot water that's really hot when it eventually comes through. Good location within walking distance of the town centre, market and bus station.
Amazing stay at The Traveler Hostel. The staff were all lovely and super helpful, with information on what to do in and around Otavalo. Incredible kitchen facilities for cooking dinners, and a nice space next to reception to chill and watch a bit of Netflix if you fancy. Great location, being a 10 min walk from the town and also close to Waterfalls and bus stops for trips out to the surrounding area.
Best possible place to stay in Otavalo in my opinion. The location with beautiful view and terace, but still less than 10 mins walking to the centre. The rooms are brautifully equipped with everything you need.. You can even use the kitchen to prepare your food. Last but not least the owners and employees are incredibely kind and hospitable people. Muchas gracias!!
Charming hotel, welcoming and informative host, centrally located, hot showers, communal kitchen, comfortable beds, spacious rooms.
Alberto is an excellent host and gave us tips and advice on the local places to visit, transportation, etc. When we needed extra blankets, a minor repair in the room, he took care of it immediately.
This hotel was simply sublime. The best part were the fantastic staff, all of whom were exceptional. Turn down service was a lovely surprise. This is a converted old building, so there are aspects which couldn't be changed, such a slightly smaller room, but we loved it. Bathroom was fantastic and snacks were welcome too.
I had a wonderful stay at El Andariego. My room was very comfortable, the wifi was excellent (I work online and had no problems with video calls or using the internet) and the staff was so kind and helped me with everything I needed. The location is also fantastic (right in downtown Otavalo!). Highly recommend!
The staff were all very nice and helpful. The hotel itself is tranquil and it is located near the downtown core so everything is within walking distance. We did a hike on a rainy day and the hotel took care of our laundry including our running shoes at a very reasonable price.
I loved the family owned and run hostel. Javier and his wife and family went out of their way to show me around Otavalo and offer advice on what to see. Definitely recommend you stay here for a personal experience with lovely people.
The hotel is clean, spacious , quiet with central location and free parking. This is a family run hotel, everyone is very friendly and helpful. You can tell they like their job. We like the hotel very much and highly recommended.
The Hotel is right in the center of Otavalo which is amazing! the kitchen and the rooms are good. everything is very simple but you have all you need. it was very quiet and i felt a little bit alone in this big house.
We stayed Friday night to be at the market on Saturday, location was one block from the market and two blocks from the bus terminal. More like a hotel than hostal, we got a room with a private bath. Very nice staff.
The staff was super friendly and helpful. The hotel is well located and is charming with a nice vibe. We also tried the restaurant which was pretty tasty!
