Beautiful historic city. We were there for four days and could not find time for all the tours and attractions. I would suggest a tour with Cuenca Bestours. Very reasonably priced for a full day tour. They picked us up at the hotel in the morning and returned us at 5:00 after a wonderful day. If your physically able to hike take a $5 taxi ride to Amaru Biopark zoo. It took us about 3 1/2 hours to hike the grounds. The animals are mostly rescues and well cared for with large enclosures.
Our favorite restaurant was by far Capitan. If you are looking for a gourmet meal this is the place, wonderful atmosphere and exceptional food. Our hostess and waitress were lovely and so committed to our satisfaction. The chef even popped out to our table to ask if we enjoyed the meal. The food was so delicious. I ordered salmon, medium cooked which was perfect with a delicious sauce. My husband order the sea bass and the sauce was so flavorful.
It is quite cool at night in Cuenca so bring pants and a light jacket. It is a bit warmer during the day but not humid like other parts of Ecuador. My husband and I are thinking of purchasing a condo there for seasonal use, definitely will be returning to this beautiful city.

Cuenca is a lovely city.
Cuenca is a lovely city. The architecture alone is worth the trip. The Pumaponga museum is excellent. There are also several nice rivers. Good food, friendly people, easy access to everything you want to see and do.

Cuenca is beautiful, with amazing squares and historic buildings and churches. It is also a city where people live so it has a wonderful safe air about it with amazing restaurants, bars and cafes.
We were going to stay in Quito, but it was quite derelict in areas, and we were constantly warned about our safety and not to stay out after dark...
So, we went to Cuenca and could not have been happier. I want to go back already!

We enjoyed the historic town of Cuenca.
We enjoyed the historic town of Cuenca. There are wonderful things to see just going down the street. There are markets, churches and shopping galore, Lots of wonderful sights to see. The rivers and parks are beautiful. We particularly enjoyed the Pumapungo museum. The Hotel Victoria is centrally located with a great staff (our second stay there.) The breakfast was fit for a king and queen. This is our third visit and next time we want to stay for at least two weeks or more. Taxis are great and inexpensive. We don't do public transportation, but it is easily available. Ask locals if you suffer from <soroche> (altitude sickness) and there are "scrips" for this. The people are warm and friendly. The Sheraton is out of town but near Turi and has a high-end restaurant. The Hotel Inca Real is quaint & historic with a wonderful restaurant, in the historic district. The Mansión Alcazar is nearby if you are on a bigger budget, and has a wonderful restaurant. The museum that is one or two doors down from the Hotel Victoria is beautiful, historic and has a great café as does the Museo del sombrero de paja toquilla (the <Panama> hat that really came from Ecuador) Don't miss the Dos Chorreras chocolate store and I believe they also have lodgings.

A great place to spend Easter week.
A great place to spend Easter week. There is a beautiful cathedral in the center of the city and many smaller inglesas close by. The city is located in a valley at an elevation of about 8,500 feet so it is pleasantly cool year round. Lots of Inca history here predating the Spanish by hundreds of years. The city center is very walkable but taxis and buses are plentiful and very inexpensive. There is also a Metro system.
Just wow! The room was perfect, the beds comfortable, everything looked modern and clean. But most of all the host was just born for this job. We've been traveling for 3 months now and Franco has been the best and most friendly host we've encountered!
Franco went the extra mile with a room upgrade, giving us an extra late checkout, early check in time, and the coffee (according to my girlfriend) is the best.
Really the other reviews here are not joking, it really is that good!
Everything! Great facility. Great staff, feels like family. High quality furniture and bedding, great showers, super hot water, excellent breakfast, secure parking in a very nice neighborhood. The cleanliness standard is the best I've seen in any hotel, anywhere.
If you do a price to quality comparison this is a truly excellent deal
There is a small shopping plaza 2 min walk away that has a nice cafe, deli, international ATM and several other small shops.
Very good staff, Monica the owner of the hotel and reception lady Lise are marvellous. They helped me with every single question I had in Cuenca. They probably saved a day for me with their help?l, contacts and recommendations. Hotel was accessible all night long and my room got cleaned every day. Also the breakfast was very good and for a good price. Highly recommend this hotel, they are lovely people with good feeling of client service.
The size & comfort of my room #C-3. The value. The daily breakfast. The hotel is classic colonial with a beautiful welcoming courtyard where you dine & take breakfast. The front desk employee Juan assisted me enormously throughout my stay, especially in extending my stay. Matter of fact, the entire staff, including housekeeping & restaurant, were highly attentive & accommodating. I recommend this gem in Cuenca without hesitations.
The hotel is located at the heart of the historical centre of Cuenca and we really liked the comfortable, cozy rooms. In addition, the staff of the hotel was very nice. After check-in we asked to change the room because it didn‘t had any windows, which was no problem. After check-out we were allowed to leave our luggages at the hotel and while we were waiting for the night bus, the staff offered us tee and coffee for free.
Villa Emilia Hostal is more like a small boutique hotel than the usual hostel. It has private bathrooms, large clean rooms, and has parking spaces on its premises. Breakfast was included and was excellent. The location was centric and close to many stores. I think that there is also a shopping center close by (not sure, but definitely a Supermaxi a few blocks away).
Great hotel with the most helpful and friendly staff I have even met (and I travel quite a bit).
Perfect location. Old building but in best shape. Good breakfast. Parking only 2 blocks away, I had a big car and it can be a bit difficult to park it but was NO problem at this parking lot. Everyone talked English at reception. Big room.
Hotel location was outstanding, in the historical center of Cuenca close to the cathedral, many shops, bars and restaurants. Hotel building is old, but transfered into a hotel with a very unique style we really liked. Rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated. Hotel restaurant very small and cozy. The food was very delicious.
Charming historic hotel with exceptional staff. My room was spacious, had a bathtub and a desk, and overlooked a beautiful garden area. Staff accommodated all of my requests, including arranging room service. Excellent location steps from some of the best sights, shops and restaurants.
This hotel was in the perfect location in the city center. Breakfast was delicious. The staff were all extremely pleasant and helpful. The bathroom was exceptional. We were amazed at the affordability of this hotel! Fantastic value for a luxury experience.
Great hostess and owner, Sonia, wonderful cleaning person, Erìca! High-end and comfortable seating in common areas. Best heated shower I've had in Cuenta. And of course, wow, the garden and protected patio are so pleasant. Nice breakfast too.
It was clean, staff were friendly, breakfast was awesome. It’s affordable! It has its own parking so if you come in a car it’s the best! Also it’s near the bus terminal! I highly recommend this hotel!
Very familiar atmosphere, perfect location! The owner Tony was very friendly and always open for good conversations, especially for travel tips and recommendations. Best stay in Cuenca for sure!
Nice hotel right in the centre of Cuenca! Nice facilities and spacious room. We were able to leave our bags in the storage room for the day after we checked out!
Perfect hotel to go when visiting Cuenca. The location is perfect, near the most important places in the city. Staff is helpful and charismatic. I loved this place
