An Ancient University Town with Fascinating Culture
In the south-west corner of Castile and Leon, the Spanish city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old City is one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Europe.
Situated next to the border with Portugal, Salamanca has unique architecture including Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Old Cathedral dates from the 12th-13th centuries and joined together with the 16th-century New Cathedral.
One of the most charming squares in Spain, Plaza Mayor is the heart of Salamanca and an excellent example of Baroque architecture. Enjoy a walk around the exterior terraces, savour an ice cream or relax in one of the picturesque restaurants.
Founded by King Alfonso IX in 1218, the University of Salamanca has more than 3,500 international students and teachers. Known for its Spanish courses for non-native speakers, the university houses a huge library with more than 150,000 invaluable volumes.

Salamanca is a lovely city and definitely worth a visit. We stayed 3 night and were able to see everything we wanted without rushing. It is a walkable city. We came by train and left by bus. We used the local bus only once, and that was to get to our apartment. We were there during Easter weekend, so reservations are important. If you want to really know Spain: Visit Salamanca. I think it is underrated for what it is. Every corner of the city will surprise you with its rich cultural heritage. Salamanca has a very important role in the history of medieval philosophy, being one of the oldest continuously matriculated schools in the world, where Jesuits and Dominican friars debated about the universe and the rights of men, where Cervantes studied, and where inquisitors were honed. One of our favourite cities in Spain - magnificent historic centre with a fantastic cathedral and jaw dropping Plaza Mayor. The university student population give the city a buzzy feel and the wide choice of bars and restaurants are generally excellent.

Salamanca is a beautiful city for urban tourism. It has the right size to walk around, forgetting about cars and walking without getting too tired. The historical visits to monuments are numberless and the gastronomy very good. The hotel is located 5 minutes off the motorway and is a nice stroll to the city centre on a nice sunny day or 5/6 euros in a taxi if the weather is not so good. Parking is free around the hotel and there is underground parking if you want secure parking. The staff are really good and friendly, the food is good if you decide to eat in.

All the main sights were in easy walking distance, and there were abundant restaurants and bars close by. They let me drop my bags so I could explore the city until my train left in the evening. A great little hotel. I hope to stay there again!
