Big city with a lot of history, restaurants and things to do. The weather is nice during the day, but gets chilli at night and a bit cold in the mornings.
A visit to the hot spings is a must, as well as Chicabal volcano. The city feels safe, and walking in the old center of town after dinner outside is nice. I specially enjoyed visiting the central plaza, Pasaje Enriquez and one of the big bakeries to have one of their famous "Shecas". and don't forget the Cabro beer!

The central park is very beautiful, particularly the cathedral and municipal building. The municipal theatre is a short walk away but is unfortunately closed since the start of covid because they still don't have any events/performances! I highly recommend the restaurant Don Carlos; there are two locations in the city and one in Salcajá. I recommend visiting Laguna de Chicabal which is located in the crater of a nearby volcano. Drive to what is labeled in google maps as "Toritos para la laguna". There they will drive you in a safari style pick up truck to the top of the volcano, at which point you can walk down 570 steps. Don't let them charge you more than 100 Quetzales. There are Mam-spaeking Mayans doing religious rituals there. It is very spiritual down there. I did not have the chance to visit, but I also recommend Fuentes Georginas.

I have been to Xela (local name for the city) several times over 30 years, and generally have liked it very much. This is the largest Maya city in the world, and the culture is quite accessible here. Unfortunately, this is not a good time to be in Guatemala. The pandemic, joblessness, and crushing poverty are taking a toll on the city. Sad. Hopefully things will improve. But presently, I wouldn't recommend Xela for the average tourist.

The Central Park is a must place to visit.
The Central Park is a must place to visit. It has a relaxed and cosmopolitan feel with people sitting watching the world go by and there are also good options for cafes and bars. Go inside the municipal building to see the beautiful gardens but also wander upstairs and see the fantastic rooms to experience the history.
Perhaps not very well signposted or attractive from the outside but do go and see the Museo Ixkik which is in the same place as the railway museum. The tour is excellent and well worth the trip. My only regret is that I didn't spend longer here in this fantastic city and will definately be going back.

It was wrong season, winter, to visit Quetzaltenango.
It was wrong season, winter, to visit Quetzaltenango.
Trip to the thermal pools, Georgina Fuentes, was very good amazing scenery on the way up the mountain of the market gardens.
Accommodation good value for price but we probably needed something warmer for winter.
Stay of 2nights in room number 5, 2 double beds. We asked a quiet room and it was. Shared bathroom very clean, real hot water in shower. Confortable beds, good furnitures for travelers in the room. Shared kitchen with microwave, cooking gas etc and a very nice terrasse to enjoy breakfast and lunch with Sun. Central location of the hotel in quiet area near a dominos and a big supermarket. We enjoyed a lot our stay and had the rest we need (except with bombasse but not linked to the hotel)
The location is great, close to the Central Park and close to all the restaurants. The room was very clean and was cleaned every day. Shower was nice and hot, which is a big plus in the Xela cold. The best thing about this hotel however is the staff. Michelle was a great host and was always happy to have a nice chat or to help with whatever I needed. Would definitely stay again.
Everything about this place was incredible - the bed was so comfy and the room was so clean.
But the best thing was the staff. I arrived after a long bus ride and messaged the owner about where I could grab food so late. Everywhere was closed but someone went and grabbed something for me from a place that was open - it was so kind and thoughtful. Such sweet owners :)
It was quiet during my stay, but there were few guests. David was friendly and accommodating. The shower got comfortably warm. The shower head has an instant electric heater, you will not get great pressure, but it was sufficient for me. You receive 2 keys, one for your room and one for the hotel's front door; this makes access easy all the time.
Casa Elizabeth is more like a hostel than a hotel. They provided lots of blankets which kept us warm during the cool nights.
Breakfast was simple and fresh, with a choice of items available. The hotel arranged a day trip to nearby villages for me. Price, location, and staff were great and I would stay here again.
The rooms are all very different and I was given a sunny one. It was bright, comfortable and clean.
The family who run the hotel are very friendly. It has a beautiful inner courtyard filled with plants and paintings. There is a large accessible kitchen. The location is central. Good value. Recommended.
Really cute boho vibes. I wish I could have stayed longer thurs to enjoy the common areas. It’s very tranquil and has great character—like the best parts of a hostel and a hotel combined, and none of the worst parts of either. Breakfast was fast, delicious, and with lots of good options.
Perfect location right in the center Huge beautiful room, lots of tv channels (only in spanish), nice central garden area, great kitchen area to use, free coffee, rooftop with the best view, drinking water, super, super clean. Wifi was very good. Girl working there was super nice!
Very lovely hotel with beautiful interior decor. Beds were incredibly comfortable and it has a lovely interior garden that is a great place to have breakfast. It's within walking distance of the centre of town. It's clean and fresh and the staff are very helpful.
It is always my go to in Xela! Not only is the hotel historic and lovely the people make this a wonderful place to stay. There is a parking lot that is walled and very safe perfect for the traveler picking up and packing goods for work!
This place is only one block away from the central park. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are spacious and the beds are pretty comfortable for a Central American budget friendly hotel. Parking is free and very secure.
The family members who run this hotel are very friendly and helpful.
It's very central located so close to eateries and coffeeshops.
The rooms get cleaned everyday.
I had a beautiful view on the city from my room.
Staff is very friendly and helpful, the hotel has great location and a lot of parking. They have a restaurant that offers breakfast and dinner. They also have roomservice.
Great hostel in Xela! Best owners - really helpful and knowledgeable. And super nice! The lady showed me 3 options for rooms I can choose from. And excellent price.
