Antigua is a very beautiful colonial city. There are many old cathedrals in various conditions. There are two that are easily accessible and you certainly want to take a look inside. The La Mercede is at one end of the main tourist area and the other is at parque central, in the middle of the town. You can also spend a few hours making your own chocolates and learning about the history of chocolate. It jade is of interest, there are tours of jade factories near the square. At he edge of town, about 15 min on foot, sits an organic vegetable farm that has delicious fresh foods. If the textiles are of interest, don't miss a visit to Nim Pot. Here you will find an amazing collection of textiles for sale from all over Guatemala along with wooden and ceramic items, and of course coffee and chocolate. If you want a taste of local shopping, take a short walk to the local market where you can fin everything you would need for daily life and souvenirs all in one place.

We happened to be there during the Lenten celebrations that take place every Sunday 4 weeks before Easter so we were happy to see the procession. The city was very crowded but it was so interesting to observe all that was going on. The city is nice just to spend time in. It is easy to walk around the central areas and there are many options for eating. As well there are many options for day trips from here.

Exquisitely clean.
Exquisitely clean. A great base location for visiting Guatemala. We made side trips to Lake Atitlan, vulcan Pacaya, and Tikal. Some basic electrical maintenance is needed for the lighting and the hot tub.

Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It is famous for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored after the 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua's 200-year rule as the colonial capital of Guatemala. Some notable examples of the architecture include La Merced, a low yellow and white church in the Baroque style. It is an integral part of the famous Holy Week in the city, with parades and rituals

It is an amazing place.
It is an amazing place. Some enormous earthquake in 1773 (I think)... and the ruins of all those churches and monasteries are still there.
The city building code is super strict, so all Burger Kings and the like can't deface the buildings with their usual oversized logos.
Very colonial... great restaurants... nightlife seems good, but I only got the short end of that stick (disco beat at 2 am from the building next to our hotel room!).
I go back every time I go to Guatemala. There is just too much to explore in Antigua and just being there is nice. Best during the week, though, since weekends are flooded with folks from the City.

The hotel is stunning - you're literally inside an old convent that has old artifacts and new art tastefully spread throughout. The grounds are immaculate, and picturesque, the staff is super knowledgable, and professional. The ambience of opera music plays softly through the space, and romantic candlelight abounds at the restaurants and stunning spa. The rooms with spa access have access to the heated pool and sauna pool, which is something right out of a movie. The food at the two restaurants is some of the best in the country.
This was my second time visiting Antigua Guatemala. I appreciated the hot showers and the beautiful garden here (bring your insect repellent!). For me, the hotel was not too far of a walking distance from the center of Antigua. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the plaza but there are tuk tuks along the way if you don’t want to walk. Blanqui was very kind and attentive during my stay and handled everything even though she was sick. She was patient with my Spanish!
Very well appointed rustic hotel, about a 15 minute walk from the center of the town. The rooms were in front, then there was a nice garden, then there was the section with the restaurant and pool. Hector in the restaurant was awesome and very accommodating. Overall the staff were all very friendly and even though most didn't speak much English and we did not speak much Spanish, we found means of communicating.
The hotel is impeccably maintained and staff are wonderful and very accommodating. I arrived early in the morning after a red eye flight and they were so kind to let me check in early! Breakfast was lovely, and the pool was wonderful. Thank you Lara and Sarah for your help with shuttles and the volcano tour, all of the staff there were fantastic! Would highly recommend :)
* Quiet, clean, facility * friendly and helpful staff, * amazing views of volcanoes on the roof top patio, * free delicious breakfast, * use of kitchen facilities, * walking distance to downtown, * and very important: host made transportation arrangements from and to GUA airport so we didn't have to worry
The facilities and room were exceptional! The pools were great and the breakfasts were very tasty. All the staff were very helpful and kind and very accommodating to my needs. The cleanliness of this hotel was beyond my expectations. The gym and sauna also need updating.
The Casa ELA is all what you want for a relaxing holiday, great rooms, full kitchen, an amazing terrace from which you can see eruptions and a sweet dog by your side, but most importantly the hosts are amazing and make you feel 100% welcome!
Thank you Alvaro and Lupita! :)
The hotel is very cute with an eclectic assortment of art, great textiles, high ceilings, spacious rooms, and great views of volcanoes. The location was great and close to everything you might want. The pool was lovely and views from the pool, even better.
The location was perfect for Semana Santa. The staff was incredible and accommodating. The room was cleaned daily and toiletries were replenished daily. The staff were really helpful in getting transportation. I love the terrace!
Very friendly staff. Washrooms were kept in clean condition. Really liked the breakfast. Great location. There was a fan in the room which definitely came in use. Can book any tours or transportation required at reception.
Did not eat breakfast at the hotel but had a wonderful room with a view of the courtyard. Also had close access to the rooftop patio and enjoyed this. Staff was super helpful in arranging side trips and transportation.
The hotel is amazing, really lovely in a great location with a nice pool. The bed was big and very comfortable. The breakfast was not included in our room rate, but we did get it one morning and it was outstanding.
Helped us book an extra night and helped get everything organized. Willing to help any way they could. Very good centralized location and very good priced excursion. Helped with laundry and transportation as well.
Very helpful and kind hosts. Arranged transportation from Guatemala City airport with no hassle, as well as transportation from Antigua to San Pedro. Great location, good recommendations on places to eat locally.
Overall very accommodating and very close to everything. The staff was friendly and helped answer questions for us. They were great to help provide transportation from the airport and to head to the airport.
