Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.
On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. The Elephant Fountain is the city’s symbol and the entrance to the main shopping area. Surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings, Piazza del Duomo is a popular meeting point for tourists and locals.
Dedicated to Saint Agata and built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, the Duomo has an impressive facade that is one of Gia Battista Vaccarini’s masterpieces. The cathedral’s dome dates to 1802, while in the vaulted interior is the grave of the well-known composer Vincenzo Bellini.
Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.
With the busiest airport in Sicily, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Catania is easily accessible by numerous European destinations like Munich, Rome and London. You can stay in one of the Catania hotels, guest houses or hostels Booking.com offers.

The best location with lots of cafes and restaurants to choose from. In the heart of the historic district, beautiful! Wakable distance to everything even a Lidl close by. Nice view of Mount Etna from our apartment. Would recommend it anytime and a big thank you to Ricardo, the owner, for his warm hospitality.

Catania is a South-European bigger town as I expected.
Catania is a South-European bigger town as I expected. Nice old town, historical buldings, huge churches, good walks around. I liked the weather (middle March, but nice warmish and sunny). Tranportation is convenient. The sightseeing was easy. The cousine and the restaurants were super . We just had really good meals anywhere. It was very easy to get around and to find the places we wanted to visit.

The dirt in the streets and noise caused by the car and motorcycle obsessed locals were something that made me want to get out of Catania ASAP. They say that the name of the 'black city' is caused by the ashes of the volcano, but it's easy to blame a lifeless object while littering the surroundings at the same time. The historical centre and old town are nice, but 1-2 days are just enough to take a small look around. Then, if you can, you take a bus (but public bus transportation is very chaotic here, no point of timetables even if you find anything), get to the central station, and go to some nice place: Siracusa, Taormina, Randazzo, etc. These smaller towns had each their own charm: Taormina, a gorgeous tourist magnet with breathtaking views and endless stairs, Siracusa, a true gem in the south-east, Randazzo, modest but cosy, and loved and cared by local people. Or, if you want to get around without wasting any nerves, pick a hotel near one of the metro stations: the subway train runs quite often and regularly.
To eat, pick a place not very far from main streets like via Etnea or via Garibaldi - like Trattoria del Cavaliere: they have really good food with very reasonable prices. And always, if you have finished eating, go ask for the bill yourself - this is just how things work in most restaurants.

Catania didn’t meet my expectations.
Catania didn’t meet my expectations. The city is being ruined with graffiti. We had a rental car but even paid parking is nearly impossible to find leaving you to walk on streets that do not feel safe or clean.

Like all other Sicilian cities, Catania has it's own characteristics. The people are friendly and helpful, and there are loads and loads of restaurants, serving different food, and reasonable prices. A simple 2 Euro granita, or a fresh strawberry ice cream eaten on a bench in the main square, or a walk down Via Etnea, are enough to pass the time in a relaxing way.

ideal for shopping, very very good food and nice people. but could be much much cleaner a pity realy because the city and its supburbs have much to offer.Acicastello, Acireale and Acitrezza are little gems worth visiting
We really enjoyed our stay at Grand Hotel Baia Verde. The hotel has an old work luxury feel that you do not see enough anymore. The views of the sea, pool area and outdoor breakfast are are gorgeous. The staff is friendly and multilingual. We stayed here to get something closer in to the airport and wish we could have stayed longer. The beds are comfortable and like sleeping on a cloud. The breakfast was delicious. Nice amenities too like a gym and wellness center.
- Prime Location. Close to the bus stand for the airport, Palermo, Syracuse. Even Catania Central is 20 mins by walk. It is the city centre. Close to all restaurants and monuments.
- Very friendly staff. The staff is always available and very friendly.
-Clean! The toilets bathoom, rooms everything was kept clean and tidy
- Laundry facilities, food during off hours are cheap.
- Food served in the morning breakfast is simple and healthy.
We loved its accessibility - amazing location (near to Duomo, city centre and easy to get from the airport), modern and easy check-in, and fabulous furnishings - comfortable bed, bathroom - everything you need is inside. The host was friend and gave us great directions. If we come back to Catania - we would definitely choose the property again! If Catania is just the start of your journey through Sicily - this is your place to stay!
We loved everything about our stay. It was the perfect way to end our holiday in Sicily. The villa was clean and cozy and the staff was so welcoming. It was an easy walk to the sandy beach through the orange trees. And the evening meal was excellent. We initially chose this place because it was an easy 20 minute drive to the airport, but it ended up being so much more. I would love to bring my family back and stay longer some day.
We loved our stay at this apartment, especially the amazing breakfast pastries! Ivana could not have been more helpful. Unfortunately we had to cut our stay short after Easyjet cancelled our flight out of Catania, and Ivana not only refunded part of our booking, but also generously arranged an early morning ride to the airport. We hope we will be able to return to Sicily and if so we will definitely stay at Il Moro again!
We booked this Hotel for our last night before we left Sicily because it's near the airport. It has a beach area in walking distance, which was nice but not the best water quality. There is free parking for cars. The dinner was outside in the garden which looked really pretty (we just saw it, ate elsewhere). Breakfast was okay but nothing special and little selection in my opinion. Staff was friendly.
It was an amazing experience staying at Casa Alessia. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting Catania or the surrounding area. Great location and proximity to airport and main highways. Clean facilities and available parking. Extremely kind and welcoming hosts. They answered all of our questions timely and provided great recommendations. One of our favorite places we have stayed in Italy.
Our room had a very beautiful aesthetic of Sicily, the garden was a lovely touch to have your breakfast! The room was very clean .Everyone was very helpful and kind ! Great location in about 20 minutes by walking from the centre or 5 minutes with taxi (cheap taxis in Catania) . We suggest Inn the Garden Guest House as a very beautiful location in Catania ! Thank you for everything!
I transitioned from train to airport in about 14 hours. The hotel was a good place for a quick stay but not recommend for multiple overnight since movement of people make it noisy and bothersome. At least they didn’t have locals staying at place. Because they get travelers on vacation I feel it made it safer. There are elements on the fringes in Catania that I don’t want to meet.
I like evrth! The host was amazing! Paolo and his mum was so kind. They were supporting and helping in evrt bcs if the diverted flight from Catania airport, I was needed to find taxi and reach other city in a few hours. So the helped me a lot! Thanks for this.
Also, the hotel is only few minutes from the main road. So evrth was perfect. Thank you so much!
Near the airport so we ditched the car hire back to company. Used taxi into town and had a great afternoon and evening as last night in Sicily. Barman at the hotel was good and we had drinks there before heading out. Breakfast was good enough. Staff helpful and friendly. Could see Mount Etna from our balcony when the clouds cleared.
Excellent service from all staff. Good location very easy to walk into the main area of town. Was given a map and shown a good walking route to get all the main sites and end back at the hotel. Really helped as we were only in Catania one day, so ensured we made the most of it. Also the airport transfer was excellent.
We had an early flight so this was a perfect option. Good value for money, 5 minutes from the terminal, met all our expectations.
We took the Alibus to Catania city, and enjoyed dinner before going back to the airport hotel. Worked well
Excellent location for late arrival. Convenient, ample parking at premises. Directly at the beach. Easy to find. Large garden. Wonderful breakfast. Great staff! I came back and spent my last day of my short stay at Sicily as well.
Amazing property , over 200 year old with character , in the center of the city, nicely managed by Marco and Domenico . I wish I could stay longer but I now know where to stay next time I am in Catania , or Sicily for that matter.
Boutique and very safe hotel for the very unsafe locus in Catania. Being near Central train and bus station is perfect for travelling around Sicily. Very beautiful inner gardens.
Centrally located in the city. In front of the hotel there is a bus stop and a bus stops - Alibus from the airport of Catania. Nearby via Roma with various branded boutiques.
Amazing luxury boutique in a great location for exploring catania
