On average, 3-star hotels in Matsumoto cost £54 per night, and 4-star hotels in Matsumoto are £80 per night. If you're looking for something really special, a 5-star hotel in Matsumoto can on average be found for £293 per night (based on Booking.com prices).
Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
Great location, 5 mins walk from the station and bus stops. 15-20 min walk to the castle and art museum. I liked having the extra space with the superior pod so you had somewhere to get dressed, somewhere to put your luggage and a small desk. The bathroom was clean and modern with plenty of free toiletries and use of hair dryers. For 500 yen I thought the breakfast was pretty decent, particularly the Japanese breakfast with fish, rice and miso soup. Good communal area with free drinks. Amazing choice of manga to read!
My wife and I stayed for two enjoyable nights here. The hotel is very close to the station and izakaya area, so there was no trouble finding a place to eat. Some nice quiet izakaya are just across the road toward the station.
Super Hotel may sound a bit tacky as a title, though our experience was anything but. The staff were genuinely welcoming and very professional. There was also a special welcome bar available with self-serve drinks, probably due to the pandemic and people shunning dining out.
The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, possibly the best I have had in Japan. The buffet breakfast was delicious, many different options with a beautiful view of the mountains, they even included the top 3 recommended dishes people should try in Matsumoto. Parking was only a 5 minute walk and always had spaces available, family mart also on the bottom floor of the hotel and train station right across the road so a great location.
Convenient location with parking slot at fair charge.
Assuming that it is freely drive in and out of the car park within effective hours.
Remember go to the Reception Desk of the hotel to get details and a map of appointed car park.
Souvenirs, wine and Nozawana Wasabi Tsuke , could be shopped at the nearby supermarket , or at the Matsumoto station.
The staff was incredibly nice! He assisted us with so much warmth and joy. He even made small talk about our trip, which made the stay more personal and welcoming.
The hotel is just 3 minutes away from Matsumoto Station. The breakfast is decent and has many options. There is a welcome drink bar at night — free alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks!
Right next to train station (Matsumoto East Exit). Lots of restaurants nearby. Nice location and Bus terminal is also very close to hotel. Value for money.Though rooms were small and no wardrobe for luggage. If you have less luggage no problem at all. Breakfast was OK with Japanese style mixed with some western options.
A traditional ryokan where the owners still hand make the soba noodles for dinner. Great private onsen, included in your stay and amazing food.
A bus from Matsumoto station runs frequently and stops outside the property.
The staff were so considerate and helpful. A great stay overall!
The hotel package of accommodation with half board is convenient & value for money since we spent a hot day visiting the Matsumoto Castle & climbing up all the six stoeries with each step in the staircase in a 40-cm deep. A comfortable time during dinner is very appreciating.
After being in some less good than expected places in Japan, this hotel was a breath of fresh air.
The staff were nice and professional, the entire hotel was big and clean and there was even a special free dinner.
We will definitely come again when we are back in Matsumoto.
The hotel was so clean! Close proximity to Matsumoto station as well. There's a policy to remove your shoes before you enter the lobby and that makes it even cleaner.
Public onsen was great. Free soba at night was also delicious. Absolutely would recommend this to anyone.
It was very central and the room was spacious for a family. Breakfast was good as well. Service was great and the staff very kind and helpful! In general the area of the hotel was wonderful. Close to the Matsumoto Castle and there was also a convenience store nearby.
Great location, friendly helpful staff. A few minutes walk from Matsumoto station and walking distance to Matsumoto castle. I found the info page in each room in the tv that gives a status dining table and laundry service availability very helpful during our stay
The hotel is right next to the station and it offers bikes you can rent for free. The room was simple but clean, and I think quite typical for Japanese business hotels. Good enough if you want to comfortably explore Matsumoto and surroundings on a budget.
The location close to JR Matsumoto and be easily found.
Walk from the front of the Train station and you see the hotel in your right handed side
The hotel is very clean
Staffs are very nice
The hotel provides beverages for the guest during 15-24.00
- Centrally located just 5-7 minutes from Matsumoto Station.
- Immaculately clean.
- Room size was slightly bigger vs our room in Tokyo.
- Nice breakfast.
- Check in time was 14PM, which is earlier vs other hotels we stayed in other cities.
We loved everything about this place. We truly felt like home. The dinner was beyond anything we expected! Such a unique experience. Location is very walkable and near the train station and Matsumoto castle. Highly recommend.
Location is one of the best charm point of the facility. Both castle and station are reachable within 10 minutes walk. And still in the quiet river side. Kura, Japanese old style warehouse, is now rare and sound me nostalgic.
Wow, it is one of the best ryokan I have stayed in Japan. A very luxurious, boutique and romantic accommodation. However, what stood out was the service and hospitality of the staffs.
