Location was nice and so was the place. Didn't get to use, but offering free bicycle rent is great! Staff gets bonus points for saying "obrigado", which is Portuguese for "thank you".
Just a 2-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Train Station, Hotel Morschein serves a Western- and Japanese-style breakfast buffet for a fee and has free-use bicycles and a coin launderette.

Perfect experience for us.
Very close to station; terrific staff; large room (compared to Tokyo); and laundry for washing. Great restaurants nearby.

Loved the communal feel created by the franchise - you have to take off your shoes at the entrance and sanitise luggage wheel, I really enjoyed walking around the hotel without shoes, it makes the place feels like home. We thoroughly enjoy the welcome drinks, the night soba where all the guests congregate, the well-equipped onsen area although very busy at times, the manga area, the popsicles etc. I also think the room is optimally designed and anticipates every need, so although the room was the smallest on our trip, I did not feel claustrophobic and actually felt very cozy instead.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
The hotel was very affordable, and a short walk from Nakamachi-dori and Nawate-dori, and pretty close to Matsumoto Castle too, with local chicken dish specialty izakaya Ippo on the way there. I only used public transport once during my whole trip, other than that I walked everywhere. The hotel room was bigger than I thought, and pretty clean as far as I could tell. Even though we paid next to nothing for our stay here, a breakfast was included in the prize of our stay. There was free tea and coffee in the lounge too.
This was perfect for a one night stay. Public bath is smaller than photos (men public bath is the one with bigger outdoor bath, not women, FYI) but otherwise super clean since shoes off before entering the hotel. Breakfast was superb (but definitely catered to more traditional Japanese taste) and don't forget to enjoy the free night noodle soup they offer, in addition to the free ice cream and yakult :) Would definitely come back again especially with convenient 5 min walk from Matsumoto station.
the hotel is in a perfect location, 5 minutes walk from Matsumoto station with many connivence stores next to it. the reception was extremely kind, offering free drinks in happy hour every evening. the best part about the hotel is the bath house and amenities. a lot of free amenities and comfortable pajamas offered. and the bath house was so peaceful. next to the bath house your could find a free massage chair that is a great touch. comfortable stay with a spacious room and a luxurious bathtub.
We were so lucky to have a room with a view of Matsumoto Castle. The hotel is within easy walking distance of Matsumoto train station, Matsumoto Castle, and Nawate shopping street making it great for getting around. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast had a good variety of food so whether you prefer Western or Japanese style breakfast you should be able to find something. I was also able to enjoy the communal bath facilities and would recommend trying them out.
Well situated just a few minutes walk from the main train station and close to all nearby attractions such as the Castle and Frog Street. Rooms were sizable compared with usual Japanese standards and everything was very clean. Loved the pajamas that were provided and free noodles in the evenings! Staff were very polite and helpful. Would stay here again!
We had a great stay in a very comfortable and clean Ryokan.
The hosts are extremely friendly and advised us on places to eat and organised a ride back to the train station for our group.
The Ryokan is easily accessed by a short taxi ride from the Matsumoto train station.
A fantastic breakfast was prepared by our hosts !
Highly recommended !
We loved the decor and aesthetics of the place. It is charming, the rooms were very comfortable. The hotel cafe is great and the breakfast was nice. The location is perfect, being a stone's throw from the Matsumoto Castle and the lovely Nawate Street and other shopping streets. It is also not far from the station.
The Nawate guesthouse is located perfectly, close to Matsumoto castle, the train station, Aeon mall and right on Nawate street! Furthermore the café/restaurant on the ground floor is very recommendable! The guesthouse has the best kitchen I've ever seen in a hostel, is very clean and super comfortable.
The location of the hotel is near the train station. We liked the onsen and the hotel offered a traditional Japanese breakfast that was really good. We really loved being able to rent a bike for the day- FREE of charge. The staff were all very helpful and spoke English fairly well.
The hotel was so clean! Close proximity to Matsumoto station as well. There's a policy to remove your shoes before you enter the lobby and that makes it even cleaner.
Public onsen was great. Free soba at night was also delicious. Absolutely would recommend this to anyone.
Loved the cleanliness, the room amenities (clothing steamer/dryer was cool), the proximity to subway...and the breakfast was the BEST of all the hotels we had stayed at while in Japan (a total of 7). Next time we go to Nagano, this is the hotel we will come back to!!
The hotel was so close to Matsumoto station and some great eating spots. Worth the stay for the convenience to the station alone. The staff were friendly and were able to store our luggage until check in time. The price was excellent. I would stay here again.
The owner of the house is very helpful and he will also give you information about Nagano travel. The hotel is very comfortable and suitable for experiencing Japanese-style houses. The price is also very cheap, making it the most cost-effective hotel here.
It’ was my second time to stay here. This hotel is very convenient to travel to Matsumoto Station and Family mart is on the ground floor. The room is large enough to comfortably open two 29-inch suitcases.
This is probably the cheapest and the cleanest hotel I’ve stayed. Staff were really nice and helpful. You get a lot of Amenities. This place is really close to matsumoto castle like about 5 mins walk.
The food was an amazing experience - definitely the best food we had at a Ryokan in Japan. Location was perfect - best area of town and only a short walk from the station. High value for money.
Friendly, clean, large room,it is a Japanese ryokan and you will be sleeping on the floor
Shower is not in the room. Breakfast great .overall positive experience.
