Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

It is such a pretty picturesque city., feel of country life.
It is such a pretty picturesque city., feel of country life. A nice change to the hustle and bustle of city life. We went to the Miyagawa morning market and found great hand crafted items special to Takayama. We had the best yakiniku meal thus far on this trip. Wagyu beef was so delicious. People were so friendly and helpful despite the language barrier. We plan on going again next trip and stay longer than the day planned, a good 2.5 days would be wonderful for next time.

Lovely old town with great restaurants and Wagyu Hida beef. Bussling Morning Market down by the river. Excellent museum where you can view the Matsuri carriages which are pulled along the street during celebration. Everything is within walking distance and quaint streets and houses.

The walk up to the castle ruins and Hida no Sato were two favorites, but there was so much to see and do while relaxing that I’d encourage people to take it easy and not try to hit everything. Spend time in your ryokan or hotel stay, and relax.
The highlight was the walk-in private onsens for us. 3 onsens in total- small, medium, and large. I first thought it'd be nice if we could book the onsens, but walk-in was pretty great as it provides a fair chance for everyone to experience the onsen, even if they're not as prepared to pre-book the onsens early on. First in first served basis.
The breakfast was amazing! So much range and all so yummy. Japanese food, buffet style. Complimentary ramen served around 9:30-10:30pm at night too. Our stay at Takayama Ouan was so worth it.
I cannot rate this place high enough. Has it's own onsen; rooms of the high standard you always get here; walking distance from the station; very central to the shops and markets. Staff recommended a bar for a quiet drink and "Tonio" turned out to be a great little watering hole. Tell the owner you're a Metallica fan and you've made a friend. Takayama was an overnight excursion for me, but this hotel, coupled with a delightful little town covered in snow, then a soak in the onsen, was a high point of my japan trip.
quiet position, very near to the folk village. Great atmosphere. Host was super nice and helpful and spoke English (not a given thing in Japan). Room was BIG and in true Japanese style, even with a tokonoma. Lots of amenities provided (including Yumakata and jackets). dinner and sake (not included) were delicious. Private onsen was big and clean. Free bus for the station in the morning was very nice.
Felt like a VERY good deal for the price, compared to the other ryokans in Takayama.
Loved the view from our room, and that the Ryokan was at the steps of Takayama’s key attractions, including the Old Town and the morning market. The hotel breakfast was also so lovely. We felt it was a great way to enjoy some Japanese traditions. The staff were so attentive, friendly and helpful.
The Women’s Onsen that was located in the next building was absolutely fabulous- so well equipped that it made you feel like you were at the spa.
Nicest home/hotel we stayed in our entire trip to Japan. The stay gave us the best combination of being in an old traditional home updated with modern appliances and conveniences. The check-in lounge is less than a five minute walk from the train station, and the home we stayed in was a five minute walk from there. Breakfast was traditional Japanese and fantastic. Host was wonderful. Will stay here next time I visit Takayama.
The hotel staff was very helpful and even bow when you walk past the staffs. There was 2 microbus per hour from the Takayama station to hotel. (5 minutes). The room (Japanese style room with tatami) was big enough for 2 people stay and very quiet. There was 2 onsens. A big one on the 1st floor and a smaller one in the basement. The breakfast had plenty of food, buffet style and you can choose to have western/Japanese meals.
The location is good being within walking distance of Takayama station. There are also several good restaurants nearby including Matsusaka beef on the menu! It is a short walking distance to the old historical quarter and many of the towns sights and Matsuri Museum. The Morning Market is also close by aong the river. There are also several fine temples close by. Hotel was lovely decor and layout.
This is an excellent budget option: the full ryokan experience at a very affordable price. The rooms are HUGE and the onsen are truly gorgeous. The staff are caring and kind, the room is beautiful with a view of the perfect Japanese garden. I highly recommend staying here. The meals are traditional washoku style — we recommend upgrading the meal to include the marvelous Hida beef.
The ambiance embodied the traditional Japanese ryokan atmosphere, complete with both private and shared onsens. Despite its modest size, with only 8 rooms, the atmosphere was calm and inviting. The rooms themselves were spacious, and the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating."
These changes maintain the original meaning while improving readability and coherence.
Its far from the iconic Sanmachisori area and the beautiful 東山遊歩道. The hotel features public onsen bath, which is great.
The dinner was the best meal I had since I visited Japan this time. It was so delicious and beautifully presented.
The staff were also excellent. They were all extremely polite and friendly.
I would definitely come back when I visit Takayama again.
This is not a Ryokan in the true sense but it gets close. The room is big with its own small onsen/bathtub. It's very clean and comfortable. The outdoor onsen is nice. The indoor ones we didn't try (we only stayed one night). The beds are real mattresses. Breakfast is generous and in Kaiseki-style. We didn't book dinner at the hotel. Would recommend.
probably the best stay i’ve had in japan… traditional ryokan with futon beds. robes are provided and you have access to three private onsens (hot tubs).. just lock the door behind. good facilities as far as tea and coffee goes.. only a short walk from the hirayu onsen bus terminal which takes you to both kamikochi and takayama in a short time.
The room and futon were not as comfortable as some other ryokans I stayed in during my other trips to Japan. But it was alright. It was clean and comfortable enough. The location was good. It was in the middle of a tiny village so I could go out and had some dining outside the hotels and there was a local minimart or souvenir shops too.
The ryokan exceeded our expectation with its friendly and very accommodating staff (they all spoke pretty good English!), the spacious and comfortable room with a separate large onsen bathtub for the true ryokan experience. Hotel is conveniently located close to the old town area and minutes away from Takayama station.
What a great hotel for a lovely break in Takayama ; far from the busy, overcrowded cities. The big suite is perfect for a romantic escapade, with a view on the city & the mountains, which is gorgeous at sunset. The bathtub was amazing, it was so relaxing! And we had a balcony to enjoy our even more. I highly recommend.
Wow! What an amazing experience. The staff of Oyado Yamakyu were so hospitable and accommodating and really made the ryokan experience unforgettable. The meals were beautifully presented and so unique! Wish we had spent a few more days at Oyado Yamakyu in Takayama.
Beautiful modern hotel close to Takayama station. Onsen on 9th floor is a highlight of the stay. Stylish comfortable rooms with big windows. Staff is friendly and efficient. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you Mercure!

Our most authentic stay in Japan! We loved the host couple and all the people that helped make Sumiyoshi Ryokan special. We felt like honored guests in this home. The food was amazing! Takayama is a walkable town and we had no need for any transport.
Location - a minute walk from Takayama Nohi Bus station and a few minutes from old town. Free coffee. Comfortable bed. Spacious room and bathroom. Helpful hotel staff. Very comfortable one piece pajama/spa dress.
