This is a lovely and spotlessly clean hotel, with big spacious rooms, though we could only get one with three beds which was a bit weird; we would have loved the space for the third bed to be open. The breakfast is very good, and the staff is kind and helpful. There is a lot of good tourist information in the lobby.

The hotel exceeded all expectations! The staff, particularly Mihoubi Yahia, were incredibly kind and accommodating. The room was impeccably clean and comfortable, and their thoughtful gesture of decorating for our honeymoon with hearts made our stay even more special. Staying here was absolutely worth it, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Japan!

The location was great. we had a car and were able to drive into town some times but took advantage of the shuttle very often. The onsen was very nice. Free drink and snack late at night hit the spot several times. Breakfast buffet was offered and we took advantage of it one morning. It was very good and had a variety of foods. The remainder of the time, we found small coffee shops in Takayama before starting our day.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.

Lovely old town with great restaurants and Wagyu Hida beef. Bussling Morning Market down by the river. Excellent museum where you can view the Matsuri carriages which are pulled along the street during celebration. Everything is within walking distance and quaint streets and houses.

The walk up to the castle ruins and Hida no Sato were two favorites, but there was so much to see and do while relaxing that I’d encourage people to take it easy and not try to hit everything. Spend time in your ryokan or hotel stay, and relax.

Everything is within walking distance, there are numerous beautiful temples at the edge of the old town, lots of interesting delicious food - Hida beef the highlight - sushi, on skewers and in buns, mitarashi dango (savoury version in Takayama), warabimochi. Also, make a reservation in advance if you want to eat out and places close early here so be prepared (think it was 8pm) or you’ll find yourself getting dinner at Family Mart which was actually surprisingly good.
We absolutely love our stay at the ryokan Oyado Yamakyu.
Everything was perfect, the ryokan is really cute with a retro vibes really on point with the overall ambiance in Takayama.
The staff was also really kind and helpfull.
The room was really big and confortable. The bathroom are shared but we had a with a private toilet and a sink in the room.
The cherry on top was the dinner and breakfast, they where amazing with a beautiful variety of local food and a lot of it! One of our best meal during our one month trip in Japan.
We had chosen the room with private onsen with breakfast and dinner included.
We were shown to our room by an Obasan (As our room was deep inside the ryokan towards the end!), and she explained everything about our room and the facilities available! Modern amenities with the rustic traditional ryokan, love it.
We had an allocated private space to dine in at the restaurant, and the set course meal was really enjoyable!
As we spoke little to none Japanese, the staff were thoroughly helpful and tried their best in explaining.
Reallyy, nothing to say.. this place so far have the best memory i got on a hotel, ryokan. I felt like iam in an old Japanese movie. They give Kimano for wear and daily they clean it, they clean all rooms. Very warm feeling. Very friendly owners. Lady Tomiye and her husband is amazing owners. Breakfast was amazing, if you are not full you can keep eating. Everything about this place is unforgettable. I felt like home. And also close to the city :) with 10 minute of walk you can reach old town.
Ryokan Asunaro went above and beyond my expectations. The food for dinner and breakfast were delicious. The room was beautiful and the onsen was so relaxing. not only that, they allowed me to keep my luggage there while I explored Takayama for the day and when I got back I asked them to call for a taxi so I could bring my luggage to my next hotel. Since all the taxi were busy, one of their staff drove me to my hotel (in Takayama.) I am so incredibly grateful. Highly recommend!
One of the best hotel design and concept i have seen so far. Beautiful large room, spotless clean with many modern touches, but also incorporating elements of a traditional japanese room which tipycally uses wood as a construction material. The hotel is located right in the middle of the former merchants quarter, surrounded by the most beautiful streets of Takayama. The train station is just 15 min away by foot. I wish i would have stayed more.
Like:
- good price point, especially when all other budget options near Station were fully booked (weekend)
- very clean, quiet, warm (good working aircon)
- onsen water baths with high ceiling and white bathroom tiling-bath stools etc, no smells, no mold sighted, very well-maintained, separate for men & women
- common wash basins, washrooms clean
- flexibility with room change upon check-in
- helpful English-Japanese speaking staff
Absolutely endearing staff who add a lot of charm to this establishment. This ryokan is remote and that is the point, right there in the middle of the mountains. Original Edo structure of an old house, with well designed extentions and typical ryokan rooms. I love it! Delicious japanese breakfast in private rooms. Next time we will try the Kaiseki. Beautifull onsen which however, has no view over the river nearby.
The ryokan is well located for the train and bus stations, and central Takayama. We stayed there for a night before getting the bus to the Japanese Alps.
The owners were friendly and kind. They made us tea when we arrived, and later gave us some plum wine.
We enjoyed using the on site onsen, and had a good night's sleep on the futons.
We are both vegetarian, and the owners made us a wonderful breakfast.
The Ryokan is very well located and super easy to find. The hospitality of the staff is amazing and i really felt well taken care of. Very sad I could only stay one night as both the hotel and the city were gorgeous!
Some other points:
- breakfast was very tasty
-rooms are nice and spacious and have delicious green tea
-the public bath is very nice and relaxing to stay in. The water is nice and hot!
The rooms were spacious and so comfortable. We booked a traditional Japanese room which was so nice, the staff were all so polite and helpful. It is connected to the souvenirs centre, we got a voucher from the hotel. Breakfast at the hotel was amazing! We were served traditional style Japanese breakfast. It is the closest we could get to experiencing a Ryokan i Takayama that allowed kids.
The friendly staff who were able to communicate in English. To be greeted with happy faces in the morning made my stay very pleasant.
Buffet breakfast had western & Japanese food.
Location of hotel is walking distance to Takayama old town.
Naiwa Sushi within 1 min walk from hotel was a “lesser known” gem for sushi dinner.
Availability of Pte or family onsen was a bonus.
Location is excellent: right outside of Takayama station! There are a lot of restaurants and convenience stores nearby, and you can walk to Takayama Old Town. They allowed us to use their natural hot spring at their other hotel, so you should definitely check it out! The room is big and beautiful with an excellent view. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
This place is beautiful ! Everyone should definitely stay here if they come to Takayama ! It was more lovely than I could have imagined. It felt so traditional and warm and smelled amazing ! It’s everything I imagined a ryokan to be. The owners are so respectful , hospitable, kind, and helpful ! It was a wonderful experience ! So quiet and relaxing
Arusa san and her staff went above and beyond. During our trip we had a medical emergency and they assisted with finding a doctor, securing an immediate appointment and transporting us. The experience of staying at the Honjin Hiranoya Ryokan was truly outstanding. The people of Takayama are so kind and helpful. We can’t wait to return.
We loved Wanosato. It is well worth planning your trip to stay at this cozy traditional ryokan with onsen outside of Takayama. The food was delicious. The spa was exceptional. We stayed in a villa that had huge windows looking onto the river. Extremely romantic! My favorite part of our trip to Japan.
Very well located ryokan only couple minutes from the train station. The staff was very friendly and helpful, we were provided with plenty of information to move around Takayama. The Onsen was great, very well
organized and clean. We had a great and unique experience
The location is right beside the Takayama Station. And they have onsen in their hotel. All guests have free dinner in the hotel restaurant. They also have some amenities such as comb, bubble bath, etc in the receptionist area.
Very unique ryokan style hotel set in a wonderful location. The staff was absolutely wonderful!! We enjoyed the one chance we had in Japan to book the private onsen on the top floor.
the private baths were amazing and free of charge! the entire place is a cool cross between a ryokan and a hotel. our room had a great view over Takayama
