While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
The ryokan is only steps away from Zenko-Ji temple and thus very convenient to go to the monks procession and chanting at 5:30 am.
We had a traditional Japanese room and it was a nice experience. Also enjoyed the public bath house in the ryokan.
A bus from the train station took about 50 minutes to get to the beginning of the 2 km. walk up to the snow monkeys park. There are a few food places and restrooms.
Free cocoa, coffee and matcha latte as well as free amenities like facial cream and toothbrushes. You could rent loads of things for free, e.g. an umbrella, and the staff was very nice! The room was more spacious than expected and Nagano itself as well as the area with the snow monkeys were very nice! Super close to the train station and I can definetly recommend!
Comfy and clean bed ’pod’ and shared bathroom facilities. Nice bar downstairs, the beers are really good though a bit pricey. The staff are super-nice and put up with my terrible Japanese 🤣 the location is perfect for Nagano station (10 mins walk max) and then it's a straight walk to the temples through the main shopping streets. I'd definitely stay again.
The room was good, slightly bigger than the average Japanese hotel room (in our budget). Comfortable bed, lots of amenities (also for children with slippers and duck-shaped sponges).
TV, yukata, kettle,….
Good location with the bus and train station across the road.
And very friendly, helpful staff.
Super near to Nagano Station (just across a street 3min walk).
Hotel check in and out is easy, using a self help machine.
Hotel is clean, good amenities, room size is larger than most Japanese hotel. There's also a laundry room. Good service from staffs. .
Price is super affordable. Just perfect!
Excellence location. Just 2 minutes from Nagano Station. From the East Exit, cross the bridge, go down the stairs, see a 7-11 and the hotel is next to it. Super convenient. Room is old style but very spacious which is a plus point in Japan hotels.
Very good customer service! We accidentally booked smoking room and they switched our rooms. Very clean and modern hotel right next to the JR station. Free breakfast buffet that includes both Japanese and western options. Very happy with our stay!
Best quality-value hotel I've stayed in my japan trip so far, it's right outside the train station, very modern and clean, we had a room with bathtub and with a very nice view and they have plenty of high quality amenities available at the lobby
The complimentary breakfast was a pleasant surprise for us. We liked it a lot!
The hotel is a few minutes walk from Nagano station. There are many restaurants to choose from around the area.
It’s a relief to know that staff can speak English.
The bed was very comfortable, overall is okay for me. The cleanliness was okay to. The bathroom was small, but still okay for me. The most important thing that this was the cheapest but really worth hotel near (around 2km) Nagano station.
The location was excellent and the beds were super comfy! For being so close to the station, it was very quiet. The staff was super helpful to us who only speak English. The room is small but not unexpected for Japan.
All around the best hotel we've been to in Japan. Comfortable room, great breakfast, lovely and helpful staff, not to mention the most convenient location just outside the station. Would definitely visit again.
Ideal layover Hotel for Nagano. Has restaurants and convenient stores around and is a short walk away from Nagano station. They also include a token for vending machines, which means free tea/water/juice.
Great location close to Nagano station and with many restaurants and convenience stores nearby. Room was a good size and comfortable. The hotel onsen was great and the massage chair was very relaxing.
Super friendly and lovely couple running the Ryokan, the rooms had everything we needed and had a great atmosphere. The location is perfect very close to the station and Zenkoji temple.
Very convenient with many places to eat nearby. The hotel is clean with easy access to transportation, whether its the train, bus or taxi. Hotel has direct access to train station.
Love that the hotel has water dispenser. Location is strategic and very close to Nagano Station. Some room has nice view of the train station & mountain range surrounding Nagano.
Hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from the train station. They let us leave our bags as we arrived at 10a.m. Check-in and check-out were easy and the staff were efficient.
Very close to the station
A lot of space compared to other places in Japan
Second time staying with Compass, if I come to Nagano again I will be picking this place again.
Convenient location close to Nagano station in the direction of Zenkoji temple
Helpful staff
Clean nicely decorated and large (by Japanese standards) twin room
