FAQs about hotels in Matsumoto
On average, 3-star hotels in Matsumoto cost $68 per night, and 4-star hotels in Matsumoto are $102 per night. If you're looking for something really special, a 5-star hotel in Matsumoto can be found for $370 per night, on average (based on Booking.com prices).
Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
+ Excellent location with the best views on the mountains and river. 5 minutes walk to the bus station. It is also very quiet as it is the last hotel in the row of hotels
+ very friendly and helpful staff. We were late arriving at the Akandana parking (warning GPS does not always work in the mountains) and missed the bus to Kamikochi. The staff arranged a taxi to pick us up very quickly.
+ Half Board included a 7 course dinner which was very nice
+ Breakfast buffet had the best Western options I have seen so far in Japan
Great location, 5 mins walk from the station and bus stops. 15-20 min walk to the castle and art museum. I liked having the extra space with the superior pod so you had somewhere to get dressed, somewhere to put your luggage and a small desk. The bathroom was clean and modern with plenty of free toiletries and use of hair dryers. For 500 yen I thought the breakfast was pretty decent, particularly the Japanese breakfast with fish, rice and miso soup. Good communal area with free drinks. Amazing choice of manga to read!
The hotel was very affordable, and a short walk from Nakamachi-dori and Nawate-dori, and pretty close to Matsumoto Castle too, with local chicken dish specialty izakaya Ippo on the way there. I only used public transport once during my whole trip, other than that I walked everywhere. The hotel room was bigger than I thought, and pretty clean as far as I could tell. Even though we paid next to nothing for our stay here, a breakfast was included in the prize of our stay. There was free tea and coffee in the lounge too.
This was perfect for a one night stay. Public bath is smaller than photos (men public bath is the one with bigger outdoor bath, not women, FYI) but otherwise super clean since shoes off before entering the hotel. Breakfast was superb (but definitely catered to more traditional Japanese taste) and don't forget to enjoy the free night noodle soup they offer, in addition to the free ice cream and yakult :) Would definitely come back again especially with convenient 5 min walk from Matsumoto station.
The Japanese breakfast buffet was simply exceptional. Many traditional dishes were served, & good quality ingredients were used. If we return to Matsumoto again, we may book this hotel again only to savour its great & good Japanese breakfast spread. The other feature that we like is the onsen - balanced lighting, quality shampoo & bathing wash, & most importantly, a clean place to shower & onsen in peace.
This hotel looked a little too old for my liking, but I booked at the last minute and the price was good. The location is where this place shines though, because it's right across the street from Matsumoto station, and also in walking distance to Matsumoto castle.
Though the room was a little old, it was clean and the check in service was very easy and friendly.
Hotel is conveniently located near to the Castle and to the famous streets in Matsumoto. In 20 mins walking you can be in the train station. Rooms are big for Japanese standards, and beds very Conformable Breakfast is very complete with variety of options. The public baths are also good and convenient. Front desk team is very helpful and speaks good english
Well situated just a few minutes walk from the main train station and close to all nearby attractions such as the Castle and Frog Street. Rooms were sizable compared with usual Japanese standards and everything was very clean. Loved the pajamas that were provided and free noodles in the evenings! Staff were very polite and helpful. Would stay here again!
Incredible location 5 mins from the station and 10 mins walk from the best onsen I have been to in Japan. Brian (one of the owners) also provided excellent guidance on how to get the most out of Matsumoto, a real locals advice! Best value for money hostel I have been to in Nippon, top notch on all account - thanks for a great 4 nights in Matsumoto :)
The staff bent over forwards to help us and understand our few words of Japanese, very welcoming. Comfy tatami room, nice onsen, little village on edge of Matsumoto town with some evening food options but no breakfast options. But that was okay because we'd brought food and there was coffee and tea at the hotel.
The location is quite convenient, near the station and the Matsumoto castle. The breakfasts during our stays were very yummy and included in various types. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Absolutely good for value and highly recommend for anyone who wants to go to Matsumoto.
The hotel is within 5 -10 minutes from the train station. We walked to Matsumoto Castle and to shopping and restaurants. We were passing through for an early start to the Tanube Alpine Route. The staff was very helpful to arrange transfer of our luggage to our next hotel.
VERY Friendly staff. Directly opposite station and easy walk to Matsumoto Castle. I left a charging cable in the room and when I contacted the hotel they immediately replied that the found it and held it at reception until I could return 4 days later
Well located just 10 minutes from the train station and 20 minutes from Matsumoto Castle. Lovely western-style hotel with all the amenities (except no public baths). Excellent and friendly staff, good buffet breakfast in the cafe.
Beautiful Ryokan in Matsumoto. It is close to the Matsumoto Station in a nice area. The hosts are extremely friendly and welcoming. Delicious breakfast. Everything was very clean. I definitely recommend to stay there!
The hotel is perfectly located to visit Matsumoto Castle, the room was very spacious and clean. Very happy with our stay here and would happily suggest it to anyone looking to visit Matsumoto!
The room was clean and very quiet at night. The location of the hotel was quite convenient, being a short walk from both Matsumoto Station and Matsumoto Castle.
