Unfortunately due to my recovering from two breaks (ankle and femur) I wasn't able to get to the beach so I can't give you an account but it did look pretty wicked, as for negumbo resort what a great place to get a very relaxing holiday, really good bars with all the latest music and serious food in the restaurant's. I didn't really like Negombo, It has a dirty, noisy road running alongside the beaches which makes it really unpleasant to walk around. There's very little access to the beaches along side this road. There a few nice restaurants, we enjoyed Prego. I would say as a town it's our least favourite place we went to in Sri Lanka and doesn't really reflect the rest of the country which was beautiful. I chose Ziegler Cottage for its proximity to the airport. They organised a driver to pick us up from the airport and we dined on the most exquisite Sri Lankan food at the hotel. We even woke up late one morning (thanks jet lag) and missed the allotted breakfast time but Chamara still prepared it for us and went out of his way to make us feel welcome and comfortable.
