The area had a good mix of shops, bars etc and prices were reasonable. You can choose to stay in central higher end hotels or cheaper options on the periphery but tuktuks only cost about 700rps from one end to the other. Perhaps 1500rps in the evening. We preferred staying outside the main area because it was much quieter but so easy to walk into town along the beautiful beach.

Lots of choice of food available from vegan/vegetarian (steffi mandala) amazing noodles and a good chilled vibe on the beach or probably the best sea food restaurant unfortunately road side was Bambinis look it up, food is excellent and a very good price. We'll stocked supermarkets. A good accommodation choice either beach or jungle.

Hikkaduwa is big village and it has two beaches: near the village center (beach called Hikkaduwa) and further south stretching to Dodanduwa (this beach is called Narigama). Hikkaduwa was good choice for holidays as is close to airport and provide excelent opportunity to relax, taste local foods and be part of local culture and community. You can enjoy waves and walking along the beach or take a trip to any desired location, or taste fresh sea foods directly on the market or be part of local party. Kids could learn surfing or jumping in playful waves.

The Sri Lankan breakfast each day was delicious, we loved the egg hoppers! The pool was ideal for when you wanted to have a chilled day. We highly recommend the cooking class with the neighbours, very tasty and a really enjoyable experience (they make the breakfast too!). It’s also a short walk to the beach. Great staff and Mel the owner was always around to say hi. We’ll be coming back for sure!
