Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time.
just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you

The Medina and its surrounds are very charming to look at from a rooftop, however to be quite honest, spending time walking endlessly in the narrow and enclosed space felt quite oppressive. We weren’t interested in buying anything and it was a bit of an assault to see the endless offerings of basically the same things. The merchants looked resigned to their fate and the energy of the place just didn’t feel great. Kind of depressing.

Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina.
Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina. We didn't use a guide but google maps and it worked just fine for the main roads. But if you stay near the old medina and need to go somewhere via the narrow alleyways you can get lost easily! It's a maze where everything looks the same.
The people are mostly friendly but they will try their best to get you in their shop or restaurant which can be frustrating. But just say no respectfully and most of the time they will leave you alone.
Don't listen to people who are saying things are closed, like the doors of the medina or places during prayer time. Its not true and they only do say that to get you to another place.
After all its a beautifull place, but with sometimes frustrating locals, but they just want to make money and I understand that.

I would not recommend this city.
I would not recommend this city.
I liked the place where I stayed - the host was very nice.
But the city itself is cahotic and overwelming… a lot of harassement, a lot of con people trying to get money from you, lots of drug dealers in the street pretending to be your friend just to force you to buy from them, you cant look around to the shops because someone always wants to force you to buy something. I am an extrovert and this city was too much for me. I think I never got so scammed so fast and so aware of it all my life.
It smells miserable and it is very dirty - I don’t you are ready for the smell of the tanneries…
Almost no music anywhere, mostly just praying on megafones 5x a day.
We did manage to find some truly kind people, but the rate of those vs. the ones who just wanted money from us/to sell their services, was too much! Be sure you book a place with a nice host to help you navigate throught these situations and emotions…

Fes is an incredible city.
Fes is an incredible city. So much history and such friendly people. The sellers in the medina were keen to sell us anything and everything but weren't very pushy and took a polite "non merci" for an answer.
Lots of lovely cafes and restaurants. We liked Cinema cafe, Clock cafe and the Ruined garden restaurant. Cafe Nos Nos served really good coffee. Great temperature for January. Not too hot for walking about but warm enough to sit outside and eat.
Amazing history too, The world's oldest university and library are in the medina.
We did several day trips to Meknes, Volubilis and Chefchaouen.
A trip to the American Fondouk was interesting to see the work of the charity with local working equines.
Lots of walking but also easy to take a petit taxi when tired.
Our Riad was just amazing and we will be back as soon as we can.
The concierge, Omar, was the best staff member we encountered in all of Morocco. He was enthusiastic, kind hearted, and always willing to assist. You got the impression that Omar was helping out if the goodness of his heart and not for any remuneration. Just pure kindness. The Riad is beautifully designed and the located just outside of the old Medina (Rcif Place entrance). The Riad was well marked. Lovely little rooftop terrace. Very hearty and delicious breakfast: the baked goods were particularly good.
This was the first Riad that I visited in Morocco. My room was so beautiful. It was at the top, so it required climbing stairs. I was rewarded for the effort as my room had a private outdoor terrace. The hostess, Hajar, was very kind and helpful. She served a very nice breakfast, which I appreciated as visiting Fes involved a lot of walking! It is on a quiet street, and in a couple of minutes, I could be out of the Riad and into the medina. I definitely would like to return here someday!
Riad Idrissy was my most favourite Riad in my entire trip travelling around Morocco. The Riad is absolutely beautiful. It is beautifully maintained and in a great part of the medina. The staff were wonderful and friendly and made our stay even better. The food at the restaurant was amazing and the cooks were lovely. I would highly recommend this riad and will stay here for a much longer time if I visit Fes again. I absolutely loved the place, and it made our stay in Fes memorable.
Our stay in Dar Borj was great! The hotel is very close to the Blue Gate. Considering how easy to get lost in the medina of Fez, the location was perfect! Especially if you come by car, there is a very close parking place. The room was in a very good condition. The breakfast was great! But besides all of these, Othmane was the best host ever! He was very welcoming and he helped us with whatever we needed during our stay. He definitely made our stay different! Strongly recommended!
Amazing riad — the building itself is beautiful but it was the staff that made it the best riad in Fes, highly recommend. Shoutout to Medhi for bringing us lots of tea, helping us with a currency exchange, and calling us a taxi. Soukayna was wonderful, very kind and hardworking, a pleasure to talk to. She gave us a great crash course on the cultural and educational system in Morocco and helped figure out if we bargained well in the medina (which we did not). 10/10 would book again
One of the highlights of our 3 1/2 week tour of Morocco! Monique, the owner of the Riad has done a fantastic job in re-building and creating a gem . We stayed in a suite for 3 nights, fit for a king (wish it could have been more). Great breakfast, quiet place to relax from the hectic Fes Medina. If you looking for a place in Fes with easy access, close to the Medina, Riad Norma is the place!!
Thank you Monique, Younes and rest of staff for making this a memorable experience!
The hospitality of the Fez is unbeatable. Imane was such a great and kind host; she helped us in getting to know Fez and arranged our excursion to Chefchaouen. The room was incredibly spacious and clean. We particularly enjoyed the moroccan mint tea that we could order anytime. The breakfast was also absolutely delicious. Last but not least, we were beyond glad to order our last lunch in Morocco in Dar Fes Medina. It was the best food we’ve ever had in Morocco!
- Good and safe location (10min from blue gate by walk)
- Cleaning every day
- For Morrocan standards the breakfast is above average (I would still suggest to add some vegetable, fruits, less sweet/sugar stuff in general)
- This riad is comparing to others actually run professionally by a good manager Salah, he was helpful thorough our stay
- I think this riad is very close to 4* hotels, you won't find a better value for that money in Fes Medina
This hotel was absolutely perfect and this regards to the hotel itself and the staff. The room was comfortable and bathroom super clean - and trust me, this is not that common!
Fatima was ready to prepare breakfast even at 3 a.m., nothing being an issue at all. This was the first time someone was so helpful to me in Morocco and I have already been in Morocco 3 times.
Thanks a lot for this and I am sure to pick this hotel if I come to Fes again!
We stayed in Fes at the start of April, and have been travelling since, hence the delay. The hotel was an experience, from the delicious breakfast, to the welcome with mint tea, to the extraordinary Hammam spa but most of all the wonderful staff. The location was brilliant for anyone with a car, we parked just outside in a quiet street that terminated at the hotel. We arrange a guide and taxi to the Medina, Rachid our guide was wonderful.
Breakfast was exceptional and it felt more like being treated in a Michelin Star Restaurant. Very much impressed with the quality of food and presentation. The entire Riad is exceptionally beautiful with emphasis on privacy and never felt being in a hotel. Got upgraded to Calife Suite with private patio. No doubt, the best place to stay in the entire Medina of Fes !!! Rooftop bar was definitely a treat.
The Riad is beautiful, spotless and in a perfect location. Simon and Mohammed were so attentive and went out of their way to make our stay special. The terrasse is the best view of the city, spectacular at sunset. Breakfast was amazing and our bed was super comfortable. Our stay here was one of the highlights of our honeymoon in Morocco and we will definitely come and stay here next time we come to Fes.
Wow, this is probably the best place to stay in Fes! Only 20 minutes from the center of the medina, the "room", if one can even call it that, is massive with plenty of space. And for the price, it is unbeatable!
The rooms are clean, the bathroom is really nice, and the staff are incredibly kind. They have extra blankets for warmth, AC units, and plenty of couches.
I think it was the best riad in Morocco we’ve been! beautiful place near the center of Medina, very clean. lovely, helpful and very welcoming people working here - we appreciated your service! we loved our stay in Riad Letchina. if we ever come back to Fes, we definitely will stay in this place. I wish you guys all the best and a lot of guests! you deserve it! :)
We were told that Riad Fes Maya was built by a pasha; it's the most sumptuous hotel I've ever stayed in. Tile, carved plaster and wood everywhere. The bedroom was large and comfortable. Breakfast on the roof in a glass room with a wonderful view.
Traditional architecture with beautiful interior design that showcase Morocco style architecture. Good breakfast and service with a smile. Great location within Medina of Fes with many good eateries around.
everything. this is one of the best hotels I have stayed at during a very long traveling life. a must for anyone going to Fez. beautiful architecture and decor, helpful staff, and great food!!
we moved to this hotel for the pool! Most other hotels with pools in Fes seemed overpriced. this is a great location for getting around the Medina in Fes and going to all the good spots.
**Chef's kisses** Hands down, this is one of the best hostels I stayed at in Morocco. The host is one of the friendliest, professional hosts I met. I highly recommend it.
The hotel is perfectly located for exploring the medina and all parts of Fez. It is superbly managed by Samira and team who are very professional and friendly.
