Recommend staying in larger hotels. Not easily walkable due to safety concerns and aggressive begging/selling everywhere. We became very ill after eating at two large hotels. Ensure use of only sealed water, even for personal care. Would plan for short stays in the capital, have transportation and activities preplanned. Air quality is very bad due to constant burning of fields. Three of four people in our group were robbed the first day they ventured out to the market nearby. Safety limited ability to explore the area. Traffic is horrible. Bring candy or school supplies if venturing into the countryside, and bring your generous heart, as a little goes very far here.

This is not a wealthy 1st world city, as long as you are happy with that, you will enjoy it.
There is a lot of old culture here, some local, and lots mainly from Colonial times.
Taxis....plenty, but negotiate the price first or you may regret it !. The city is very crowded, so it gets gridlocked easily.
Food...generally street food and smaller restaurants are very cheap, the local rums are to die for, and there are too many to ever try them all.
Bring Lomatil...this is a must.

The price is really reasonable and people and food are nice.
The price is really reasonable and people and food are nice. Traffic and air condition are awful. It was my first visit to Africa so being there itself was really unusually nice but I think people like clean freaks might hate this city :)

Busy city but there’s not loads to do, a few days is perfect I stayed too long. Restaurants on the other hand were incredible. You do get hassled by people trying to make you buy things but if you’re polite but firm they will leave you alone after they’ve told you everything. It’s a fun place to experience a different market culture but as always beware of pickpockets

Tana shows the (great) poverty of the many, and the wealth...
Tana shows the (great) poverty of the many, and the wealth of the very few. Everywhere you go, the people try to make a living on the street, with little stalls or just a blanket, selling literally everything. Trips of about 5-6 km may take you well over two hours by car/taxi. Walking is not an alternative. The sheer amount of people on the streets during the day is just mind boggling.
Such a wonderful find! Art everywhere, and etherything is done with the upmost taste and care. The Best Boutique Suites in Madagascar? Wonderful restaurant downstairs. Gourmet dinners, served at a high level Phenomenal personal care from the entire staff. . The head waiter even walked me 700 meters to a store to help me find a bottle of rum! Lovely views of the city. They arranged our taxi transport which was very helpful. Highly recommended.
Staff was very friendly, and the lead staff member spoke English. There is a nice Korean BBQ restaurant right around the corner, so you needn't pay for a taxi to have a delicious lunch/dinner.
Nice sturdy screen on the window, so no worries of mosquitos. WIFI was reliable and fast. Sheets, while stained, were well cleaned.
This hotel is a good option for the price, compared to others in Tana.
They honored the Genius Booking.com discount.
It took us 2+ hrs to clear immigration, luggage, customs, and Covid at the Ivato airport…but the hotel shuttle bus was still there waiting for us when we finally made it outside! The hotel is close to the airport which was great after a very long journey to Madagascar. Hotel facilities are quite nice. There is a restaurant on property and breakfast was included in our stay.
I chose this hotel as the breakfast was included in the rate. Breakfast was excellent. Very friendly staff. Room and facilities very clean. Very comfortable bed, no technical issues what-so-ever. Great swimming-pool and garden. The bonus was the adjacent Spa, also run by IBIS, with a well-equipped Gym, Sauna, and Hammam. Free-of-charge for Hotel guests.
It's one of the best hostel in Madagascar, with a very welcoming, professional and helpful staff's team and a great manager. It's very central, great relaxing atmosphere and the beautiful setting. I enjoyed to be there as I've stayed there before too. Big room and comfy bed with a hot and powerful shower. Thanks to the manager and her team.
open air, well decorated with fossils and carvings and plants, picturesque hotel with 2 open patios in the upper level and enclosed restaurant. Staff was incredibly helpful (arranged a driver for round trip to Lemur Park, over an hour each way) and very attentive. Top floor rooms are probably the best: duplex with staircase and skylight
La Ribaudière is always so amazing! This is my third time over the last 7 years to visit Madagascar and stay in La Ribaudière. The staff is always very helpful, the food is always very good and the price is always right. Americans visiting Antananarivo, this is a must! They speak great english and are willing to arrange money exchange.
The food in the hotel restaurant was excellent. Rooms were spacious and uniquely decorated. The rooftop terrace (with pool and bar) provided a welcome retreat (what a pity that it only opens at 11 AM). A wonderful curio shop and an ATM are both conveniently located opposite the hotel, and the airport is a five-minute drive away.
we loved everything here! what a lovely place to stay in Tana…like an oasis of calm in a busy city. staff all incredibly helpful, it felt like our home in Madagascar. very clean and beautiful decor. amazing breakfast. we were especially grateful for their help arranging transfers and the cotisse bus.
We very much enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The price is decent. It has the charm of bed and breakfast like making us feel staying in a home as opposed to grand hotels. The personel is nice and helpful. The location has a spendid view to the town, and it is convenient.
brand new hotel (march 2023): room very clean, good restaurant
near the main road, but still very quiet. close to airport
just opposite La Terrasse de Tydouce: the best zebu filet we had in all of Mada -and try the mouse aux chocolat...
The appartment is well situated , not far from town. we really appreciate the secure location which is an essential criteria when choosing a holiday house in Madagascar.
The owner is very helpful and always ready to help , anytime.
Beautiful new hotel. Stylishly decorated & extremely spacious rooms. Great location near the airport with free transfers & local bus stop just outside. Would definitely recommend! They even held our luggage while we were traveling.
The interior of the hotel was very nice and the staff was kind. Having a private bathroom and a view out my window was great. I liked that I didn't have to leave to hotel to get food and that they sell bottles of water there too.
This is the most luxurious hotel in Antananarivo and probably also in Madagascar.
The pool was stunning, the restaurant had amazing food and the prices are reasonable.
the rooms are very comfortable and very clean.
The hotel and the Service is amazing. However the windows are not good and it sounds like they are open because there is no sound isolation and the Hotel is in general ridcolously expensive for Madagascar.
Nice hotel in the center with great restaurant and view on the the rooftop terrace. Was upgraded from the premium studio to the apartment which was very nice.
