Recommend staying in larger hotels. Not easily walkable due to safety concerns and aggressive begging/selling everywhere. We became very ill after eating at two large hotels. Ensure use of only sealed water, even for personal care. Would plan for short stays in the capital, have transportation and activities preplanned. Air quality is very bad due to constant burning of fields. Three of four people in our group were robbed the first day they ventured out to the market nearby. Safety limited ability to explore the area. Traffic is horrible. Bring candy or school supplies if venturing into the countryside, and bring your generous heart, as a little goes very far here.

This is not a wealthy 1st world city, as long as you are happy with that, you will enjoy it.
There is a lot of old culture here, some local, and lots mainly from Colonial times.
Taxis....plenty, but negotiate the price first or you may regret it !. The city is very crowded, so it gets gridlocked easily.
Food...generally street food and smaller restaurants are very cheap, the local rums are to die for, and there are too many to ever try them all.
Bring Lomatil...this is a must.

The price is really reasonable and people and food are nice. Traffic and air condition are awful. It was my first visit to Africa so being there itself was really unusually nice but I think people like clean freaks might hate this city :)

Busy city but there’s not loads to do, a few days is perfect I stayed too long. Restaurants on the other hand were incredible. You do get hassled by people trying to make you buy things but if you’re polite but firm they will leave you alone after they’ve told you everything. It’s a fun place to experience a different market culture but as always beware of pickpockets

Tana shows the (great) poverty of the many, and the wealth...
Tana shows the (great) poverty of the many, and the wealth of the very few. Everywhere you go, the people try to make a living on the street, with little stalls or just a blanket, selling literally everything. Trips of about 5-6 km may take you well over two hours by car/taxi. Walking is not an alternative. The sheer amount of people on the streets during the day is just mind boggling.
Everyone is friendly. They accept visa credit cards for payment. The restaurant has good food. The hotel and restaurant are very clean. The rooms are large with a big bed that was very comfy. The rooms have air-condition and a fan. There is an elevator. Across the street is an ATM. They have parking in front of the hotel. We are planning on staying there again at the end of the trip. It is a very nice clean and safe place to stay near the airport.
Such a wonderful find! Art everywhere, and etherything is done with the upmost taste and care. The Best Boutique Suites in Madagascar? Wonderful restaurant downstairs. Gourmet dinners, served at a high level Phenomenal personal care from the entire staff. . The head waiter even walked me 700 meters to a store to help me find a bottle of rum! Lovely views of the city. They arranged our taxi transport which was very helpful. Highly recommended.
I chose this hotel as the breakfast was included in the rate. Breakfast was excellent. Very friendly staff. Room and facilities very clean. Very comfortable bed, no technical issues what-so-ever. Great swimming-pool and garden. The bonus was the adjacent Spa, also run by IBIS, with a well-equipped Gym, Sauna, and Hammam. Free-of-charge for Hotel guests.
I stayed here at the start of my Madagascar trip and it could not have been a better welcome.
The airport pickup from the hotel worked perfect, the room was clean and comfy, and the staff very nice and even speaking English.
throughout the day you have drinking water, tea and coffee in the kitchen and the nice maid prepares breakfast everyday!
It's one of the best hostel in Madagascar, with a very welcoming, professional and helpful staff's team and a great manager. It's very central, great relaxing atmosphere and the beautiful setting. I enjoyed to be there as I've stayed there before too. Big room and comfy bed with a hot and powerful shower. Thanks to the manager and her team.
The heated swimming pool was a must, especially considering the winter time; it was really useful to take away the tiredness of the long trip to Antananarivo. The room was cosy and elegant and comfortable with lots of facilities. The hotel is located close to many commercial and service facilities.
This hotel is clean, quiet, and close enough to the airport. The staff are kind and friendly. There is security at night. The best part of this hotel is the restaurant located on the first floor, which has great food. Definitely recommend to my friends and family to stay here is they are in Tana.
- Great Communication
- Professional Service
- Caring staff, ensuring we are safe
- Help of hotel staff to arrange airport shuttle, get contact to local guide Mr. Christian (we did a great trip to rain forrest and lemur island) and general guidance in Tana
- Good breakfast
- Perfect Massage
The proximity to the market and some of the main attractions in Antananarivo made this guest house very convenient. The staff did everything they could to accommodate me on my stay--such nice people! One night I ate dinner at this guest house and the dinner was amazing!
Nice place to end our trip to Madagascar. Rooms large and comfortable, good food in restaurant and close to the airport (transfer included).
The massages at the spa were also really good. Much better than the standard you get at a lot of spas.
- Close to independence Avenue
- Nice roof top
- Value for money
- Good breakfast
- Close to Independence Avenue
- Lady Receptionist sweet - offered me free hot water for coffee
- breakfast (hot drink, egg, cake, bread, butter & jam)
The ambiance created by the massive collection of antiques is truly unique. The fact that the collection was created by buying antiques from locals bringing their pieces to the hotel since 1960, adds to the charm.
close to Restaurants, clean and modern, good water pressure with hot water. had a room safe and felt safe overall. Mattress was also comfy (which cannot be taken for granted in Madagascar).
Well appointed room. Great place to relax and stay in bed all day. 2 restaurants in the hotel. Grocery store short walk away. Great breakfast buffet... Way too many options.
Awesome place, very good service, the room were nice, great view, the spa access incredible. The bakery of the hotel was delicious. Highly recommended!
