At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.

Having spent some time in Cancun, (zona hotelera) before visiting playa del Carmen, I think I would definitely prefer the beaches in Cancun. Playa del Carmen had a lot of seaweed and I found that unpleasant. The sea was alright, the facilities we didn't use because our accommodation was right in front of the beach.

This is a very bizzy touristic resort.

If you want to go clubbing and drinking, this is the place to be.
If you want to find the real Mexican vibe, you need to go and search further away to Valladolid and Merida.

Playa del Carmen has great weather and great food, but it is crazy expensive. It's been a few years since my last trip to Mexico, but beers for 20-30 Pesos are long gone. Now it is more like 65-95. A bad margarita was 110 pesos and a good one was 190 or more. Feeding my family of 3 cost well over $100/day, and that's eating only 2 meals. A two tank dive for a certified diver was $145. A one hour snorkeling tour for 3 was $210. Also, it's full of hawkers and vendors and scams (the tip is often added to your bill at a restaurant and they try to hide that from you). Playa del Carmen had none of feel that Zijhuataneo did in 10 years ago. It's not a community. It's a place to go for tourists (from Mexico, the US, and Europe) to enjoy the beach and weather and for Mexicans to go to extract money from tourists.

Playa del Carmen had some beautiful areas.
Playa del Carmen had some beautiful areas. But also some very poor areas. The excaret parks are amazing. The Playacar beach was awesome. The people there are awfully pushy and will rip you off. If you aren’t careful. The transportation system is amazing.

Went into town one afternoon and walked 5th Avenue a few hours. Lots of shops and eat/drink places. Beach in town was unimpressive. Many street vendors and hawkers, not too bothersome. Took a cab each way, about $20 plus tip. Some small, cozy hotels right in the midst of things if you wanted to get the real feel of the town, but we liked the resort.

Don’t go for the beaches. Lots of seaweed and very narrow.
Don’t go for the beaches. Lots of seaweed and very narrow. We found 5th Ave to be a typical tourist trap. Overpriced restaurants and souvenirs. You’ll find better food and a cheaper price a block or two away.

A lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings, very tranquil despite being close to the centre of Playa Del Carmen ( 5th Ave). Loads of bars & restaurants close by with good food.
We had half board, the food was delicious with many Mayan specialities & we didn’t have to queue for food unlike many of the much larger hotels with all inclusive deals. The staff were very attentive & friendly & also helped us organise a taxi to the airport within minutes when our prepaid Booking.com arranged transfer didn’t turn up!
The location was perfect. it was right on the beach and they provided beach chairs for free. Best value in town. We knew there wouldnt be parking so we paid for a spot at a lot a few blocks away. The night before our flight we changed to street parking which is free after 10pm. Playa Del Mar was a much better place to stay than Cancun. It was safe, near a lot of neat shops, plenty of evening entertainment/dance clubs, authentic restaurants - mexican, thai, japanese, all within walking distance.
Location is excellent right on 5th Avenue. Like an oasis amongst the chaos. The hotel is beautiful. The staff were lovely. Cleaners left little extra touches like a Happy New Year sign as we were there for 31st Dec. I was very worried about the noise from 5th Ave so I requested a room facing the garden. I can only recommend the hotel based on this experience as the noise wasn’t bad at all. Not sure how it would be if you had a room facing the street though.
We had a nice stay over New Years Eve. Location is great for anyone looking to bar hop, shop, or people watch on 5th ave. The front staff was very nice and the parking lot was secure. Cute coffee shop downstairs was perfect for breakfast and beds were super comfortable! We were given a hotel on the 2nd floor which opened up to the pool which was nice. I've ready many reviews about the noise from restaurants/bars downstairs, but it didn't bother us at all.
The room was very spacious and clean and the hotel is located in the best possible location of Playa Del Carmen (if you wanna be directly in the center). I also didn't have any problems with noise coming from the streets (as other people stated), but that might depend on the room. WiFi was working most of the time as well. Plus this is probably one of the most budget-friendly hotels around. Hostels are not much cheaper and a lot less comfortable.
This small hotel in Playa del Carmen offers something a lot of other hotels do not offer: an atmosphere !
We enjoyed a bungalow on the beach (though without a view to the ocean).
The bar was a bit empty in the evening due to some wind ... Great, we had it all for ourselves with a splendid view on the ocean.
The restaurant offers 2 menus + buffet + special choices for children every evening. Fine cooking that we enjoyed 2 nights.
Hotel is located in a nice and quiet area at the end of 5th Avenue (the main tourist strip that runs through Playa Del Carmen). It has a cool roof top with a cafe (best guacamole I've had in Mexico so far), sun beds and a pool. Great spot to relax and drink some beers (BYO, they don't sell alcohol). The room was spacious but very basic (pretty much a concrete box). Amazing shower pressure. Very helpful staff.
we really enjoy the area and also the wonderful facilities and couple who own the property. Serafim is very helpful as is his wife Itzel. Feels like casa (home). We highly recommend staying here for a relaxing and fun stay in Playa Del Carmen. A special thanks for their rides to and from Cancun. That really starts and ends the trip in the best way. Looking forward to returning to the Gem.
This hotel is on 30st in playa del carmen. This is the real Mexico. There are excellent restaurants and shops all with in walking distance, and better as well as cheaper. Than on 5th Ave. You are not harassed to buy things here. It has close access to the highway which makes it easy to get to dive sites. It is very good value for the money. Breakfast is also included in the price.
Extremely good customer service, Receptionist Rogelio is the best!!! He showed us around, gave us the best service ever. The hotel bartender Pavel and his assistant Ana are extremely friendly, the hotel bar is as lit as the clubs. This will forever be the hotel to go to when visiting cancun and it's only because of the customer service we received from Roge, Pavel and Anna !! ❤️
This hotel is in a great location for going out in Playa Del Carmen. Very friendly service with welcome drink during check in. They have a cool snack bar where you can get burgers and they have a really great restaurant. I had a three course dinner with wine which was included in the price. This place therefore offers exceptional value for money!
The best hotel I stayed in Playa del Carmen. Very comfortable beds, good working A/C. And veryyyy helpful employees!!!! Also very safe and close to the beach (8 min walk?) and to all shops and cafe’s (1 min walk) but at the same time quiet.
Still one of the best hotels in Playa del Carmen. Perfect rooftop with all amenities, good studio or one bedroom rooms, friendly and efficient staff. After staying there for about 10 times I still keep coming back
This is a lovely small hotel right on the beachfront. Very welcoming, family friendly with sun loungers on the beach. Great staff, always helpful and have time to stop for a chat and give you advice.
The facilities were very clean. The attention was excellent and the hotel is in one of the best locations in Playa del Carmen. We stayed there again a week later. I highly recommended it.
Amazing breakfast, nice and really helpful staff. We could choose among activities and tours as well. The hotel is located at the best part of Playa del Carmen with beach front.
