Kota Kinabalu (KK) is the capital of the East Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. It features white-sand beaches, tropical rainforests and the outer lying coral reefs and islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) Marine Park, a haven for scuba divers.
Occupied by the Japanese and heavily bombed during World War II by the British, some remnants of this colonial era remain in the Atkinson Clock Tower and Signal Hill Observatory, with its sweeping view of the coast.
Tanjung Arn is KK’s most popular public beach and secluded northern beaches like Karambunai and Dalit have resorts dotted along the coast.
Kota Kinabalu Harbour hosts international cruise ships and the KK Waterfront is a popular place with many bars. The KK Handicraft Market is your chance to grab a nice souvenir to take home.
Mount Kinabalu is Malaysia’s highest mountain at 4,101 metres. This highly important ecological region contains rare fauna and flora and makes a good day trip from the capital.
A variety of hotels on Booking.com are centred around Kota Kinabalu International Airport, the city centre and islands.

The little city or small town is not special at all, there is no charm to it really and I would not visit it for the town itself. However, it is a town where the airport is so you have to go through it. It is very convenient to access the Jesselton pier to take the boats to the island and to go to the markets, which are not really that special. They are OK. I have seen many great markets throughout Asia.

we stayed in 4 different hotels for 3-4 nights.
we stayed in 4 different hotels for 3-4 nights. All good in different ways.
Sea food was super and other meals good,(some too spicy for us but we learnt to ask for "not too spicy")
Taxi transport was cheap and easy. Ferry boat transfers were more difficult, Ask Island Hotels for their ferry times BEFORE you book return flights as free ferries only go at selective times. We had to book a private ferry so we could get to the airport for a 13.00 flight. (cost £48)
Loved the area but we were on the wrong coast for easy access to oranotang monkeys . Flights across were too expensive for us to make the trip!

Kota Kinabalu is a fabulous place to visit for the amazing food, from budget level to fine dining but especially the local and other Asian cuisine. The Filipino Market was exceptional and we left will full cases. Transport around the centre is easy by walking or Grab. The Island trips looked superb but not at our age unfortunately considering the very hot afternoons. Next year we'll go to Mount Kinabalu area but too far on a short visit. The people were invariably charming.

I saw the inside and outside of KK International airport 5 times, and travelled to and from Ibis Styles Inanam hotel by taxi twice but did not visit any "attractions" in KK. The panoramic view westward over KK skyline from my 1-night stays in 10th and 11th floor rooms was unremarkable.
The only place of interest I noted was beside the highway heading eastwards out of town to the hotel: a cemetery covering 3 or 4 low hills densely packed with multicoloured graves and shrines: a miniature city of departed souls.

Visit to kundasang , Kita Kinabalu park , the view was excellent , majestic view of the mountain , fresh air , the road to the kk.mountain is very good and I drive there with my family .the people there were friendly and the homestay was cheap and near the town , overall it's was excellent trip , me and family will definitely come again
Everything is brand new, very nice view, staff sent detailed instructions to find the hotel. I appreciated thoughtful touches like a travel adapter in one of the plugs, water and coffee provided, kettle. A lot of great stuff nearby - restaurants, bars, mall, 711, but very quiet for sleeping.
Hot water shower, cold a/c, nice ceiling fan, comfy beds. A desk. Space to store luggage and hang some things.
Really a very nice hotel, I extended my stay.
Prime location, literally in the heart of city center where you can get food just by few minutes of walking distance. Infront of hotel you have groceries store, 2-3 minutes away you will get supermarket. Suria shopping mall, waterfront seafood market just 5-10 minutes walk. Super convenient. Room was clean, big window in the room just add extra points while having coffee in the morning and starring at the view outside.
The location is at the city center, near to the airport and you can find a lot of famous food & beverages outlets within walking distance. The Hotel allowed us to store our luggage after check-out as we are taking a night flight back to hometown. The Hotel does not have a lift. However, a male staff is polite and kind and helped us to carry down our heavy luggage from the reception which is located at the 1st floor.
absolutely terrible hotel. the pictures are not accurate. at all. dirty room. uncomfortable bed. described as brand new hotel but looked like it hasn’t been painted in years. no breakfast provided and no restaurants near by. not sure what guests are expected to do. thankful we only booked to stay 1 night as it was close to the airport and we had a transfer out.
It was Last minute honeymoon for us.. And we can't find any 5 star room available on the same day.. Suddenly saw this The seraya Hotel and the location is perfect for leisure around gaya Street.. The staff set up honeymoon deco for us upon husband request, and it was very cute.. Haha. The staff was friendly too. They are Very2x helpful. TQ Dominic & team
- The staff very nice feel like stay in 5 star hotel
- The bed so tidy and comfortable like 5 star hotel
- The Bedroom and bathroom very clean
- The hostel very safe
- Have Lift
- Variety Muslim food and convenience store just below the hostel
- In front of shopping mall Imago
- Very Near to the beach@Filipino market just 5@10 min by walking
The family room size. It is one of the biggest family rooms I have ever book, worth the price. Very near to Jesselton Point Jetty, about 250m that I dont have to bring my car to the jetty. Strategic location to access to Universiti Malaysia Sabah, the street markets and got many of the facilities around the hotel area
A fantastic chain hotel. Well located in the city center, walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and massages. A spacious room with a peaceful and soothing ambiance.
Outstanding full breakfast that caters to the demands of people from all ethnicities. Staff that is professional, helpful, and friendly.
Shangrila Tanjung Aru is the best 5 Star Hotel in Sabah. if you want to get the sea vibes u can come here very near to KK city. The place is very relaxing and beautiful. All is good! Facilities 5 Star! The themewaterpark was very nice!! My family and I really enjoyed our stay here.
The personal in the hotel are very nice and friendly. Good location in the city center and walk distance to various restaurants, shopping mall and Jesselton Point ferry terminal. Every day two big bottles of drinking water free in the room.
The hotel and facilities are what I expect from the Hilton. Room was comfortable and clean. The breakfast was extensive although it is surprising that there was no local in-season fruit offered. The pool on the top floor was great.
The team at CJ Residence were really helpful. But the best bit was the room. Totally 5 star hotel standard. The bed was so comfy. Sad it was just one night. Great location. One street away from the water and near all facilities.
