It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride.
There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

We loved Oamaru.
We loved Oamaru. It was a beautiful little town with stunning architecture and things to do. We enjoyed the steam punk HQ and the museums available to celebrate the towns heritage.
Plenty of cafes and restaurants available and good quality food/ beverages.

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore.
The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀

This is a hidden gem of a town with unique stone architecture and history. I am biased because I worked here for two months years ago. Be sure to visit the garden and use the pool facilities if you have the time. And to top it off it is close to the Moreike Boulders... a must see.
We were delighted when we stepped into the room. It was very, very nice. Everything was well maintained and very clean. The beds were comfortable. There were 3 extra pillows, extra blanket, iron and ironing board, lots of hangers, hair dryer and the kitchen was well stocked with plates, cups, pans etc. There was a lot of room for our family of 4 adults. The motel staff / owner was very friendly and very accommodating. We would definitely stay there again the next time we are in Oamaru.
Clean room, it had everything we needed :) kitchen is small but well equipped and bathroom is nice too. There was a functioning new heater and beds were comfy. I especially liked that we could move the double bed, to create a massive triple bed so that our baby doesn't fall off her bed :D (of course, we moved everything back to original position when leaving). It is walking distance to town (even though we drove). Oamaru is great <3
The layout was perfect for our family with separate bedroom and living room sleeping area. Easy and friendly check in. Slept great on comfortable bed. While nothing jumps out about the motel it delivered more than expected! Also Oamuru turned out to be the hidden gem of our trip! Super interesting town!
The location of this hotel was perfect. It was a cozy stay with all the amenities. Breakfast is a continental affair. so if you need eggs and meat, you'll need another option. But there were crumpets, bagels, great bread, yogurt, fruit, cereal, etc. We had more than enough to get us through until dinner!
Love these old Hotels, but was a bit apprehensive when we arrived, in the midst of a hot summer, as there's no Air Con.
In saying that, the window & breeze was fine and we had a great nights sleep - the beds were super comfy
Also a great spot for a leisurely walk around ot the Blue Penguin colony.
Perfect location. Handy to everything as long as you have transport. Nice room. We had a view of the hill behind Oamaru so the afternoon sun streamed in keeping it warm during the day. VERY good price for a holiday weekend. We wanted to come back but it was booked out. Highly recommend this motel.
I loved staying at Oamaru Backpackers. My room was very cozy and comfy, the kitchen and the living room were so nice and bright with everything you need to cook and to relax. Very nice view. So far one of the best hostel I've been to since I'm in NZ last year. Sadly I only stayed one night.
- The Checkin was very easy and flexible due to the key locker box.
- The staff was very fast in their replies via booking-chat.
- The Accomodation is near to the bus stop and in walking distance to alle POI's of Oamaru.
Great location at end of town, close to Victorian Precinct, Steampunk & walking distance to Little Blue Penguin exhibit. Best value for money in Oamaru. Bed very comfortable, kitchen & bathrooms relatively clean.
Such a lovely Backpackers - with the chic and options for staying in motel-like rooms as well. Great location near to the heritage end of Oamaru, the Sunday market and the beach. Handy if you have a car though.
We own 2 rentals in Oamaru. Purpose of visit was to carry out maintenance and to catch up with people I know. The motel was very close to both properties an easy walk to town and reasonable in cost.
Such a peaceful retreat after two weeks of hotel after hotel! We wish we'd been able to stay longer to unwind and to explore the farm and chapel and to learn more about the history of the place!
Really love this place, highly recommend to anyone who plan to visit Oamaru and stay for one night or more. You will definitely love it!
It worth the money you pay for.
