Really interesting city with great options for visiting a number of natural and historical sites: 2.5 hours to Chavin de Huantar, 2 hours to glaciers and mountain lakes. The city is teeming with travel operators to take you there - there are also colectivos at your own risk. Lots of restaurants of various cuisines, including both tourist-focused places and more local ones. We even found some good vegetarian options - especially at Paulino's Indian and Casa de Zarela Thai.

Like Cusco and Lima, it was a crowded city of aggressive drivers constantly honking and spewing exhaust. Prices were higher than Cusco with less souvenir shopping. Maybe choose a place a little outside the town or another town that is closer to most of the day trips--it'll save u bus time too.

Huaraz is a great location as a base for mountaineering and hiking. At an altitude of 3000m you can retain your acclimatization there. There is a good supermarket Trujillo where you can get most food for the mountains, good restaurants with nice artisanal beer, stores with basic hiking equipment and gas. The town is chaotic but in a nice kind of way and seems to be safe.

A great base for trips out to the surrounding mountains.
A great base for trips out to the surrounding mountains. Lots of great trekking with stunning views and such a different range of scenery. Snow and ice with glaciers, or big crevasse strewn hills, or stunning big valleys with views over Huaraz. Lots of outdoor shops, lots of good places to eat and doesn't feel at all touristy.

Not really a nice city.
Not really a nice city. There is the Museum in the center of the city worth seing, with a garden of (real) Chavin stones.
Food is terrible. Almost all restaurants, expensive or unexpensive, only serve fried stuff with fried potatoes and eventually a sallad that I would not dare to eat. Alternatives are pizzas and pastas. But one does not travell up to the mountains to eat such kind of commercial food and so heavy.
We took a private car for a city tour at 5 p.m. He took us to various places. Interesting. We asked him if there was something to do in the evenings, like a cinema or a theater, and he said there was nothing going on like that in Huaraz.
It is a place to stop for starting a several days trip mounaineering or mountain walks, like to the mountains, or in our case we planned a 2 days trip to Chavin de Huantar (archeaology and nature).
People in Huaraz are generally speaking quite hostile, even locals to each other, prices are higher than in Lima (apparently there is much money circulating as the result of all the the mines around), service in restaurants and cafes is quite bad. What is offered, is in most cases is not what they really have once you start to order. If you have to go to Huaraz for starting your trip to the mountains or elsewhere, take it relaxed, stay cool, don`t expect too much and you will notice some little cool details here and there.
Definitely the best spot in Huaraz!
The hostel is more like a guest house. Super clean and quit with a nice kitchen and great balcony/ dining/ hangout area.
There is always tea and coffee available. Breakfast is simple but good. fruit, coffee, cheese/ egg and fresh rolls with jam.
Wifi is strong, I spent some days working here.
Ana is honestly one of the nicest owners you will come across. She packed me a breakfast bag when I went hiking at 6:30 am and was kind enough to offer me my room for a late checkout.
We arrived terribly late in the night due to a bus delay of several hours. However, we were still able to check in at 2 am (once we had figured out the entrance was on the side of the building!).
Our suite was spacious, quite comfortable and remarkably cheap.
The hotel is located in the center of Huaraz, three blocks from the biggest city square (Plaza de Armas), with several restaurants nearby. It also has a terrace on the third floor from where you have a nice view of the Cordillera Blanca.
Excellent location just outside of Huaraz. Quiet and peaceful, but still easy to access. Room was quiet and comfortable. Really hot showers which was a huge plus. Free reign of the kitchen which was great, able to cook meals since there isn’t much around in regards to eating our (which we thought was a huge plus!). Eva, the host, is super sweet and very helpful. Came and met us when our bus got in very very late to help us find the house. Overall a great stay, could not recommend more.
The hosts are great. The location is great and we had a very nice time. We can to Huaraz to hike in the area and we're glad that we picked this place. From the Lazy Dog, we could go out walking to different trails. Otherwise, everything requires a car ride on very poor and bumpy roads. Besides the good location, it was a pleasure to know the hosts and meet other guests. It's a remote location so not everything works like it would in a city, but overall it was very nice.
-staff was awesome. Helped us with everything we needed and was very friendly. The hotel is very good overall, but that was the best part.
We asked for Benji's help so many times for different stuff and every time he went out of his way to help us. Very nice guy.
He will help you book tours and find the best options for what you need. I recommend you book with them.
-rooms are very big and Comfortable. Feels very new as well.
-Beds were comfortable.
The value for money is awesome! I think I did not stay anywhere in Peru as cheap and good. The rooms are only with three people and you have an en suite bathroom. Both the room and the bathroom are very clean. The breakfast is good and changes everyday. The staff is also very nice and the prices for the tours I booked were even cheaper than in other places around Huaraz.
It was a very good hostel. The breakfast was delicious, and the cleanliness and service were excellent. The host Ronald and his family are kind and helpful whenever you need anything. There are shops nearby, so it's not inconvenient at all. Staying at this hostel made me fall in love with Huaraz. I would like to return to this place and recommend it to others as well.
The family is super friendly and welcoming. They are very helpful and arrange tours for you if that's what you desire. There's also the oportunity to eat there - for a small additional fee e.g. 10 soles for a breakfast (regular price for Northern Peru).
I felt like being part of their family :)
Stefan and Tatiana were very helpful in answering any of my questions about hikes etc and also in terms of taking me down to get groceries and supplies whenever I needed them. They also helped me find the best transport from the lodge and Huaraz to other destinations.
Really good value and good location within easy walking distance of the centre of Huaraz. Showers were almost always hot and the wifi is excellent. Ivan organises day trips and multi-day treks which were the best prices we could find in town.
There's nothing to complain about the room and hotel itself, but what makes this place really awesome is the host Carlos. He's not only super helpful with organizing tours at the last minute, but also just a great and warm hearted person.
The view of the Andes. Great location and super friendly staff. Not far from bars and markets. Good breakfast. Also, a clean kitchen for guest to use. Definitely staying here on my next trip to huaraz
Owner super helpful and knowledgable with planning your stay in Huaraz. The rest of the staff are very nice and helpful as well. Hostel is very sociable and meeting other travelers is easy and fun.
Best hostel in Huaraz for planning activities in the mountains. They set you up w wonderful guides and the best prices too. Owner is wonderful, helpful and flexible. Breakfeast is great
This is a great place to stay in Huaraz. The staff is very kind and helpful, the rooms are spotless and peaceful, and it is a great value. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Huaraz
The best accomodatiton we had in Peru so far! Jacky is super attendive, helps with everything you need. Super comfy apartment, hot shower and awesome terrace!
