Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.
Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.
Interesting town. Nice shops and a wide variety of restaurants.
It is a bit hilly, which could be an issue for some visitors - but taxis and buses are available.
Buses to other destinations are available and fun to use.

Beautiful garden city with well kept gardens and trees...
Beautiful garden city with well kept gardens and trees everywhere. Incredible array of restaurants and bars, which were well priced and didn't disappoint. Weather was great, averaging around 20 deg C during our stay creeping up to 24 deg C on some days, but low humidity. Quite windy some days but we ate breakfast outside every day. It is extremely hilly though, away from the promenade - so a reasonable degree of fitness and mobility needed to fully enjoy (or use plentiful local taxis and buses).
We also stayed just outside Funchal, with a hire car, the previous week. This gave us a chance to see more of the island, which is worth doing - plenty of half and full day tours from Funchal. You'll need some layers & waterproofs when heading up into the mountains, which rise up to 2,000m and have very different weather to Funchal! There were still plenty of things left for another time, even after a fortnight. We'll be back!

I've been to Funchal 4 times in the past year.
I've been to Funchal 4 times in the past year. Ive been to many places in Europe and Funchal is easily the best. I've normally stayed in hotels but took an apartment this time. Inspired. So much to do and see. The old town is absolutely remarkable. Dont know how many miles i walked, but I've come home fitter than i left

The cable car up to Monte is great.
The cable car up to Monte is great. Don't miss the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo near the harbour. We visited the botanical gardens and the Palheiro Gardens by bus. The buses are not very frequent so it's best to check the timetables. There are lots of good restaurants in the old town and by the cathedral. Be aware that museums are shut on Sunday and Monday.

The island of Madeira has many aspects to recommend it.
The island of Madeira has many aspects to recommend it. Funchal is a pleasant town as are many of the other villages and locations.
With much of Europe in danger of over tourism and often of a questionable kind, Madeira is noticeably avoided by the worst elements - stag and hen groups and others who impact upon the quiet enjoyment of people not part of their group.
As a cruise liner destination, plan trips and excursions on days that the liners are absent. 5000 people heading for the same place can be a challenge.

Just such a pretty island and the city itself has such a lot...
Just such a pretty island and the city itself has such a lot to look at and do. There are restaurants on every corner and often at very good prices so you are spoilt for choice. We walked everywhere but we did get a bus up to the Botanic Gardens. The only thing to be aware of is the cruise liners, one day we had 3 of the ugly mammoths in the harbour with about 10000 extra people crowding the town. It's worth checking that there are cruise-ship free days while you are there.
We missed our connection flight and arrived to the hotel in the middle of the night. Despite the time, Nuno welcomed us with a smile and very patient explanations and made the start of our trip in Madeira very pleasant. Also the rest of the staff was very nice, attentive and helpful. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The hotel's garden is gorgeous and has a nice panoramic view of the sea and was the perfect place for breakfast. Breakfast was excellent with large variety. It is highly recommended.
This hotel really was the perfect break away for myself and my mother, lots of really lovely restaurants and bars close by, and a short walk/bus ride away from the Old Town. The view of the sea and pool from our balcony was magnificent, sunsets were very special. There were great options for breakfast and staff were friendly. Loved the saltwater pool and lots of areas to sunbathe. It was our first time in Madeira and we both said we would return and happily would stay at the Pestana Carlton again.
Wonderful apartment, everything here is perfect for a visit of both Funchal and Madeira.
Super-practical, clean, the incredible terrace and finally its perfect location.
A short walk distance to everything the old Funchal has to offer and nice base-camp for a wider island exploration.
Finally the host is extremely welcoming and he is always there if you need anything or jif you just need a tip on where to go to drink the best poncha :)
5++ stars
For my first trip to Madeira, this was a really good pick. The hotel is cosy, the staff are friendly and the room was a great size.
I was given 2 single beds when I would’ve preferred a double bed but apart from that I really enjoyed the stay.
The breakfast was freshly made in the morning and tasted great each day.
I booked a massage for my last day and was worth it.
I will recommend it to anyone going to Funchal.
The hotel and its facilities are great and very clean. We enjoyed our time in the outdoor and indoor pools and squash court. The room was clean and spacious and the location was great with many very good restaurants in short walking distance. The downtown area was a 15-20 min walk or a quick bus ride which stops right outside the hotel. We loved our time in Madeira and would consider coming back to stay at this hotel again.
The apartment was spacious, light and well equipped. The location was excellent being right next to the old town with its shops, restaurants and bars. The apartment was also very convenient for public transport and the pick up point for tours. The hosts were lovely and informative providing great bar and restaurant recommendations. We loved Madeira and would look to stay again if we returned.
Place is located in the centre of Funchal Old Town, we had the little flat on the last floor, with kitchen and balcony, where we could eat and drink coffee. In the kitchen u have all u need to prepare food, even a blender! We also have a view on the ocean, what is always nice. In the building was a washing machine and dryer. Staing in this house u can feel like in your own flat, not a hotel.
Extraordinary location. The very long, L-shaped, balcony which provided incredible views of the port, the park across the street, the city and the mountains. The huge (10 foot wide, floor to ceilling) windows in the living room and the bedroom. The honey cake provided by our hostess, which was the best we had ever had in Madeira. The high security building.
Everything, the room with an unexpected kitchen area, the balcony the great selection at breakfast, the pool, the outdoor area and the bar area.
Also the bus stop is right outside so only 10-15 minutes into central Funchal and a lot of the tours pick up from outside the hotel too.
When I return to Madeira I will definitely stay here again.
Sparkling clean, small boutique hotel in a quiet area. It is not a 5*, but all hotels in Madeira have inflated rankings, so we kind of expected it. The fact that it’s not in the old town is an advantage, because it is very quiet at night. Buses run regularly to the old town. Good selection for breakfast. We would happily stay again.
Really lovely and well designed apartment in an excellent location. Feels like you are in the heart of the Old Town but yet it's nice and quiet. We had been staying outside of Funchal and only stayed here on our final night in Madeira, we regret not spending more time here as the apartment was so nice and the location was perfect.
Location was great in a building nextdoor to Forum Madeira shopping center. Large (by Madeira standards) Pingo Doce supermarket was on the lower floor. Location was well connected to the airport and center of Funchal by bus. Apartment had included parking. Basic cooking equipment was there
Superb place with comfy rooms with sea view close to shops and local amenities. It is easily reachable by the airport shuttle bus or taxi/car and well equipped to relax and recover after your Madeira island hopping trips. Dinning in the half board restaurant is a must try in a lifetime.
The apartment has a good location in Funchal and it's very nice.
Close by there is a cenvenient public parking spot (4,50 EUR for 24h) and it is nice that you can use some of the services of the Hotel Madeira (which manages the apartment) that is very close (for example, the pool).
The hotel is super close to everything, including the marina and main street of Funchal. It's location is perfect, especially for first time visitors of Madeira. The staff is nice, helping the guests to have a great stay. The pool is fine, but a bit small.
Location is just perfect, in the middle of old town, very close to airport bus stop, few minutes walk from the Santa Maria street. Coffee was surprisingly better than in other bigger hotels in Madeira :)
Very modern, clean and comfortable. Good location for exploring Funchal. Providing that you don't want to hire a car it's a very good town centre hotel. Good breakfast.
