We were pleasantly surprised by Bloemfontein. It is clean and neat. The Botanical gardens are absolutely beautiful. Extremely well cared for - definitely worth a visit. Oliewenhuis art museum is free (R10 parking fee only) and lovely for a visit and a picnic in the grounds.
Nice restaurants; good malls; traffic not too bad at the time we visited.
I'd recommend Haru Sushi restaurant.
Tempe golf club at the Tempe Military Base (open to the public) was an unexpected find - cheap round of golf on a nice course.
Disappointed that the planetarium visitors centre doesn't seem to be open, most days of the week; it only opens for special viewings.
Naval Hill worth a visit - friendly ostriches and beautiful views.

I lived in Bloem for 9 years, it was great in the 90's.
I lived in Bloem for 9 years, it was great in the 90's.
Unfortunately, the city has deteriorated massively.
I would not go to Bloemfontein for leisure or tourism.
It is central to stop on the way to/from somewhere or if you have some work / business / family-event to attend to.
Great place to shoot a dystopic movie seen!

I love the city and especially the fabulous friends and family who live in Bloem - not exactly a holiday destination but defnitely the place to visit for cricket or rugby games.
Traveling around is easy and getting to Bloem is very easy on the highway

We spend half a day at the Boer War Museum, inside and all outside exhibits -it is well worth seeing! It gave us not only a much better understanding about cause for the war, the battle actions and the political aims of all parties involved, but also the extreme suffering of non-combatant population mainly women and children!
A great deal of care and attention has gone into the room about the concentration camps.
At the exit of the museum’s building is a light room with some comfy sofas inviting you to rest your legs and browse the different books about the Boer War.
After that tough but necessary topic relax with a drink from the coffee shop just across the lawn… it has excellent coffee!

I grew up and went to boarding school in Bloemfontein.
I grew up and went to boarding school in Bloemfontein. The city has deteriorated under the ANC government. Bloemfontein municipality I believe is amongst the many South African municipalities that are now bankrupt. As a result the maintenance of the city is poor and neglected. Many roads need repairs as the tar has warn away down to the gravel beneath. Street light can be intermittent and traffic lights are also an issue as some work and many do not. It is quite ridiculous, but street names on the curbs have been painted over in black paint and have adverts for local businesses on them. Street name signs are now missing generally. The suburbs where the whites live are generally still in a reasonable condition. This is the new South Africa under the ANC government and it is a disaster. As far as the CBD of Bloemfontein is concerned, it must be avoided as it is dangerous. It used to be a first world area with major shops, businesses, offices, cinemas etc. I went through it once and will never go there again. Remember, I grew up there and knew it very well.

Often use Bloemfontein as a stopover. Pleasant surprise to find this guesthouse! Rooms exceptionally clean, towels and bedding similar to a four star hotel, lovely breakfast, secure parking, good location and all at a very reasonable price! Modern finishes with electrical points for phone chargers in the headboards (no crawling behind cupboards and fridges to get your phone charged!) Room was cozy and comfortable despite minimum temperature of -7 C!
We loved the whole experience! The staff were super-friendly and the breakfast was to die for! The room blew our minds away; we ended up not going anywhere we had planned to go because we just wanted to admire the room! My partner and I have named this hotel our second home because we decided that we'll always book every time we need to be in Bloemfontein.
What a value for money Guest House. Loved the place. The receptionist; Martin; was so obliging and receptful. He went out of his way to ensure that we were comfortable in our rooms. The breakfast was excellent and more than sufficient better; than breakfast at established hotels I stayed at in Cape Town. Definitely going back there. Quiet and peaceful.
Everything was perfect, location, friendly staff, clean pool, clean spacious rooms with all the a huge bathroom and a well maintained garden, lots of privacy and a big thank you to the owners that allowed me an early check-in on Saturday and a late check out Sunday. Definitely my destination of choice when traveling to bloemfontein again.
The place is close to the highway (N1) via bloemfontein, which makes it easily accessible.

It was our second time staying at Stonehill Villa and will never stay at any other place in Bloemfontein. The rooms are nice and spacious, with self catering facilities. The hostess that welcomed us and the morning staff were extremely friendly and helpful!

I love the history of the hotel, the look and the layout. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay there when traveling through Bloem again. The decor adds alot of value to the history of the hotel.
Comfortable guest house, great location in central Mangaung/Bloemfontein which is walking distance to the University and the Mall. Was comfy enough after a long drive, and there's a lovely garden with a pool.
The warm welcome by the receptionist and my comfortable room, the respect of privacy and the fact that our cars are parked in a protected parkade. Well i generally feel like Bon hotel is a place to be.
I would recommend Tramonto guesthouse to anyone who needs a place to overnight. This will definitely be my choice for accommodation if I should be staying over in Bloemfontein.
