A stately city just inland from France’s Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, known for its wine production.
Place du Peyrou, the city’s highest point, offers excellent views and has a wide boulevard down the middle of its park. Its west end has a triumphal arch overlooking a pool and on the other side is a magnificent, 18th-century aqueduct running as far as the eye can see. To the north are France’s oldest botanical gardens, maintained by Montpellier University, one of the world’s oldest universities.
Rue du Bras de Fer is a narrow, medieval street with a secret sight through almost every portico, and another must-see is Place de la Comédie. This wide, pedestrian square is lined with street cafes and impressive buildings including the 19th-century opera house. Streets leading off contain high-end boutiques, while cheaper Montpellier shopping options are Le Polygone shopping centre and the huge Odysseum leisure and shopping complex.
Other Montpellier sights include the 14th-century cathedral and the Antigone district with its grand Neo-Classical architecture. Also worth a look is the Musée Fabre art museum, and speaking of art, keep an eye out for the brightly decorated trams.
Before leaving your Montpellier accommodation to go to Méditerranée Airport near the Cote d’Azur, sample some local seafood. The oysters are amazing!
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do.
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do. Excellent Tourist Information Centre that recommended a brilliant walking tour (in English). Loved a free photography exhibition (with English captions!) in the Pavillon Populaire near the TIC. I went to a concert at the Opera Comique and enjoyed good food but, sadly, no time for the Museum Fabre.
For a change of scene, I took a train to the coastal resort of Sete - well worth 12 euros!

The historical centre is quite small and easy to visit walking from place de la Comédie. Very good possibilities to travel with the trams. A lot of restaurants of all kinds and at very affordable rates.
Parc Du Peyrou and the aqueduct is a must see. The cathedral St Pierre is to be seen, inside as well as outside. Botanical garden is very well organised and counts numerous trees and plants.

Beautiful city.
Beautiful city. Lots of "old Europe" feel to it - tiny winding streets, quaint shops, numerous cafes. Very easy to walk but it also has a good tram system. It poured rain on my main day there, alas! I'm looking for places to retire to and Montpellier definitely ranks on it.

I filled my time very happily with a couple of excursions and a trip to Lette but could have done it in six days rather than seven. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Public transport is now free! Frequent trams take you to the outskirts, then buses for onward travel.
Train fares vary with each departure, some cheap and some can match British ones. There were a couple of delays on trains, it is a bit of a wild area and one was delayed for three hours or more as a train had collided with a wild pig!

Montpellier is such a wonderful and popular destination it can get booked up easily! Beautiful old town and other parks and monuments, great cultural life, many conferences and concerts, excellent public transportation, lively student life, and it is close to the beach and wine country with easy access to lively hills filled with history (the Aveyron, the Cevennes).
The room was pretty elegant for a 3 stars hotel, the space was really well organized and it gave the whole room the sense of a much larger one. The staff was really efficient (fastest checkin/checkout procedure we ever had), really kind and helpful.
The location is great (right across the train station) making it perfect for a pass-through Montpellier stay (as we had).
I also loved that there was a bit of milk next to the coffee machine in the room so that I can prepare my coffee the way I liked :)
It isn’t a typical hotel with a lot of rooms, but a excellent restaurant with some additional high-quality rooms. Everything, the food, drinks, furnishings, outdoor facility and especially the staff was amazing!
So, if you don’t mind to walk 20 minutes to the Centre of Montpellier (otherwise Uber/Car), you love non-touristic and Romantic stays and enjoy good food as well as wine than this is the place to be.
We really loved our stay and will definitely come back next year.
Alexandre has created an exceptional space, the grandeur of the room is the perfect destination to stay in whilst in Montpellier! The location is incredible super easy to walk around and plenty of places on your doorstep to eat and drink.
The breakfast that was provided was perfection!! Delicious pastries, fruit etc literally what you dream of when you come to France!
We also both booked in a massage, which we both really enjoyed and made our experience!
The very kind personell! Suche nice people. The room was very clean and lovely designed. The location of this charming hotel is perfect! good distance to the old town and the airport in 10 minutes drive back. Great stay. We will definatily suggests this Royal stay to everyone who's going to explore Montpellier and it's surrondings!
The hotel is located in front of Montpellier Renfe Station . All staff are very friendly and helpful with smiles all the times.
They were treated well and gave me a wonderful time. Hotel has a patio where can relax . I will be there if I am going to have a chance to visit near future.
Thank you for all.
What a great hotel for our two days in Montpellier. Unique and funky decor that was perfect for our French adventure. Super clean. Great shower for this American! Fantastic location — right off the main plaza. Super helpful and friendly staff — helped with dinner reservations. Highly highly recommend.
First stop during my holiday in France this year. Great location, could hardly have been more in the city centre. Hotel had a rustic style and the rooms had names rather than numbers. The staff was very friendly and saw me to my room. Also, great airco!
This apartment has potential and good location as in, the tram station is just around the corner. You can get into the city centre within 10-15 mins on the tram. Lidl and Aldi within walking distance. Can get to the airport by tram.
Excellent location and about 8 mins walk from Montpellier St Roch rail station. Hotel beside La Comedie theatre.
Great room, coffee machine and kettle provided too.Very comfortable bed.
Good checkin and checkout experience.
The hotel was beautiful. Great location within walking distance to the train station, and very central to shopping and restaurants. Breakfast was also a highlight and the best we had in France.
Very welcoming hotel close to St Roch train station. New lounge-style restaurant/bar concept. Extremely friendly staff. Excellent location for discovering Montpellier. Value-for-money rooms.
Nice location to see the city, even though located in the city centre it was quiet at night. The host was very helpful and the apartment well maintained! Very dog friendly :)
The room was ok, had big bad, nice bathroom. The hotel is located 7 mins from Montpellier Sant-Roche train station, and also at the entrance of the old town of Montpellier.
Great location with an easy access to the historical quarter of Montpellier. The price was fine compared to similar hotels in the area. The room was simple but good enough.
