Historic Hobart, with its convict past, was often referred to as Australia’s neglected backwater. How times have changed as its temperate climate, quiet lifestyle and fabulous food and markets make it a revitalising tourist destination along the Derwent River in Tasmania.
The city’s significant maritime history begins at Constitution Dock, situated along the waterfront and facing the beautiful harbour. Nearby Battery Point and affluent Sandy Bay feature Georgian and Victorian architecture and the first settler’s cottages in Australia’s 2nd oldest city.
Escape to a memorable view of Hobart town from the snow-covered Mount Wellington or get close up and personal in the city’s quaint streets. Hobart comes alive during the colourful Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, where you can bag a bargain or sample mouth-watering produce such as local wines and cheeses.
Cascade Brewery and Cadbury’s Chocolates have tours of these Tasmanian icons or visit Wrest Point Casino, a popular event and entertainment centre.
The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in December and Tulip Festival in the Royal Botanical Gardens swells the population in this small capital city. Make sure you check Booking.com ahead of time for your colonial cottage, cosy B&B or waterfront apartment.

Richmond was worth a look at the convict bridge and quirky shops. The old jail was interesting. Salmon ponds were good and lunch of pancakes there was delicious! Russell falls was very pretty. Needed more than a day to see all that Hobart has to offer.

Hobart was full of interesting buildings and places to visit, particularly Constitution Dock (Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race) and MONA. It was a good place to take day trips to Bruny Island or Port Arthur and other notable places. The Salamanca Markets is a must. I was surprised at how hilly it is.

I liked the cooler weather after living in Queensland and Nortern NSW for 60 years where it is too hot for me.
I like the fact that lots of history has been preserved.
I found there to be a shortage of eating venues, I couldn't find a nice, reasonably priced place for a good meal. The public transport is good but reality doesn't always agree with what is noted on the internet.
I followed timetables but sometimes the bus didn't run any more eg Cornelian bay had most of its advertised services cancelled. I depend entirely on the buses or walking as I do not drive so the bus service is very important to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 9 day stay in Hobart.

My 2nd time in Hobart. The last trip was a decade ago.
My 2nd time in Hobart. The last trip was a decade ago. Hobart gives a different vibe from the other cities in Australia. Tassies are very friendly & made me feel at ease. The city is very safe & I do not have any issues walking alone during the evening.
Fantastic location in Hobart - opposite Royal Hobart Hospital (but you wouldn't know it, very rarely heard ambulances etc.) and within very easy walking distance of Victoria Dock/Constitution Dock. Rooms were extremely spacious (we had an interconnecting hotel room and 1 bed apartment setup); kitchen a great size; bathrooms lovely. Beds very comfortable. Handy to have a laundry on the first floor as well. Also received some lovely Lindt chocolates for Easter :) All of the reception staff were helpful and a pleasure to deal with.
What a wonderful stay. The staff were friendly. Amelia at reception was fantastic, helping us with an early check in. The location of this hotel is perfect with excellent views over the waterfront. So many great choices for dining out and a short stroll to Salamanca. The buffet breakfast was spot on with freshly cooked eggs or omelette made to your wishes a bonus. Parking was easy. Our bed was super comfy with a pillow menu being on offer. Hard to fault our stay.
the property is exceptional, with features available in most 5 star hotels but without the the price. staff were amazing, beds showers fantastic, Timms and architecture of the hotel are world class. on our last night we had just returned from a huge hike. the wonderful staff gave us bath salts and a bar of local chocolate without us asking. we finished the nice with delicious fresh food, great wines and jazz in the downstairs bar. a must stay when in Hobart.
Modern, unpretentious, and fuss-free hotel. Great location (just a short walk to the main city areas). Comfortable-sized room with a great view of the mountain. Reception staff were super helpful and friendly. Cleaning staff were very careful and we came back to a clean and tidy room each day. Just a really easy and comfortable stay. No complaints; if I come back to visit Hobart, this will be the first hotel I look into again. :)
The apartment we were in was lovely, super clean and spacious, the room was cleaned / tidied daily while we were out (haven't stayed in a fully serviced apartment in ages!) We loved the layout and that our car was able to be parked close, nicely renovated in a beautiful heritage building, and staff were lovely. Had everything we needed. Was close to Woolworths and not far from Hobart cbd and waterfront, just a short drive.
The hotel is in an excellent location, right in the heart of the Hobart CBD. It's within walking distance to great cafes, restaurants and shops. The vibe of the hotel is very 1950's glamour which i loved. Only thing is that it is an old hotel so you can hear every step the person in the room above you makes, but other then that it was a perfect stay.
The location with views to kunanyi/Mount Wellington and of the Derwent River were sublime and so close to everything we needed, as was the ferry from Bellerive to Hobart City which was within easy walking distance and adjacent to the Waterfront Hotel - their steaks are delicious! Our host Emily was wonderful and this property is highly recommended.
Well-located hotel, between Hobart's centre and the waterfront. Room was very clean, and seemed recently refurbished. Size was small but comfortable. The bathroom was also very clean. Days that I was there were very hot, and the air conditioner was very effective. Service was very efficient, staff were friendly, I had no issues.
I love staying at Customs House Hotel whenever I visit Hobart. Amazing value for money, always friendly, comfortable and clean. This time we booked a suite with balcony and was not disappointed! Love that breakfast is included (always amazing) and walking distance from waterfront and Salamanca.
This is a great little apartment hotel in a superb location. The rooms are large, comfortable and well equiped. The staff were helpful and friendly. The hotel is about a 2 minute walk from Salamanca Place (and markets) and the historic Hobart docks. Highly recommended.
My partner and I had an amazing 4-night stay in this hotel on 9th floor. The location was a bonus as it was both close to CBD and waterfront with spectacular views of the ocean from our room. The Room was clean and our bed was comfortable. I definitely recommend it.
The location was amazing! Right in walking distance to anywhere we wanted to go. The staff at the hotel were so helpful and knowledgeable and the room was better than we could’ve imagined. The perfect place to spend a few days in Hobart!
The location in the centre or Hobart CBD was excellent. Easy walking distance to waterfront. The hotel facilities were safe & secure, quiet, modern and clean. The standard rooms are an excellent size and the decor modern with free Wi-Fi.
The location was great! Lots of restaurants and bars in the vicinity and some nice walking parks. Not a family friendly hotel in my opinion. Very clean though and I enjoyed it. No free parking though.
Booked this hotel for our visit to Hobart, clean hotel but could do with a refurb (some parts are quiet tired) away from this, location good.
We ended up stayiing twice.
A lovely boutique hotel a short walk out of Hobart with stunning views of Mt Wellington. Beautiful rooms and lovely staff and breakfast. Highly recommended a stay here.
