Located in the Flemish province of West Flanders, the city of Ostend (or Oostende) is the biggest on the Belgian coast. This cosmopolitan seaside resort has long sandy beaches, a modern harbour and magnificent fish restaurants.
Built in September 1905 in the presence of King Leopold II, the imposing Roman Catholic Neo-Gothic church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is the symbol of Oostende. Housed in a former department store built by Gaston Eysselinck, Ostend's Museum of Modern Art has an interesting collection of contemporary Belgian works.
The Oostende Railway Station is a gorgeous building between the Marina and the Vissers Kaai, featuring classical style architecture. Leaving the railway station you will find a stunning fishing market with numerous fish stands selling mussels, crabs and herrings.
Wander around the promenade and visit one of the traditional restaurants to enjoy Dover Sole, shrimp croquettes and tomatoes filled with shrimps. Booking.com has lots of hotels, apartments and holiday homes by the North Sea.
Situated in a strategic position, the beautiful destination of Ostend is 1 hour away from Brussels and is accessible by train. The Ostend-Bruges International Airport serves a big variety of destinations, including regions on the Mediterranean Coast and Canary Islands.

Busy central area. Was quite easy to find our way around. Had to park our car a mile away from our hotel as first green, free parking, area around us. Not great to then have to carry bags back to the hotel. Too cold and windy to go on the beach, but I think it would be lovely to go there when the weather is sunny. We were only there for 24 hours but would like to return to see more of the area.

Ostend is fine for a couple of nights. Some good bar/restaurants where we had excellent steak. Good selection of great Belgian beers too. Ostend is only a half hour from Bruges (even quicker by train), so can be used a a base to explore Flanders. Out of season Holiday town, the Blackpool of Belgium!! Ideal for a base to visit Brugge (15 mins by Train), and the Belgian Coast. Take the Tram along the coast to De Panne near the French border or the other way to Knokke near the Dutch Border.

Ostend was very attractive.
Ostend was very attractive. There are lots of big green parks to wander through, and a huge sandy beach with a big promenade. There are lots of bars and cafes, and also some attractive old parts of town where Paris-style balconied apartments can be viewed. There are buses and trams in town, and the train takes only 11 minutes to get to Bruges for day trips.

I visited ManiFiesta, an annual festival of solidarity at the Wellington horse track. It takes place in early September and it's a wonderful opportunity to see live music and dance, but also for debates, films and to meet like-minded people from all over Europe. I was traveling alone, but if you are a family with 4 , there is also 1 bed, 1 sofa for 2, and one more sofa, so there was enough sleeping place. All the accommodations. All the necessary stuff for cooking and cleaning. The apartment was very clean. Close to the beach. The owner was very friendly and helpful if I had any questions . Check-in was smooth and efficient and our room was much bigger than I was expecting including the bathroom which even came with a bath. The hotel is a minute's walk from the beach and about a fifteen minute walk from the train station. We found it very convenient for the main shopping area of Ostend. Everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was good with plenty to choose from including non-dairy options.
