Interesting place!
Interesting place! Some beautiful sites around the main square. Worth staying close by to attractions as walking is the best way to get around, Traffic is a gridlocked nightmare. People are generally friendly and helpful. Try to get out to the countryside to see the natural beauty of Mongolia.

Ulaanbaatar is a great location (and one of the only options) to base your Mongolia starting point out of. Having a few nights in the city is all you need, but when traveling to Mongolia, your goal should be to get into the country and tour what makes Mongolia and it's nomadic culture and open landscape so unique. For example, in a 10 day trip to Mongolia, I would only spend 3 days in Ulaanbaatar and the rest with a guide out in the countryside.

It was noisy and very busy with traffic.
It was noisy and very busy with traffic. Footpaths are a walking hazard. Very few people spoke English and weren't very helpful.
I found a delightful vegan cafe that had modified traditional Mongolian food so I ate there a couple of times. The Gandan Monastery precinct was interesting.

Ulaanbaatar s a great base for exploring Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar s a great base for exploring Mongolia. It’s a modern capital but with the added extra that it’s the centre of a nomadic country. The 1930s purge means that there is not a lot of old culture. So if you like temples and castles, go somewhere else. Sukkbataar Square is great to wander around in teh evenings. Families and young people having fun and socialising. The Chinggis Khan museum is excellent.

A city in progress day by day with mixture of old building...
A city in progress day by day with mixture of old building and modern buildings in harmonization to let you feel both history and development at once time. There are paintings on wall of building on street reflecting either traditional culture, modern art pr commercial advertisement, but all very nice. but traffic is little bit heavy at summit time. There are construction field on street in summer may block the way.
The temperature in summer (in June) is good for travel on day and at night for sleep.
Airport is new and highway is also new and convenient, People are friendly. The city is close to forest, grassland and some sand dunes, landscape are diverse, My only concern is the grassland under great pressure of overgrazing and risk to degradation.
Top Tour & Guesthouse was fabulous!! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Breakfast was made for you in the morning and was delicious and they had a driving service to the airport (that was really cheap compared to cabs and other options). It was smaller than other hostels I’ve stayed at but that was part of the charm. It was walking distance to many of the coolest sites in UB. The facilities were really clean and comfortable and it was really cheap. I would highly recommend a stay with Top Tours and Guesthouse Mongolia.
This host is an absolute hero and helped me sort out a very difficult situation from the UK... from arrival at Airport in Mongolia, Anna was extremely tired due to visa issues at Beijing, and zero sleep - the host contacted Anna directly and helped sort out a taxi from the airport for most of the afternoon to find a taxi and help Anna reach the property after her Western Union exchange had been denied by the Agent slimy because of Annas nationality. The host went above and beyond... Thank you so much.
The location was a convenient walk to the main sights. The room I stayed in was very spacious and clean, so were all the shared facilities. The owner is very quick and efficient with all her responses and even though I wasn’t able to meet her personally, she made sure that all the arrangements were well taken cared of and her family was very kind. The pick up from the airport was also very efficient and I would definitely stay here again in the future.
the owner of the hostel was very good-natured, met us and explained everything in English. our stay with friends was very comfortable, especially liked our room with Mongolian beds. The location is really convenient, there are grocery stores, cafes nearby. Literally 5 minutes is the Genghis Khan Museum. hostel cheap clean, clean linen, there is everything you need in the kitchen. recommend you stay in this hostel👍🏻
Always know you're going to sleep well, eat well and be comfy at a Holiday Inn - the UlaanBaatar hotel was no exception.
Great size room, lovely large, comfy bed, got dark enough. Great food in the restaurant, great choices at breakfast. Decent WiFi.
Very close walk to the Gandan Monastery and a slightly longer walk to Chinggis Khaan square (though that in itself is pretty underwhelming!)
- Central location near the main square
- Clean all day long
- Friendly staff who are really trying to help despite not always speaking good English
- They organise trip around Mongolia for very very good price if you are five people to gather.
- They do not pressure you to buy any of their trips, if you don’t mention it they will not ask you which I found really fair.
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, boasts numerous hotels, but there are very few of high quality. If you're traveling alone or with a loved one, consider visiting Nomado Boutique Hotel. It is one of the finest hotels in Mongolia, with impeccable services and stunning room decor. If you're coming from abroad, you can book a room at a discounted price on the booking.com website.
Everything went well - I requested a ride to the airport which was reasonably priced and flawless. Rooms were clean, water was hot, Internet was speedy. Staff was incredible honoring all of our requests. We stayed here again at the end of our trip because we had such a good experience. It's not a luxury hotel, but it doesn't need to be - it's exactly as advertised.
Great location. Room was also on a high floor with good view. Huge room with alot of space to keep luggage open while moving around the room. Breakfast was good too, I enjoyed it. Would've been better if the TV was a smart TV. Nonetheless, a great deal as I had booked early in advance and enjoyed a good rate for a 5 star hotel on my last night in Mongolia.
I loved how friendly the owner was. They organised the pickup and dropoff to the airport for me. And everything was on time and the driver was super nice too. The room is big and clean, same goes for the bathroom. Everything is very nice, a bit loud tho, but that really depends on the people staying in the hostel.
The atmosphere was super good! Everything looked so adorable and comfortable. Oyuka the host was so kind. She asked me to eat breakfast the next morning, which was so delicious (in Mongolian: амттай/amttai). However, my journey was too short. I hope I could stay more days here.
Best place in UB. Breakfast was good and changed every day. Staff was helpful and friendly. Rooms were basic (it is mongolia) but comfortable, lots of areas to hang out, kitchen to cook in, good location.
Everytime when I visit Mongolia I stay here. Great location. Everything in walking distance. Save so much time. Excellent breakfast buffet with many choices. I really liked the traditional food section.
Location, staff and breakfast are the best things for Urgoo. Very accommodating staff who helped us book airport pickup and were very responsive. I love coffee and English breakfast.
- English-speaking stuff which is extremely rare for Mongolia.
- The bed was huge and comfy.
- TV had channels in English.
- Wi-Fi was alright.
- Not that far from the center.
Very welcoming clean and comfortable. Well worth getting the taxi shuttle they provide from the airport. We were able to store our luggage for 5 days untill we came back.
I have travelled in 192 countires around thge world and only 4 missing now and I can highly recommend the Hotel Zolo for everyone coming to Ulan Bator, Mongolia.
