This was one of our expensive stops on our trip. In the end we didn't mind the cost as any excess that we thought we were paying is going to charitable causes. We would encourage everyone to do this. This is a wonderful place with wonderful people and a wonderful mission. And the rooms are good. And there are lashings of hot water. And the staff are great and so is the breakfast and the restaurant and it's only four blocks walk from Poncho Plaza. Please come in droves and add to the successes of this place. We stayed an extra night and were sad to leave. Great communal sofa area with log fire as well!

The service of all the hotels I stayed in Ecuador, this was by far the most professional and dedicated service I have seen. The attention for details were excellent, the cocktails amazing especially the custom cocktails were spot on. The food a real recommendation, the English level is excellent.

An ideal size city, big enough to have a lot going on, but small enough to be easy to get around on foot and feel safe even out in the streets at night. So many great places to eat, and of course the crafts markets including the Plaza de Ponchos (but be sure to check out the other markets more off the tourist track) are amazing. Outside the city, the surrounding villages and attractions such as the Peguche waterfalls are worth the time to go see.

We took a bus from Quito to Otavalo and then used taxis to get around very cheaply. The highlights were visiting Parque Condor (so many birds of prey to view in large cages, all rescued, including two condors), a ride on a boat (30 min) at Cuicocha National Park (its a crater lake created by a volcano), and of course shopping at the Otavalo Market (so many beautiful handmade items to purchase).

We went for the market, which merited the half-day we gave it. The local handicrafts and products are swamped by the imported goods (often Chinese nonsense and knock-offs) and household supplies that are of little / no interest to tourists. Even our most ardent shoppers came away empty-handed, which is unfortunate for the local vendors. It was a good jumping-off point for a trip to Cotacachi (famous for its leather but not on Sunday!) and Laguna Cuicocha, a crater lake with nice views and multiple hiking options, which we enjoyed.

Otavalo is lovely, the markets are amazing.
Otavalo is lovely, the markets are amazing. Just DO NOT STAY AT Los phonchos appartment. it is extremly noisey, the owner is a cheat and a lier. He will rip you off. He tells you one thing, then will rip you off. BE AWARE. DO NOT STAY THERE> Not to be trusted. There are lots of other lovely places to stay. Places that are honest.

Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself.
Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself. I did the laguna cuicocha hike on a saturday solo but had been seeing other groups and I was taken into the rocks off the trail by a man with a gun and knife. He robbed me and took advantage of me. It was the scariest moment of my life. Please please please do not to this hike alone and only go with a group. I only was able to visit the Mercado 24 de Mayo which was wonderful for local food before I left the town because I couldn't be there anymore.

The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self.
The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self. The market is flooded with cheap goods from China - microfiber children's clothing, trinkets, etc. It's hard to find the local products, and there are few left. Should be removed from tourist routes!
It was a really nice stay and great money value, it exceeded our expectations. The staff was really friendly and accommodating, the hotel is strategically located in downtown Otavalo, walking distance from the iconic "Mercado de los Ponchos" and closed by restaurants for late night dinner options. The hotel has covid prevention measures, parking facilities (for an additional fee) and breakfast was fresh and delicious. I would stay again when I visit back Otavalo!
We felt welcomed by Patricio and his family the moment we arrived. Located in San Pablo del Lago the inn is only about a 25 minute drive to Otavalo. Our room was comfortable, clean and very spacious. Great view of the nearby lake and mountain ranges from our room's window. Delicious meals (breakfast and dinner) included with the price. Easy parking. We highly recommend it.
The place is realy great, the owner and is family are welcoming and helpfull. It s a little paradise in the montagne!
Easy to access by otavalo, from the bus terminal you take the bus to san pablo and get down at Gonzales Suarez (0,35$) and from there you just have to walk 5min following the maps location.
I highly recommend this place for yoyr stay in the region !!
Almost nothing. There was no restaurant, no vending machines, and the desk was never staffed. It felt like staying in a hotel from a horror movie. The pictures posted on booking.com are very deceiving and it’s not close to the lake as they portray. Staff was not at the desk at checkout and we had to return later in the day to pay. Avoid this hotel if possible!
The Aylluwasi is a lovely refuge from the bustle of Otavalo. Our room was huge, clean, nicely decorated with old photographs and quiet. Alberto, the owner, is a wonderful and thoughtful person who enjoys gardening by the number of potted plants in the common areas and rooms. We recommend La Cosecha restaurant nearby, great food, locale and service.
It's a really nice place very close to the city centre and within walking distance to the bus station. Alberto is very responsive and calm, the place has a distinct character and the rooms are spacious. There is warm water and facilities to prepare a meal if you want
I would definitely come back to stay there if I pass by Otavalo again!
The view of the guest is amazing, you can easely see the Imbabura and the Cotacachi from your balcony. The owners are very king and can give you a lot of advice for your activities ! The sheets are made from fabrics sourced directly from the Otavalo market, so we're immersed right into our journey!
We lived absolutely everything about this wonderful hotel.
The attention from the staff was excellent. It is very centrally located.
The food was excellent.
The bed was very comfortable and the hot water was hot hot hot.
Really what more could you ask for. It was perfect.
And Pancha is a doll.
The staff were all very nice and helpful. The hotel itself is tranquil and it is located near the downtown core so everything is within walking distance. We did a hike on a rainy day and the hotel took care of our laundry including our running shoes at a very reasonable price.
Didn't end up staying at Hostal Curiñan because they overbooked and then made arrangements for us to stay at a different family-owned hotel. BEWARE....massive bait and switch when they "overbook" with an attempt to up-charge...especially if you don't speak Spanish.
The hotel is very clean, with a very friendly and helpful staff. Parking is at the sister hotel but the walk is very easy and not far. It has a central location that makes access to restaurants and markets very easy. Bathroom had hot water and was also very clean.
A very nice hostel where you immediately feel like you are in good hands. The family is very nice and accommodating and there are many hiking opportunities in the area besides Otavalo. You also get an impression of rural life in Ecuador, which I really liked.
The hotel is very conveniently located in central Otavalo. The employees are friendly, there's a breakfast included, the room has lots of windows with good city and mountain views, and there are many restaurants and shops nearby.
Excellent breakfast, very clean, beautiful location, quiet room, lots of outdoor spaces to sit, good wifi. Hotel has large courtyard with trees and plants. Beautiful old building, lovingly upgraded.
One of the nicest hostels in South America. Spotlessly clean, great simple breakfast (with hand squeezed orange juice). Quiet hostel perfect for exploring Otavalo. Great kitchen as well
