Dusting itself off from a series of recent earthquakes is the seriously stunning New Zealand city of Christchurch. While its old English buildings like ChristChurch Cathedral are being rebuilt, the magnificent Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park sustain its reputation as the Garden City.

I was based in Hornby for my 3-day stay. The motel I used was perfectly placed for everything I needed to do, next to a lovely park and with easy access to restaurants and the Hub mall facilities for shopping. I wish I'd had a bit more time to explore how the city centre has changed since I was last there, but not this trip.

I spent 4 months in NZ and for various reasons and at different times, stayed about 9 nights/days in Christchurch, alone and also with my husband. We loved the vibe of the city. It felt a happy place, offering everything a city has to offer but in an intimate way. It felt safe, clean and it was lovely to see families enjoying the public bbqs and spaces. Lots of greenery and parks. A place that felt traditional yet new. Great places to eat, drink and watch the world go by. Really loved this place and I am not a city person! Riccarton House and gardens was a highlight. There are plenty of places around to explore for day trips too and the second hand bookshops in Ferry Road area are the least expensive I have come across in NZ! Could definitely keep going back there, even just for the hospitality and genuine friendliness of the locals.

Our visit was shorter than we would of liked but I fully recommend the International Antarctic Centre - children loved it and we could of stayed longer, informational, fun, interactive and lots to do, husky puppy was gorgeous and Matua who greeted us was informative and korero was refreshing. The cafe was great and again even the children found food they liked.
We went to Build-a-Bear to create a keepsake of our trip and that was a fun activity - Mall was open to 9pm so we were able to pop down and not rush.
The Outlet Store for new Crocs - a must for Croc addicted children.
Christchurch Tram Tour - Is a must-do. (We have done this tour previously and were disappointed to not be able to go this visit)
Christchurch Library (Tūranga) - Interactive and fun, friendly people.
We had hired a Campervan to travel in and there was a lot of areas that you could park a Camper so that was great for us to pull over and walk around.
We didn't do as much sightseeing as we would have liked but we have decided to book again for a few more days there as we spent more time in Dunedin then we expected.
We did miss going to Cookie Time as traffic was horrendous so that needs to be planned better for our next time down there.

We only had half a day in Christchurch (arrived at night, then flew out at 5pm next day) but even that was too much time to spend here! I wouldn't want to come back again. There wasn't anything interesting to see or do, apart from the "Quake City" exhibit which was good. Walked thru the botanic gardens and around the "city centre" but it was pretty much a ghost town, with hardly any people or tourists around and not really any good shops. We kept Googling for things to do, but ended up just sitting in the cafe at a Mitre 10 hardware store to fill in time til we had to go to the airport. I guess this city is more of a base for flying into (more flights than Queenstown) and for exploring further away sites.
We were picked up only 5 min after a call to the Sudima. Van driver was friendly and helpful, considering it was after midnight , we were impressed. Check in was easy. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and we were well rested and ready to start our holiday, we were even offered a lift back to the airport to collect our hire car. Driver Ken gave us lots of advice for our trip. This hotel so close to the airport and way cheaper than any other accomodation I looked up, we were beyond impressed.
It was just what we expected. For a first time traveling to Christchurch from Fiji, we had our money well spent at this place as we only wanted a place that is affordable, safe and can fit the group.
The host was so accommodating and friendly. She was always available and really made our trip enjoyable.
The two bedroom apartments the we booked were enough for the group of 9 athletes and 3 officials. We were surprised that we did not experience any of what we read in the review.
We ended our coach tour at The Distinction Hotel, Cathedral Square. And wishing to stay on in Christchurch we found Quest Apartments on the www. The apartment had all that we needed
and was very good value. We didn't need a car and we could walk around the square and visit the library, walk to the Botanic Gardens, and the shops, the bus station The location was perfect. We could prepare our own breakfast, morning/afternoon tea and ate our lunch/dinner out.
Great sized room, which was very clean, with a comfortable bed and everything needed for a short stay in Riccarton. The owner and staff were very kind, friendly and accommodating. Ideal location if you need somewhere between the airport and Christchurch Central, with an added bonus of being immediately opposite Westfield Riccarton Mall for shopping and within easy walking distance of a considerable choice of restaurants and takeaways as well.
I love this hotel! This was our 2nd stay and it’s my go to hotel in Christchurch because of it amazing location, dwntwn across from the gardens and museum. The 2 bedroom apartments are very spacious, modern, comfortable, quiet and have great views. It’s excellent value for money and there’s a cafe below and a coffee truck outside.
Friendly welcome at this accommodation, which is ideally situation for Christchurch International Airport (c. 5 minutes by car). We enjoyed a comfortable and good-value overnight stay, and the hosts kindly allowed us to check in early since we'd arrived after a very long international journey and were ready for a rest.
Despite being close to the airport it was very quiet. We arrived in Christchurch at 1am and the hotel shuttle arrived promptly after we requested it. The drivers from the airport and to return the next day were very polite and friendly. We are staying there again on our return to Christchurch.
free parking and large room - we had a exec room.
It was very quiet which was surprising for Riccarton Road.
There is a dairy ( corner shop) and thai and chicken places about a minute from the hotel.
Its also near Riccarton Mall and petrol stations and on the airport run.
I liked the location was right at the Christchurch Airport. We had a very early flight the next morning and the location was convenient with a short walk to the terminal to check in our bags and board our flight. The hotel alos had a bar and restaurant with great food.
The room was very clean and well equipped. The staff at reception was very helpful with recommendations and offered to help us with our bags. The location is near christchurch CBD and easy to get to via uber. It was also a short drive to the airport. Will recommend!
The proximity to the airport is one of the major attractions of this hotel - perhaps a 100m walk. It is also immediately adjacent to the rental car carpark. The Food Exchange restaurant on the top floor was also excellent.
I had a very early flight the following day and the LyLo is a short walk to the Christchurch Airport. I had never stayed in a pod hotel before and I was surprised at how comfortable it was and how well I slept.
Clean and spacious room, staff were very helpful, 10-15min walk to CBD and there is a direct bus (no. 29) right outside the hotel that goes to/from the airport.
