Downtown Reykjavik is full of life, joy and culture, so it can be noisy at night. We recommend enjoying the live music at the bar downstairs, which will stop at 11 in the night.

A lovely place easy to walk around. We hired a car and drove out most days. Very expensive to eat and drink out - take advantage of the happy hours ! We booked an apartment which helped as we had breakfast and made sandwiches each day. Roads are good to drive out on the Golden Circle Tour. Don't miss the 'free' places where you can go into the thermal pools/rivers.

We were there for 4 days. Such a lot to see.
We were there for 4 days. Such a lot to see. So different from other holidays. Many interesting things to see and learn about. You wont see anything similar anywhere else in the world. only a 2 hr flight for us from scotland, and well worth the trip. We had heard it was very expensive, but although about 30%-40% more expensive it wasnt as bad as we had anticipated. All guides and bus drivers were excellent and we didnt meet a single person who couldnt speak english fluently.Even managed to catch the celtic v rangers old firm game in a local pub . What else can you ask for. ? Would thoroughly recommend a trip to iceland.

This review is very much aimed at parents.
This review is very much aimed at parents. We couldn't do a lot of the famous activities due to having a little one but I still 100% recommend Iceland.
Reykjavik is an excellent place to visit for a small city break with a two year old. We were cautious but I am so glad we did it! I recommend getting an apartment over a hotel. It is slightly more expensive but well worth the investment.
Reykjavik is very pushchair friendly and most places allow children to eat for free. Just be careful which restaurants you choose as not all places cater for children.
If you are from the UK, budget for around £250 per day. It is expensive!
Places to eat:
For lunch/dinner - Brass Kitchen and Bar - Laugavegur 66, 101 (children's menu and really friendly)
I cannot remember the name but there is an Indian restaurant next door to the Bio Paradis on Hverfisgata 101. It is phenomenal! No children's menu so take snacks if you have a toddler.
For breakfast/lunch - Sandholt - Laugavegur 36, 101 (kids eat free)
Places to visit:
The Blue Lagoon! The hype is real, do it!
Lava Show
Puffin watching (we got to see a whale also!)

Really great vibes, cool and aesthetic cafes with world-class coffee and pastries. Astonishing views of mountains all around the city. For the best 'like-a-local' experience, make sure you visit the public pools - it is brilliant to soak in the warm water after a day of walking around the city!

Only a small city and easy to get round in a day.
Only a small city and easy to get round in a day. Excursions outside of the city that involve coach transport are, like everything else in Reykjavik, eye-wateringly expensive. The norm seems to be to hire a car which provides a signififcant cost saving. That's probably fine in the Summer but in February, when it's snowing heavily most of the time that isn't an attractive proposition. Make use of Happy Hour which runs from about 5pm to around 8pm. Beer prices are around half price then. Although that's still about £6.00 a pint. It is expensive but you know that before you go so there's no point moaning. 3 days was good, 4 would have been better. Choose a hotel as close to the centre as you can and one which is close to a collection/drop off point for coach transport if you don't fancy hiring a car. The buses have designated pick up points and if your accomodation isn't near one it can be a long walk. Use public transport for airport transfers (both ways) taxis are about £140.00 each way. The buses are approx £40.00. It's a brilliant and beautiful city, with friendly helpful locals. You might even see the Northern Lights. We didn't, due to the blizzards, but I'm assured they are there.
The accomodation was clean and the location is really perfect, the BSÍ bus terminal was close by, it's a walking distance to the city centre, plus there are a bunch of day trips where a bus will pick you up directly from the hostel. The rooms, beds and bedding were simple but quite comfortable and clean. There are a lot of bathrooms on every floor so even with the hostel almost full, I never waited too long for one. The kitchenette has everything you need to make a quick. For such a cheap price, this is really an amazing place to stay.
Very nice hotel in the center of Reykjavik! We were walking distance to the church, great bars and restaurants, the beautiful conference center and the coast. Also very close to bus stop 14, where we went for pick up for various day tours in Iceland. Morning breakfast was good and appreciated. The staff were very friendly and helpful with questions. We also received a free dinner at a local restaurant, which was a really nice surprise! The room was small but very comfortable. We asked for twin beds and got a twin bed room.
Apart from the fact that we were rushed at breakfast, it was one of the best we've had in Iceland. But I did not expect anything less from a Hilton Hotel. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, the room very spacious and quiet. Big parking lot. We wanted to explore Reykjavik and go to the Sky Lagoon, the city center was only 5 minutes and the Sky Lagoon around 10 minutes away by car, which was very convenient. Also it was a good starting point for the Golden circle. Overall a very nice stay.
- Amazing breakfast, well worth it paying for it, so many good options
- Hotel restaurant is lovely, lots of good options and a good vibe in the eve with happy hour
- Lots of stylish areas of the hotel to relax in, wish we had more time to enjoy them
- Heated floor in the bathroom is great after cold days!
- Easy and friendly check in
- Spacious room and comfy bed
- Great location with good access to everything in Reykjavik city centre
The hotel is located in the center of the city, everything is easily accessible, restaurants, shops, etc.
We were welcomed from a nice staff and one of them recommended some places to observe the Northern Lights, he was really kind. The room was clean and bright, the bed soft and super comfortable. Rich breakfast for all tastes.
If you are looking for a place to stay in Reykjavík I'll recommend Hotel Plaza!
Great location and super walkable to all of downtown Reykjavik. The staff (especially Matt) were so wonderful and helpful. The staff helped book taxis and transfer from the airport which was very convenient. Bed was super comfy. Check in and check out were smooth. The breakfast and coffee are great. It is tucked away off the main street so it's less busy and less full of tourists which is nice.
This hotel was fantastic! Large room, plenty of outlets and luggage bench for two suitcases.. Only Iceland lodging we've stayed at that has had washcloths and kleenex. No refrigerator, but the staff gladly kept our food in their refrigerator. Great breakfast. Parking available right outside the hotel and short walk to main street in downtown Reykjavik. Requested mountain view was great.
Perfect location in downtown Reykjavik close to everything. The owner, Garoar was super friendly and helpful and available to answer any questions we had. I cannot recommend a better place to stay here. Added bonus, it is located next door to the most famous bakery in town!! The cinnamon rolls are a must!
We had a “family” room, which was quite large by Iceland standards, particularly downtown. The location is perfect for enjoying downtown Reykjavik’s shops and night life. Walking distance to Harpa and museums. Staff were helpful with suggestions. We would definitely stay again.
The room was clean and had almost everything needed for a short stay. The city centre was only a 20 minute walk away and the supermarket next door was really handy. The area is also very quiet at night. Perfect room for a couple looking for a cheaper stay in Reykjavik!
This 3 bed room apartment is perfect for 4 of us, it is very clean, quiet, comfy with everything we need. The location is very convenient that is close to the bus terminal to the Airport, and also to downtown of Reykjavik, all in walking distance.
Beautiful hotel in the heart of Reykjavik city centre.
Perfect location
Breakfast was so good! I definitely recommend including breakfast during your stay.
Very clean and peaceful ambience, even greeted with a cool jazz ensemble upon arrival!
Grand Hotel is located on the edge of Reykjavik which is good for departing the city, but if you want to be right downtown then it's a good 30min walk. There is a free transport service every hour during the day which is perfect.
Good location - 15min walk to the church and the city centre, free parking, cheaper than local hotels (we had a hotel booking cancelled due to strikes so looked elsewhere). Host was welcoming and helpful and breakfast was good.
The location. It is the best. All our tours picked us up at bus No 8 which is about 2 minutes walk from the hotel. It is also at the entrance of the downtown center. One could not find something better located.
Great hotel with friendly staff and top notch amenities. Right downtown, with access to the beautiful city of reykjavik, and great bars and restaurants in and around the hotel!
A very cozy place in a quiet neighborhood, yet very close to downtown Reykjavik. The staff is super kind and they really help you make the best out of your stay in the city.
