It's a nice city but not as amazing as others in Peru.
It's a nice city but not as amazing as others in Peru. Plenty to do if you're young and adventurous, and some good attractions nearby including the town of Llamas and its Castle and several waterfalls. A lot of excellent restaurants and the "Plaza de Armas" (town square) is brand new and very impressive. The city is noisy, however, and the roads are a mess. Lots of stray dogs, also, which is a problem all over Peru. (Watch out for poop on the sidewalks!)

Tarapoto and the surrounding areas have some interesting attractions including a number of waterfalls and also the Castle in Lamas. Good starting point for a visit to the Peru Selva. Traveled from Tarapoto to Laguna Azul in Sauce which is very nice

I don't like Tarapoto itself that much.
I don't like Tarapoto itself that much. It is noisy and hectic without that native touch like Iquitos or Cusco, for example. The Café Zygo is very sweet though and the owner Patricia made it and the organic food with love. Also the environment is very beautiful, there are waterfalls to visit, a lake and a lot more. So for being active and make tours, Tarapoto a is good base. But as city I recommand Lamas more, what is just 20 km away. Definitly for a day visit. It is sweet and quiet with an impressive castle.GudrunGermany

I’ve stayed in many places in Tarapoto where there are sooo many loud motocars and since this is outside the city it’s very quiet and peaceful. I also really enjoyed the little puppy on the property and the small monkeys in the trees plus the staff were all very nice and took really good care of me. Next time I want to stay longer!KKCPeru

The staff are wonderful especially one of the waiters, Juan who was kind and available every day. There is a nice size pool where you can have drinks. The restaurant is nearby with a very good menu. The rooms were spacious with large bathrooms; the beds very comfortable. Housekeeping attended too the room very well. The staff also made our stay very special.
