Andre & Sonja were lovely, friendly hosts. Easy to talk to and, from what we could see, both had been keen cyclists/runners in their younger days. The directions to their home were easy to follow and, as they were not going to be home when we arrived, they had left clear instructions on where we would find our room/bathroom taped to ranchslider.
We arrived to house lights on and the lounge fireplace and fireplace by our bedroom lit. As the forecast was predicting snow, the fires were certainly welcome.
Andre & Sonja's guest room and facilities are in a seperate wing off their main living area. Our bedroom was cosy and the bed very comfortable. There is a creek that runs past the back of the house which is very relaxing to listen to as you drift off to sleep.
Absolutely perfect place to stay for the skiing fraternity, cyclists etc.
Plateau Lodge is located 15 minutes’ drive from UNESCO World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park, where guests can enjoy skiing, hiking, cycling and paddling activities.

Tracy and the landlords were incredibly warm and accommodating during my stay. Tracy's genuine care and attention made my recovery from an accident much smoother. Their friendliness and support truly made a difference. Highly recommend!
The isite leaves a lot to be desired. It could easily go from barely adequate to basic competence by putting boards outside stating the office is closed. As walkers are supposed to register their walks on the mountain you wonder how accurate their information is when the office is closed and there isn’t even a notice board outside for walkers to use to show they’ve left or returned.
The village in summer, now the Chateau is closed, has very little available accommodation.
There is a shop for basics and Skotel runs a great restaurant and bar.

Absolutely recommend the 2 hour walk to Taranaki Falls.
Absolutely recommend the 2 hour walk to Taranaki Falls. You can do it in sneakers, some parts are lovely bush right alongside the river. The landscape keeps changing. Its beautiful and the air is so fresh. There's a table at the falls so take your picnic and stop for a while.
Get your caffeine fix from TNT Pataka Food Truck at Whakapapa Holiday Park, they make a decent coffee and the food looked good too.
Unfortunately some places in the area closed due to staff shortages, so it might pay to check for what is open when you visit.

Hi,
It is better to plan your trip for at least two days. You can enrol your kids to ski school at the nearby school for a longer duration trip so that they learn the art of skiing. Bringing chains with the car will help you to revisit the Whakapapa skiing location often and reduce the commute cost. All in all, it was good to see snow all around especially if you are coming from the northern part of NZ.

Meant to say in my review last night that we had a lovely waitress for dinner, young girl,Lisa? And the main reason we didn't pay for the dinner was because it came 10past10pm, besides one was not eatable.

The staff and food were excellent but the Hotel was understaffed because of "Grab 1" patrons filling the Hotel. The Management should not have allowed the "Grab 1 " to sell more places than the number of staff they had could provide the correct service.

visitor centre so welcoming and helpful about weather forecast, sorting out car permits for leaving our vehicles for 4 days while we do the tongariro northern circuit.
beautiful and tidy village, everything was so clean and well sign posted.
cafe in the chateau, beautiful food, welcoming, and kept clean with clear rules for COVID.
skotel motel was just perfect for our group of 12 trampers
doing Tongariro northern circuit was just amazing with perfect weather and all DOC huts were welcoming, comfortable and the views of nature, volcanic landscape, mountains, bushes, scrubs, flowers, rivers, streams, waterfalls, springs, sun, moon, stars in the sky were awe inspiring, precious and irreplaceable.
it was so wonderful to only see few people around - huge difference from 2 years ago where it was absolutely packed on the Tongaririo crossing - 4, 000 people on the trail

Excellent location in Whakapapa village and right on the trail for the Tongariro Northern Circuit.
Has a great alpine chalet vibe with a really cosy bar overlooking the volcano.
Good family room with bunks and nice fresh white linen. Even though the hotel is slightly dated the proper hotel linen makes everything feel clean and fresh. They had a games room and kids area which was great for the kids - they loved it. Food service was great - nice dinner options and a buffet breakfast which was handy as there is nothing else close by.
Spur of the moment one night stay over a long weekend. Staff all very friendly, from the young lady at checkin to the barstaff and waitresses. Was a busynight. Dinner was very nice. Meals were a good size. Gold old fashioned crumble for dessert. 😋Room was very clean, a little dated but cozy and warm. Comfortable bed. Will definitely go back again. They are catering for a variety of ages, solo traveller's to families who are all into some sort of outdoor activities . So not your usual big city hotel. Had a nice feel about it.
We were very lucky to be among the very last guests at this iconic hotel, which is closing on February 5th, apparently forever. The staff were struggling to keep the place going and in the main did their very best despite the small number of guests and staff. We wished we had seen it operating in its former grandeur, but were very glad we had done a booking before they stopped taking them, and that it was before the axe finally fell.
The location couldn't have been better for hiking - the hotel is literally on the trail head for the Tongariro Northern Circuit/ Tama lakes track/ Taranaki falls loop. The bar/restaurant had lovely views from the terrace and a cozy fire place with blankets. We had a backpackers queen room, which was the cheapest room with it's own bathroom we could find in the area. It was very small but had everything we needed.
Place is just beautiful. Even though it is an old building, it was impeccably clean and the staff was just amazing. The walks around the hotel and proximity with the ski field also add lots to the experience.
Restaurant serves nice dishes and drinks in an acceptable price, so no need to go out for anything. if you look for a nice place to relax, this is the place. Highly recommended.
Super chill alpine hotel with stunning views all around, especially from the bar. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The food was tasty, with special mention going to the great chips.
Room was small and cosy and with everything we needed. Will definitely stay here again if we get a chance to come back
Great location if you’re heading to Tongariro crossing. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The food at the hotel restaurant was tasty and the portions pretty big. The room (standard queen) was on the smaller side, which was fine since we were there only for sleeping.
Chateau Tongariro Hotel offers beautiful views of its surrounds. I would say that this is the place to stay at Mt Ruapehu. It seems like a great place for families to spend time visiting the ski fields. It is warm and comfortable and has a rather nice restaurant on site.
The location is directly near Tongariro. Although we couldn’t do the crossing due to bad weather, the staff gave us good advice for alternative tracks close to the hotel. Jacuzzi was great and the shared kitchen well equipped and clean.
The location of the hotel is stunning and close to numerous walks ranging fron 30 minutes to 4 hours. The High Tea was very nice indeed. Lots of parking close to the hotel.
The location is awesome. The whole hotel has a central heating, so most of the places its warm and comfy. Staffs are very friendly. We will definitely will stay here again.
