Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area.
Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area. The Hunderwaisser museum was good too. The walk along the river on a good day and arty house and crafts in shops are delightful. Whangarei city is nice to investigate the many stores and restaurants some up little alley ways. Great coffee and breakfasts there too. It's a lovely city I've visited many times.

People/salespersons are usually pleasant and helpful.

Your ID will probably be checked at least once by police.
Large selection of food places.
Apart from Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei Museum, the alternative Quarry Art Centre and the Waterfalls, check out town has anything else you need or are interested in… a quiet town otherwise!

The place is pretty by the marina with shops and restaurants, but! Due to circumstances missed the lunch/dinner hours for eating out. All (yes all on the waterfront) restaurants only offer bar snacks during other hours. EG fries, squid rings etc. We wanted something more substantial. Many people were walking away when they found that out. This is a tourist spot for pities sake!
We had had a long drive and were starving!
Also no really nice accommodation. Best I found was 3 1/2 star Distinction Hotel which has good bones but was really tired needing a major makeover. Stained carpet, wall paper peeling off. I am a kiwi and embarrassed that this tourist spot has sat on its laurels. I know people struggling with covid etc but wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to make your place more desirable. My view - if you don’t have to stop don’t 😡

Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush.
Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and listening to the birdsong. Supermarkets and eats were close enough.
We didn't have enough time to visit places though we know there are great places to visit.

We only stayed for one night so we managed to get down to the marina and see the cool ball-clock and the Hundertwasser (which is amazing) and have an awesome lunch (so many places to pick from!). Next time we go to Whangarei we will be sure to do the loop walk which sounds very interesting indeed!

We went with the kids to aquatic centre, flip out, action zone and the heritage park. Very good family entertainment and easy to drive from place to place. The motel is very close to supermarkets and various eateries. Good location.
The concept of the Grand is awesome with so much potential original nostalgia. But you check in at the pub!!! Room had broken door handles and grout hanging off the walls, bad repair on the cracked sink(definitely worth saving and not replacing with crappy modern sink). The repairs are horrid, and take away from such a beautiful hotel under the dirt, and bad workmanship. Not thought through at all. The nostalgia of staying in the old Grand was great, and staff tried hard to make it good. Pity such a potential is wasted
This is a lovely house-hotel place. You are sharing this house with other traveling guests, so some socializing would be going on if you stay here for more than one day. The rooms are cozy with comfortable beds. There was a small TV and plug-in electric heater provided. There are a couple of bathrooms to be shared and a homey kitchen. The host was very kind and communicative. The price was very fair as accommodations vary in this northern section of New Zealand.
Wonderful and freshly decoreated rooms, but the overall hotel / hallways and common areas in dire need of refurbishment. Comfy and clean and our room though. Spacious car-park etc. The rooms were also quite spacious and had all you need. Nice location, close to city center and quiet/calm (a nice walk over bridge to Hundertwasser museum). The kids loved the pancake machine for breakfast.
Chelsea House is a beautiful property and it was interesting to hear a little of its history. The hosts were very warm and welcoming and it was good to get their dinner suggestions and a little about the points of interest in the area. Our room was very warm and spacious and the bed was super comfortable. A lovely alternative to the usual hotel/motel accommodation.
Nancy’s home is lovely! She has though of everything to make travelers feel welcome and comfortable. My spacious room had a view of the garden, a terrace, an ensuite bath with even a towel warmer. And her kitchen was fully supplied! My best stay so far in New Zealand…you won’t be sorry!
We went for the 'Superior King' room which looks out on the town basin for our one night stay.
This is the room we would recommend that you go for. Treat yourself to dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant as you won't be sorry you did!! Memorable night's stay all round!
Brilliant for a whangarei stay we used the house as a family that met half way to meet each other so 4 adults 3 kids and a baby. Just the right bedding and hang out space and the spa was lovely to use down at the motel end. You have to book your 30min slot in but it works.
Ralph absolutely saved me as I struggled to find accommodation in Whangārei at the last minute! I had been stitched up by my original hotel and thankfully Ralph was welcoming and helpful. Easy to find location, a comfortable bed and gorgeous view from the rooms.
No breakfast but will next time. A most enjoyable stay and will stay again next time in Whangarei. Very friendly staff and please convey to cleaners of the amazing job they do.
10 out of 10 Pembrooke Motel and thank you 👍👍👍
My second stay at Christina's this time. Superb stay. Comfy bed, very accommodating and friendly host. Always my go to accommodation whilst in Whangarei. 5 star for Christina and Charlie Brown! :) :)
Lovely service.
Motel met all my basic needs under such short notice.
Parking right outside my doorway
Close to the main road
Close to the Whangarei hospital
Clean and tidy
Nice and handy to town, was cheap as chips so wasn't expecting luxury, staff were super lovely, shower was not as clean as it could be but overall all good for the price
We really liked our stay. Very clean, warm and organised. Also convenient location within Whangārei, close walk to Dobbies park, and close to walk to town basin.
