I love the proximity to the beach and town. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming as they have been in previous stays. The room was exceptionally clean if somewhat dated. No luxuries but a definite win on price and value. Highly recommended if you want to be right on the beach and near everything. I never rent a car as anything you need is within walking distance.

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)

This location is crowded with lots of traffic.
This location is crowded with lots of traffic. There’s trash alongside the roads and it’s very noisy at night. You must get up early to find a spot on the beach and the waves can be very rough and unsuitable for swimming just about anywhere. It is also far more expensive than we had remembered compared to our last trip vs the Pacific side.
If you must go to Caribbean side of Costa Rica, stay closer to Punta UVA or Manzanilla away from the crowds.
Where to eat in Puerto Viejo: La Nena, Zaika, Lidia’s Place, Tambie Bros, and Pizzeria Pulcinella.

A great laid back type of caribbean seafront.
A great laid back type of caribbean seafront. Good bars and a hippy vibe.
Some decent supermarkets in town and on the road out to Manzanilla.
The bar in the Puerto Viejo Hotel on Friday night is a must.
We had a great stay at Terrazas del caribe! it’s in a great location - near to the Jaguar park and a short rickshaw ride to the beach! the staff really made our trip great! In particular, Michael and Yusmary on the front desk. They were exceptionally helpful in assisting us with finding taxis and helping us figure out how to get our CR phone number to work! Thank you so much! the pool area was also clean and relaxing. The hotel is surrounded by tall trees and one morning we were lucky enough to spot a sloth!
Eric and Sharon were the nicest hosts I have ever encountered at a hotel in a long time. They were always friendly and asked how our stay was going every time we walked in the door. They were able to recommend places to eat, as well as activities. I love the charm of the hotel, it’s cleanliness, amazing atmosphere and vibe. The modern amenities of the hotel and close proximity to the beach makes this hotel elite! This is the only place i will ever stay at when we visit Puerto Viejo again.
Jody was a wonderful host and very helpful. the breakfast is easily the best breakfast I have ever had in my entire life. we had the suite by the pool and it was extremely clean, cozy and beautiful with a lot of details and even had sunscreen, bug spray and chocolate provided (all local and hand made). the location is perfect. you can walk everywhere or rent a bicycle down the road. I will recommend this place to everyone I know ever coming to Puerto Viejo.
Comfortable bed, great coffee, beautiful garden and shared space to relax in and lovely owners and staff. We were able to rent bikes for $5 a day which I recommend doing - Gandoca Manzanillo park and Punta Uva beach are a very manageable ride away. There is also a mini market and a couple of nice restaurants nearby. A taxi/tuk tuk is needed to get to Puerto Viejo and back and it can be a bit tricky to find one on your own, so ask for contact details.
everything was over expectations. wonderful
room, proper tropical vibe, daily treats with cake and flowers on the bed. amazing breakfast with quality food and variety. great location, just on an amazing clean Caribbean beach with a private space for hotel guests. best thing is definitely staff. professional, kind, ready to assist in the best way. a proper 10 star hotel! extremely recommended
Great location and hosts! Across the street is fantastic French bakery, bike shop to get your local transportation and the sea with a nice swim beach and fancy bar of the adjacent hotel. Excellent Italian restaurant just a few houses away with the best pizza ever to pick up.. And an elegant dining experience with superb food and wine when you dine in! Overall great experience!
This hotel has the best location possible. Steps away from the beach. Staff is super friendly. Special thanks to Ricardo, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Rooms are spacious and food was also very good. You stay in the middle of a forest, 20 steps away from the beach. We even saw a sloth 2 meters away. This place is amazing, decoration was also very beautiful.
It's a great place! Very clean and well located (5 min walk to the "town of Puerto Viejo"). The kitchen is well equipped + while we were there we could use the eggs and vegetable to cook for free which was great (the staff even showed us how to cook a specific meal). The showers are great too. In summary it was one of the best places we stayed at during our trip
Beautifully designed beachfront boutique hotel. We had a very comfortable stay in two different rooms. Fantastic breakfast. Staff are really nice, very professional and create a relaxed environment. The property is surrounded by nature (we saw monkeys, sloths and an agouti) and there are several good restaurants a short cycle ride away (bikes rented nearby).
Everything! Amazing ambiance, the jacuzzi, the activities, air conditioner in the rooms all day( Puerto Viejo was hot at december), all the free activities( pool party at an another close hotel, afro dance class, etc). The hair dressing space was a bonus. Staff were amazing and helpfull, specially Mara. Kitchen full equiped
- Very nice setting in the rainforest with beautiful pathways on the hotel compound
- Teepees/bungalows are designed in a traditional and still somewhat modern way, which all fits well into the surroundings
- Beautiful Chiquita beach is within short walking distance of the hotel
- Delicious restaurants nearby
If we go back to Puerto Viejo, this is our go to hotel. Clean, Comfortable, good location (if you have a car or motorcycle), offers design and attention to details.
We stayed 3 nights and it was the nicest place we stayed in our 10 day trip throughout Costa Rica. Moreover, they have the BEST breakfast ever.
Cosy place nearby the beaches and Puerto Viejo. Hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was good. We spotted little frogs in the garden and a lot of birds. Supermarkets, bike rental and restaurants in walking distance.
Great value for money just opposite a beautiful beach! Close by you can rent a bicycle for 9 USD for a period of 24hrs which I believe is the best way to explore Puerto Viejo! Recommended!
Ideal location near the town of Puerto Viejo. Such a unique building, lots of lovely personal touches. John and Eric are excellent hosts. Really enjoyed the outdoor aspect of the villa.
The breakfast was great. The staff here were all wonderful. The location near the beach was amazing. The hotel is close to everything I needed to do during my trip.
It is a good location at Puerto Viejo. All is close by, like beach, restaurants, shops. The bakery right next to it is also a plus. The staff was really friendly
