The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem. Penguins, seals, steam punk, cheese factory, crayfish and blue cod at Moeraki, historic sites. And good restaurants in Oamaru and the area (Whitestone Diner -- as long as you like cheese, Fat Sally's, Fishwife, Moeraki Tavern, Hampden Fish shop and others).
We go back regularly and the area rarely disappoints. To enjoy fully you need a car.

It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride.
There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore.
The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀
Beautifully situated in the Oamaru countryside with a great view from the door. The hut has a double bed, small table, sink, two ring hob and toaster and is more than sufficient for a few nights stay. The bathroom area has a shower, basin and a bamboo composting toilet which was absolutely fine with no smells at all. The owner provides alpaca food to feed the 3 alpacas and 2 sheep nearby to the hut. Overall our stay was excellent with a friendly, efficient owner, a pleasant hut with a great view. 5 out of 5 for our stay.
This backpackers was 100% the nicest place I’ve stayed in New Zealand.
It was immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and welcoming. The lounge areas were warm, clean and cosy and it genuinely felt like a home away from home. This property is an absolute credit to the owners for the care and attention to detail they put into the place. I cannot recommend this accommodation highly enough. Thank you!
Also loved the way the beds were made and the cute penguin theme ☺️
Fantastic little place with a lot of atmosphere! the room had a lot of space, it was clean and super comfortable. The staff was amazing and welcoming, making us feel at hone, as every request was answered immediately. the internet was slow, but the hotel manager warned us before we even knew that there is a general issue related to the entire area, so it’s not the hotel’s fault. the AC a bit noisy, but it didn’t matter much as this hotel is a gem!
Rosie is a most accommodating Host. Always on hand with advice on what to do or where to go in Oamaru. Rosie will let you know if you have left anything behind, giving you plenty of time to arrange a Pick Up and....Rosie will always say Hello if she sees you out and about in the area ....sometimes months after your Booking - that is excellent Customer Care ! Rosie's place is my Go To Accommodation when I am in Oamaru.
We ended our A2O cycling trail in this beautiful Oamaru Stone Building. Luxury boutique accomodation was a really pleasure to stay here with our group of 8 people. Everyone was blown away with the interior design of each room and the high spec features of kitchen and bathroom facilities. A real credit to its owners. Don't hesitate to book here its exceptional.
The Brydone is a historic hotel whose location is central to most attraction of Oamaru, The room was small but clean and comfortable with a great shower. The restaurant/café was great and comfortable, just right for listening to the jazz and blues performances we had come to see.
Roger our host was very attentive, helpful and pleasant. The view from our room was wonderful. A continental breakfast included was a treat. Reminded us of an English B & B in the old days. Quirky and charmingly old fashioned. Fabulous views over Oamaru.
A simple, clean lovely motel which had great facilities. The room was large and had everything we needed. The hosts were lovely and even gave us homemade muffins as a welcome. A large supermarket was close by and the walk into town took about 20 minutes
Tiny house on the rise with a fantastic view over the port and bay of Oamaru. Also view down to the historic precinct which is within walking distance . might be small, but comfortable with everything one might need.
Great location at end of town, close to Victorian Precinct, Steampunk & walking distance to Little Blue Penguin exhibit. Best value for money in Oamaru. Bed very comfortable, kitchen & bathrooms relatively clean.
The staff was excellent and very helpful and receptive to our needs. They went above and beyond what of hotel staff. The room near and clean and the bathroom had been recently updated.
Breakfast of cereal, juice, and hot tea, all of which I prepared, suited me. Some guests may have expected a hot meal.
Loved the location in rural Oamaru, reminded me of home.
You get value for money at this motel! Great for an overnight stay or a few nights to enjoy Oamaru - clean, cheap & cheerful describes what you get - recommended!
